Thank you for your vulnerability. It’s not an easy thing to share. I don’t know you personally but you seem very genuine and that is very important quality. You’re blessed with a most beautiful wife. I’ve learned that Wisdom doesn’t come from age, but from the heart and from internal growth. I agree that integrity and honesty are important especially in a committed relationship. And i like the way you phrased the part about” getting to the line and then find yourself crossing it” in terms of the lead up to the cheating which makes sense. You play with fire, you get burned and if it’s enough fire, it might leave a scar for the rest of your life. A serial cheater May only learn their lesson when they aren’t beautiful anymore or aren’t surrounded by beauty anymore . However I do believe in second chances for first time offenders, especially if both parties (but especially the offender) are willing to do the hard work and learn to trust and love each other again and never stop growing even beyond their last breath., like you said it’s not going to be easy but if you can make it, you are on your way to a more successful and even stronger marriage than before. Thank you you for sharing your story and your wisdom and insight. 🙏🏼 many blessings to your family
Edit: unmet needs make us do things we never thought we would. As a polyamorous person whose family has been happily stable for 19 years i have seen the ppl in monogamy rarely have the relationship talks and open discussions necessary for full disclosure and honesty that makes everyone safe together.
A few years ago I was very, very atracted to a man I had to see on a weekly bases for work. I found myself thinking about him all the time. Then I decided to make a change so I didn’t have to see him that often and those feelings slowly faded until they disapeared. I value my husband too much to risk my marriage. I wish I hadn’t had those feelings but I’m happy I acted against them
Everything that happens does really happen for a reason- we just get to assign the reason to it. If cheated on- you could say that means you are not worthy of love OR you could say it showed you how to love you! If you cheated you could say it means you’re a horrible person or you could say it was the best thing ever bc it brought you SOO much wisdom to truly love in your marriage, like Jimmy here. It’s not that cheating is right but nothing is black and white everything CAN have a positive impact on us and our relationships.
For me personally, I was with a guy who had been cheated on by other women and I quickly figured out why. The guy was incredibly toxic, controlling, and abusive. If you tried to leave him because the relationship wasn’t working out, he cried even if you had only been with him for a week. Then he spent the rest of the relationship holding it against you for wanting to leave. He weaponized a pitiful image of himself against women with empathy, forcing them to be with a person they didn’t want to out of guilt. Then these women wanting to move on but not being allowed to by this guy who just won’t allow the breakup to happen. Cheat. Except I didn’t cheat like them despite constantly being accused of it by this overly paranoid man child. I left him. He wouldn’t allow it at first until I convinced him that we were just taking some time away from each other. Then once I moved everything out I let him know that it was over and I ghosted him. Had another guy who was with someone trying to cheat on her with me. I wasn’t into that. People aren’t clothes for you to try on and see if you like before tossing out the old pair. People said that his girlfriend was super controlling, but that was just all the more reason for him to break up with her before trying to date someone else. I can’t imagine the amount of craziness that would have been invited into my life had I been his side piece. It’s difficult when you get used to someone and you don’t want to leave them, but you also have needs that aren’t being fulfilled by them.
My mother was beaten and verbally abused for several years by her first husband, but she never cheated on him. She wouldn’t even go for a walk with her future second husband until the divorce was finalized, even though she filed for divorce 6 months before she even met him (at a church-related service project). Cheating is always a choice made one seemingly harmless step at a time until the unthinkable happens (or so I’ve heard – I’ve never even had a boyfriend due to my severe health issues, but I’ve studied this issue a lot because I’m a writer and I need to write healthy realistic relationships between my characters).
Nobody knows what they are capable of until they find themselves in that experience. Sometimes people find themselves in that situation because they aren’t having their basic needs met from their partner and have tried everything they know how to get their needs met by the partner, but he continues to cheat her out of that, and play the victim. Sometimes when we feel like we’ve been “cheated on” we fail to see the ares where we are cheating them. So yes, the choice to cheat is always the cheaters, but the accountability goes both ways.
Agree with most of your “shouldn’ts” but I’d amend one: I think fantasizing is okay IF the person in your fantasy is absolutely unattainable in real life. In other words, your fantasy has to be 100% unrealizable. It can never be about someone you know or could meet in even the most tangential way, because that fantasy has the potential to become a rehearsal for future action.
Thank you. That perspective article was so helpful. My partner is a cheater and we both know it but he refuses to admit it out loud so no healing is possible and a lot of parts of this article are very relatable. At this point I said last solution would be to try couples therapy. I don’t think he understands yet that I’m serious that if I see no real good faith effort – and I promised to try truly myself – I’m out. It’s shitty cause he was my family.
Anyone who cheats doesn’t love their partner. That’s truly what i believe. You dont purposely hurt the person you love. The emotional pain of being betrayed is worse than any physical pain I’ve ever felt. I wouldn’t tolerate physical pain being inflicted by my partner, because its cruel and cruelty shows you don’t care about someone’s happiness, so why would I tolerate someone inflicting emotional pain? Cheating is emotional and psychological abuse through manipulation and lying. Literally, if you don’t like your partner, just leave them.
Nobody could ever convince me that cheating is justifiable in any way. You are a grown adult who made a conscious choice to cheat. Not only are you destroying your relationship but you’re putting your partners health at risk by potentially giving them an STD non consensually. Would never stay with a cheater & I feel bad for anyone that hasn’t had the courage to leave a cheater.
