How to grieve a broken engagement?

Take your time with your feelings of grief. Friends might say how long their grief lasted after a breakup, but there’s no set time limit. … Don’t avoid your feelings. … Get support from family, friends, or a therapist. Take care of yourself. … Make new memories. Everyone grieves differently, but there are universal steps for moving on. Even if you’ve been with a partner for a long time, a breakup can feel like a big shock to the heart. The emotions after a relationship ends can be sad, angry, or frustrated. Some become depressed or have post-traumatic relationship disorder, while others drink alcohol to cope.

How long does it take to get over a 10 year relationship?

You’ll probably feel better in a year. Every breakup is different, so there’s no set time for feeling sad and hurt. Generally, Juarez divides break-ups into three groups based on her experience. It may take six to 12 months to recover from a big breakup, three to six months from a mid-breakup, and under one to three months from a mini-breakup. Similarly, Dr. Lewandowski says three to six months is a typical time to learn how to move on. It’s important to develop coping strategies. Instead of waiting for time to heal, think of yourself as growing, learning, and healing. Your mindset affects how quickly you heal. Your mindset is the most important factor. If you want to move on, you’ll find it easier to do so. If you keep thinking about your ex, check their social media, or ask mutual friends about them, it will be harder for you to move on. Stay positive by focusing on yourself, getting support from your friends, and not worrying about your ex.

Who gets ring after a broken engagement?

It doesn’t matter who did or said what. If the wedding is cancelled, the ring goes back to the person who gave it. If divorce is no-fault, so should a broken engagement be. Virginia law on engagement rings. In Virginia, the Supreme Court ruled in December 2016 that the engagement ring is a gift that should be returned to the giver. In 2012, Ethan Dockendorf proposed to Julia McGrath with a two-carat ring worth about $26,000. Dockendorf ended the engagement a year later, but McGrath kept the ring. Dockendorf sued McGrath and won. The court ordered McGrath to either return the ring or pay him $26,000. McGrath appealed and said he couldn’t sue for the ring because of Virginia’s “heart balm” law, which blocks legal actions against suits including: breach of promise to marry, alienation of affection, and criminal conversion. McGrath lost again when the Virginia Supreme Court decided that the heart balm statute doesn’t apply to conditional gifts.

Why am I unhappy after getting engaged?

It’s normal to feel overwhelmed, anxious, sad, or confused after getting engaged. Saying “yes” can change your life. This can feel overwhelming. With big changes come lots of different feelings. Many people find the proposal stressful, not the commitment. It’s probably something both parties agreed on, but this doesn’t always take you by surprise. The person who proposes has had time to plan, choose a ring, and adjust to the proposal. The person who is proposed to is often caught off guard. There’s a big difference between talking and doing. It’s normal to feel disappointed and that the moment was anticlimactic. Your expectations are probably higher than reality, but that’s okay. Your friends, family, colleagues, and loved ones are also adjusting to your new identity. The love and attention can be overwhelming, especially if you’re not used to being the center of attention.

How long does it take to recover from a broken engagement?

9. Take time to heal. Don’t rush the healing process. Don’t sign up for Tinder a week after your breakup. Stay away from Tinder altogether. I promised myself I’d take my time, and I felt better sooner than I thought. It might take more than a year to get over the worst pain. Make yourself happy. Don’t rush back out there. Listen to your heart. Heal your heart first and you’ll be amazed at what happens!

10. Forgive. Forgiveness can be hard, especially when the person who hurt you doesn’t apologize. However, it’s often the best way forward. It lets us acknowledge the wound, understand the other person’s perspective, and process our emotions in a healthy way. I’m not an expert, just sharing what’s worked for me. Healing from a breakup takes time. Everyone is different in how they find their way again. As soon as you love yourself again, you will feel better. You will. I’m moving forward in a healthy way. No bitterness, anger, sadness, or shame. I feel hope, love, and strength for a better future. It’s been a great achievement to feel that way again.

