How To Fit In Your Wedding Dress?

A successful first wedding dress fitting involves following these steps:

1. Do your hair and makeup similar to your wedding day.

2. Bring your wedding accessories and jewelry.

3. Bring your wedding shoes.

4. Wear correct undergarments for the style of your wedding dress.

5. Have a second fitting about a month before your wedding.

6. Photograph each look with your measurements and write them on your alterations worksheet.

7. Measure your bust, natural waist, hip, and overall height/body length for a precise and flattering fit.

8-12 weeks before your first fitting, you will receive an email or text from Kleinfeld that it’s time to schedule your first fitting.

During this fitting, try on your wedding dress and carefully fold the bottom half/train towards the waistline.

Wedding dress alterations are key to achieving the perfect fit. As a bride-to-be, it’s essential to make small tweaks to your gown to make it feel custom-made just for you.

The different types of bustles vary depending on the type of bridal gown and the desired bustle appearance. The average cost of wedding dress alterations is between $100 to $250, but can go up to $500-$1,000 if your dress requires extensive customization. Less expensive dress alterations typically cost as little as $50.

A well-fitted gown should support and shape the bust, accentuate and complement the body’s shape, and be long enough to cover the shoes but not too tight.

To ensure a successful first wedding dress fitting, remember to wash your hair the day before, style it up or down, stop exercising, and eat a healthy diet.

When should you have your first wedding dress fitting?

Two to three months to go. Big changes. Most brides have their first fitting two to three months before the wedding. At this fitting, the seamstress checks the dress from top to bottom to see what needs to be altered. Even though dresses are ordered in a size close to body measurements, most brides will still need to adjust for their figure. It takes several months for the wedding gown to arrive, so the bride’s measurements may have changed. Even a small change in size can affect the fit of a wedding gown because the fabrics don’t stretch much. Bring your undergarments and shoes! Your shoes and how you stand in them affect how the dress falls. The amount of structure and padding will also affect how the dress falls. Many brides are left wondering if any part of their dress won’t be altered by the time the fitting is over. Don’t worry. Your seamstress knows what she’s doing.

Should I wear a bra to wedding dress fitting?

You don’t need a bra for your bridal appointment. Padding on top of the dress’s padding will change how the dress fits. No bra or pasties is best. If you don’t like that, wear a nude, sticky bra with light padding. You don’t need to wear shapewear, but you can if you want. Wear nude. Don’t wear shoes to your bridal appointment. Shoes will make it harder because the dresses won’t be tailored to you. Wear some cute socks!

How tight should a wedding dress feel?

Your wedding dress should fit snugly. You don’t want a dress that slips off or is uncomfortable. Embrace your wedding day. If you don’t want a tight dress, don’t wear one.

Do I have to wear a bra to a wedding dress fitting?

1. Most dresses don’t need a bra. Many wedding dresses have parts that make a bra unnecessary. Also, sewn-in structure is more comfortable. Your straps won’t slip or your underwire dig in because the dress keeps them in place. Designers make sure the dresses don’t show any bra straps. If you’re making a dress with a low neckline or open back, you want the bride to enjoy that detail without worrying about finding a bra that will work with it. Even gowns with a high back may have sheer lace or peekaboo cutouts that don’t play well with bras. You probably won’t need to worry about a bra at your bridal appointment. At The White Dress, our dressing rooms are private, and our TWD-ettes only come in after you try on the dress.

Is it normal not to like your wedding dress?

Don’t believe the myth that you’ll know when you find the perfect wedding dress. Not having a “wow” moment is more common than you think. Even if you feel excited when you find your dream dress, you might not feel the same way a few months later. Some brides wonder if they should have kept shopping. Your buyers remorse could be because you were anxious about making such a big purchase or because you bought your dress before you were engaged. When the wedding day comes, you’ll realize that a dress is just a dress. You’ll be happy to marry your partner in a pair of sweats. The dress that was giving you pause will suddenly feel just right. • Thank you for taking us “backstage” (so to speak). REALLY interesting to see the inner workings of the alterations department! Also, two things for future/current brides. One: Don’t freak out if your dress doesn’t fit perfectly when you go in for your first fitting. That is precisely what fittings are for and the alterations team can and will handle anything you need. Two: this may have been implied in the article, but you need to bring the shoes you’re going to be wearing on your wedding day because you need to know if the dress needs to be longer or shorter. You don’t want to go to your own wedding with your dress too short/long.

  • Holy Moly! I gotta tell you, out of all the wedding related articles I have watched since being engaged this is probably one of the most helpful things I have ever watched. I recently got my dress. Your dresses may not have worked for me (but at least my bridesmaids will be rockin’ them), and it definitely will need to be bustled which worried me because on things I can’t stand about bustles is when it looks huge and like you have a bump or a tail. May be a bad explanation but to me that’s what it’s like. But that whole bustling portion when you talk about the types if bustles or even hem bustles was great! I feel so much more at ease for when my first fitting comes a long so I know what I can ask about.

  • I found a second hand dress for super cheap and love it…but know its currently not my size but i have been losing weight and am super close…i know i will need alterations by the time the wedding is here in about a year…my biggest fear is losing too much weight and having to find a different dress

  • My curious question is, during the alteration process, when they are doing beading, is the dress not ordered out to the original designer and their team to customize the dress again for the bride? Hopefully that made sense. Because then it becomes a kleinfeld customized dress vs coming from the original designer, which is what the bride originally tries on? Right? Wrong? lol confused.
