How To Hem A Beaded Dress?

This tutorial demonstrates how to hem a beaded dress with vertical, horizontal, or individually sewn rows of beads. There are two main methods for hemming a beaded dress: hand sewing and machine sewing. Both methods have their pros and cons.

When hemming a beaded dress, it is essential to consider the delicate nature of the dress and its suitability for dry cleaning. Formal dresses are fuller than plain dresses, making it harder to hem. To alter a beaded dress, follow these steps:

1. Mark the hemline with a pencil and use a needle to sew the hem into a series of folds.

2. Hand-stitch the skirt onto the dancer at the top and sides, not down at the bottom.

3. Cut the excess length off the dress or skirt, reattach the overlay, and hem the dress or skirt.

4. Measure from pins to the hem using a seam gauge and use the average length of pin markers as the pin line won’t necessarily be straight.

5. Hemming a dress is usually straightforward: pin it to the desired length, trim, press, and sew. When altering a beaded dress, reinforce the thread holding the sequin and/or temporarily remove the beads.

In summary, hemming a beaded dress involves marking, trimming, pining, and sewing the hem, with the option to sew some beads back on. Both hand sewing and machine sewing methods have their pros and cons, but the process is more time-consuming and requires careful attention to detail.

  • I usually just sew right on top of beads sequins. But a gown I just did I did hand sew it because I broke too many needles I will use Fabri-tac to secure beads on the excess of the hems. On gowns with deep scallops I will sometimes allow the excess hem to “fill in” the cuts. And then just tack them to edges of the scallops. On sides of gowns I just tack where the beads “pull” then lay the seam open and press with steam covering the beaded fabric with muslin If the trim is part of the gown I “make it a trim” by cutting seamage and taking under Also with these gowns it’s so easy to catch a thread and rattle off a whole row of beads or sequins (I just did this….sigh…) So I cut a piece of beaded fabric from the excess of the hem and matched it to the gown and glued it on tacking at the ends You couldn’t tell unless I told you. And during prom this is a real time saver
