Convince parents for intercaste marriage is a complex process that requires open and honest communication, emphasizing compatibility and shared values. Parents may expect their children to marry within their own caste, but if the couple falls in love, they may face concerns about their partner’s lower caste family or their partner’s job. Intercaste marriages are frowned upon by elders and are seen as an offense in Hindu society.
To convince parents for an intercaste marriage, it is essential to have a good start and bring in a trusted ally relative. Address common misconceptions and stereotypes, involve a mediator or counselor, seek support from other family members, be patient and persistent, and share stories of successful intercaste marriages.
When parents don’t agree, it is crucial to talk about the issue with your partner and express your love and commitment to them. Be patient and listen to their perspective, and be truthful about your feelings. If you have any objections, you can file against the marriage within 30 days.
The Centre also offers a scheme to promote inter-caste marriages, offering Rs 2.5 lakh if one partner is a Dalit. To convince both families, calm down, have patience, and think wisely. Ask a sympathetic relative or family friend to back you up, and consider having independent interactions with your partner.
Lastly, seek support from within your community or cultural circle, as hearing from others who have successfully navigated intercaste marriages can help you overcome challenges and make the decision for an intercaste marriage.

What to do when my parents reject my choice of spouse?
If my parents don’t like my spouse, it would be hard. If they don’t agree, I’d talk to them. I’d tell them why I chose my partner and why I think it’s a good match. I would listen to their concerns and show that I value their opinion. However, marriage is a personal decision. I would have to think about my happiness and well-being. If my parents still refused, I would ask other family members, friends, or a counselor for help. If my parents didn’t approve, I wouldn’t marry. As a believer, I honor my parents.
It’s hard when parents don’t approve of your spouse. If I’m in this situation, I’ll talk to my parents without my spouse to find out what they think. If they don’t convince me, I’ll talk about how compatible we are, his values, and qualities. If this doesn’t work, I’ll ask a neutral, knowledgeable third party. It could be a religious leader, counselor, or family elder. If this doesn’t work, I’ll give them time to think. This could take three to six months. I’d tell my in-laws about the situation. If they don’t change their minds after six months, I’ll watch how my spouse and his family react and pray about it. My spouse and his family’s reaction will decide what I do. My parents have always supported me, because they know God is on my side. If my parents refuse my choice, I’ll think about what went wrong. They mean well for me, and God is our source of choice in the family. I told God I was choosing a partner. My mother called and told me a message she had received from God about the issue. I had to change my choice because of a message from God. When I got a new lead, I told her. She was happy because God knew about it.

I got married in 2018. Everything seemed perfect. But things got weird when I realized my husband doesn’t get along with his family. From day two, I felt I had to change my husband’s attitude towards his parents. He loves me and protects me from problems at my in-laws’ house. But before two months, we moved out. I knew I couldn’t go back to his parents. My parents gave me bad things to sleep on, a bad wardrobe, and didn’t arrange our wedding well. They fight over who will pay for Maggi packets. I was told my husband didn’t help with his sister’s wedding, house, or his own. I was asked to pay for the wedding album because my husband didn’t contribute to his own wedding. They’ve been sending me bank payment messages to pay the amount. One day, I asked them: If your son is having so much trouble, why did you marry him? They said they did it for society. The moment I left the house was tense. They threw a lot of tantrums and took the jewelry I bought and kept the jewelry my parents gave me. I didn’t say anything because material things don’t matter to me. I had to take back some jewelry from my parents because they wanted it back. After leaving home, they didn’t ask about our health or problems with the new setup. They just called for money. They’re threatening to come back if we don’t talk to them and make their son come back to his parents. I thought my husband was the monster who was abandoning his parents. When I heard his side, I realized he wasn’t entirely to blame. They never loved or accepted him; they always compared him to others. They thought of him as an investment, but never helped him financially. He doesn’t have good memories of his family. I tried to make him feel their pain. They called me often to abuse me. They cursed me and my parents for taking their son. My husband is an Indian man who took control of my debit card on the first night. He told me what not to wear. He showed love towards me, so I did the same. I’m happy with him. But his parents are always abusing him, so I feel like I’m the one who is the culprit. I wasn’t ready to have kids with my husband, but I did it after four years of marriage. I’m pregnant now, but my husband said I can’t tell his parents. Otherwise, he’ll send me back to my parents. My subconscious is telling me I’m the one at fault every two to three weeks. I feel like my child will leave me like we left his parents. They insulted me, but I still want them to be taken care of in their old age. My husband is detached and doesn’t care about them. Also, his parents call to abuse me or their son. They never ask how we are. Even in the corona time, I was positive. When they knew, they called my husband to make fun of this. Please help. Your mind is racing. Sometimes, it helps to think in different ways. You seem like a nice person. You’ve tried to help your son and his family.

How do I talk to my parents about inter religion marriage?
Be honest. Start with how you feel about the person, not their faith. Then talk about how their religion affects them. Discuss how you and your partner have talked about their beliefs and how you will manage them. Tell them what problems you think you might have and what you plan to do about them. Ask your parents how they feel. Listen. Tell them what you think. Be honest. Love and accept your partner and parents. Your relationships are non-competitive. That’s tough!
