Waist measurement is the narrowest part at the waist, usually just above the navel area, and is the point at which the waist is the smallest. To find your natural waist, measure your body accurately using a measuring tape to measure your chest, waist, and hips. Look up for a dress size chart and measure your waist from side to side directly at the waistline.
In sizing for dresses, three major body parts must be measured – bust, waist, and hips – in inches. To find the correct measurements, measure the bust from side seam to side seam directly under the armhole or sleeve. Measure the sleeve length from the neck to the wrist, and measure along the curve of your arm with your elbow slightly bent.
To measure the chest size, measure just below the armpits and find the seams where the sleeves attach to the shirt. Place a measuring tape across the shirt just below these seams, aligning the end with the left side seam and measuring across to the right side seam.
To measure the inseam, measure between your groin and ankle, and measure the bust by wrapping the measuring tape around your back and under your arms at the fullest part of your bust. Measure the waist by standing up straight and bending to one side, ensuring the crease created is your natural waist.
To measure your body, start by running a tape around the fullest part of your belly, usually around the level of the belly button. The tape should be snug but not squeezing in. Stand in a relaxed, normal position when taking the waist measurement. Measure the bust from side seam to side seam under the armhole or sleeve, waist from side to side directly at the waistline, and hip from 7-9 inches below. To measure waist, lay pants down, face up, on a flat surface, with the waistband buttoned at the front and the fly zipped closed. Measure across the top of the waistband from one side of the pant to the hem. Stand up straight, exhale slowly, and bring the measuring tape from your navel around your body to connect at the front. Measure twice and record the number at the meeting point of the measuring tape.
