To determine your dress size without measuring, check the sizes of the dresses you already own and consider your body shape. Use online dress size calculators to find your perfect fit by inputting your measurements at the fullest part of the chest, usually about two inches below the armpit. This measurement informs which suit size you’ll wear.
To measure your torso/back length, wrap a measuring tape around your waist and hold it at your navel. Measure just below the armpits for the chest size, finding the seams where the sleeves attach to the shirt. Place a measuring tape across the shirt just below these seams, aligning with the left side seam and then measuring across to the right side seam. Write your measurement down. If your hand measures just over a whole number, verify your size by measuring your hand a different way. Use a ruler or measuring tape to measure across the widest part of your palm and double that number and add 1 inch (25 mm) to find your size.
To measure your bra band size at home, stand upright without a bra on and use measuring tape around your back and under your bust. Place your feet together to avoid creating a measurement that is larger than your hip area.
To get your dress size, measure your bust, waist, and hip sizes using a flexible measuring tape, a pen, or standard objects like printer paper or a dollar bill. Compare your body measurements with those on a size chart, choosing the size that closest to your desired fit. Sizes are not fixed and do not tell you about the shape of your body, the cut of the dress they need, or whether or not you are tall or obese.

Thank you for this! When I was a bridal gown consultant (I miss it. It was fun!), measurements was the most frustrating part of getting the best fit for brides and, mainly, for bridesmaids! I would’ve wanted to send them to this article. Like you said, it’s best to have a professional measure you for important garments like bridal and formal gowns. Trust me. It isn’t worth not going to a professional! Anyway, I find that looking straight tends to help you get the most accurate measurement. Also, when measuring the bust, 2 things: make sure the measuring tape sits flesh with your skin. It’s tempting to pull the tape while looking at the final measurement. pulling the tape slightly too tight is easy to do when pulling the tape across the gap of your chest. Same with the hips measurement. Also, I suggest holding the measuring tape at your funal measurement, then dropping 1 arm at your side (aka, the hand that isn’t holding the tape). This will ensure your posture is right, and you are measuring the way your body sits naturally. Just some thoughts, from someone who measured women, every day for years. 😁
Thank you so much feranda. I am glad to come across your article. Your just mind blowing your explanation was very easy to comprehend. I was really scared to buy clothes from online. Now I can happily measure my body the way you did. And I will surely start my online shopping. Thanks a lot for this wonderful article.
Thanks for the article! The bead on the ribbon is a great idea for those who don’t have a fabric measuring tape handy. I have a question, when purchasing jeans, and the sizes are done in inches instead of the more traditional women’s sizes (6,8,10), in most cases, would you choose the inches for your waist or hip (or somewhere in between)? To be more clear, if my waist is 28, hips are 38… what size demin jeans should I choose when the sizes are listed in inches? ps. just venting, don’t expect you to know the answer to this… but why on earth is women’s sizing soo confusing while men’s sizing just makes sense (like 34×38 tells you so much more than size 6 short, y’know?!)
Hi Fernanda, thanks for a great article. I did not hear you discuss the rise of pants. I am long waisted and require a higher rise in pants. It’s annoying to have to contact the retailer for this info, as many don’t mention the measurements gor pants and the description can be misleading. Also because I have a lot of space between my crotch and belly button and my natural waist, I find that some retailers provide the measurement near my belly button, which is a bit larger than my higher natural waist. Any tips when you have a longer rise?
So many retailers seem to use vanity sizing so this doesn’t work for brands you have never tried before, and even then it varies from one item to another within a brand. According to the Boden chart I am size 10 but size 8 is what fits, in Lands End even size 6 was too large in a shirt dress despite the chart measurements showing that a 10 should fit. In Seasalt I am size 10 as per chart . Most retailers do not provide this amount of detail online but next time I shop I will take a tape measurements and tape measure with me to check items to see if it is worth trying them on.
