Elizabeth Earnshaw, LMFT, is a marriage and family therapist in Philadelphia. She is a certified Gottman therapist and director and therapist at A Better Life Therapy. She got her master’s in couples and family therapy from Thomas Jefferson University.

Gottman named these four communication habits after the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse in the Christian Bible. The four horsemen—conquest, war, hunger, and death—signaled the end of times. • This isn’t really tips on surviving, it’s more like tips on trying to fix it so you don’t need to survive it. Let’s assume they are disinterested in communicating and meet your attempts with anger. I think a lot of people already know communication is the way to fix it and have tried that repeatedly before. How do you survive/cope with that? Especially when you have kids and really don’t want to break up your home for their benefit.

  • I think we need to establish if there is Love there or not. Then you know what you’re working with. If there is Love, that’s Good. It doesn’t always mean it will work out, but compassion towards one another can only be helpful. If the love is not there, then at least you can accept that and move on, together or not

  • It’s difficult to make this marriage work when my wife spends all her time shopping. She spends no time with me at all not even 1 hour. Then, after she shops she goes downstairs to her mother and sister and hangs out there for 6 to 7 hours. She leaves me alone with our six children she collects all the income tax and doesn’t give me a dime. The funny thing is that she said she never wanted the children. She taught our first born son to hate me and he expressed his hate even though I did everything for him. The sad thing is that our three daughters see it all but it hurts my oldest daughter the worse because she knows and understand.

  • I stay because i now believe love is not real. I feel deep down, this is the best it will get. There is no need to look for “the one”. He doesnt exist. The only people who truely love me unconditionally is myself, and maybe my mother. I have not met a woman who is in love with their husband. The “in love” women i have met are newly married or their husband (usually their second) is dead. It always seems to boil down to what i can give them, either domestic duties, money, or sex. I just seem to believe love is not real if i am required to met a sex quota. All men seem to have a limit on this issue. It’s not that i cant met this quota or dont enjoy sex, just the fact the requirement exists to be loved, just destories my view of love.