How to be happy after a broken engagement?

Healing Steps after a Broken Engagement: Saying goodbye. Hugging my ex-fiancé goodbye was hard. … I told him I was breaking off the engagement. … “Unplanning” the wedding. … The wedding day. … Finding a counselor. Reclaiming special places. … Listen to the truth. … Surrender your plans. One morning, I woke up sad. I wanted to think yesterday was a nightmare. I looked at my ring, not wanting to take it off.

Taking it off meant my fiancé had left me. My best friend Carly brought us snacks and was kind. I thought of what should have been happening that day—touring the new apartment and admiring the bridal bouquets. I needed her that day.

  • I found this because my engagement was broken after my to-be-wife met someone else and walked out the door. Its a new level of emotional destruction. I’m middle aged and have never experienced something this horrifically painful in my life. Right now I’m just listening to various takes on all of this. Of course therapy is very important. After two months I was getting worse in my feelings and it was not getting better at all. Being cored like this, all I want to do is sleep and not be conscious of this. It will get better. But yeah. Thanks for your thoughts and words. I appreciate it.

  • Diana, I have been married for 34 years. I love the strong, no nonsense, and God centered advice you gave in this article to others. It’s so refreshing to hear dating, break up, and martial advice at this point in time. I pray that you and your husband have many beautiful sweet years together walking in God’s love. God bless you.

  • This article is saving my life right now. My fiancé left me three days ago. I’m devastated. He moved into another apartment in our building and I am moving into a one bedroom in the same building. I was completely blindsided. The sadness hits me in waves. I’m good when I’m around people and struggling badly when I’m alone. Mornings are the worst. It’s a daily reminder that this is my new reality. I still hand the indent on my finger from my engagement ring. I catch myself playing with my finger like I did when I used to play with my ring. 13:09 I don’t need to be controlled. This makes so much sense!

  • Thank you for posting this. My engagement ended last week and whenever I get low again I re-read your blog post or listen to this article all over again. Your “yes” to God’s call to share has brought me so much consolation and hope. I cannot wait to see what God does with my life after this pain heals.

  • I am going through this right now with the love of my life. Been in a relationship for 11 years (high school sweet hearts) and engaged for 1 year with no date planned yet as she is still in grad school. My fiancée is leaving me but I’m not holding anything against her. I couldn’t meet her standards/expectations after all this time together and I really thought she was the one for me. I still do. We haven’t had any big arguments during our engagement so I thought I was beginning to grow as a person but I stopped growing at some point and I unfortunately fell short for her. I am hurting so bad as this all just unfolded yesterday and I’m beating myself up because I messed up. I spent so much to build up her trust just for 1 mistake to tear everything down. Thank you so much for all your advice in this article. P.s. if my fiancée/ex-fiancée is reading this. Keep your head held high because you did nothing wrong and I love you unconditionally, no matter what happens between us.

  • Hi Diana, I am so glad I found this article. I had listened and read a few things about breakups which were helpful but hearing you talk about a broken engagement, especially from a relationship that you worked so hard on. And I really appreciated the prayer at the end ❤️ it’s been 2 months and I know why we broke up but at the same time I’m still trying to make sense of it all. I’m living life but I have many many breakdowns. It’s certainly the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through but I’m working on healing and praying for peace and clarity. Also, it’s such a coincidence because just this morning my cousin emailed me saying I should start a blog because I love to write but I told her that no one reads blogs anymore. Seems to me I was wrong 😅 Anyway, thank you for being brave enough to share your story on here ❤️

  • Thank you very much for this comforting article. My fiance jilted me days before the wedding. He called it off very suddenly, causing me a lot of humiliation and total devastation. He also did not accept me for who I am, as you described you had in your experience. I felt like I couldn’t really be myself around him but loved him so much, I did my best to put myself away in a box, which wasn’t healthy. Hearing how happily married you are now and so much better off gives me hope and positivity. Thank you again

  • I know this article isn’t recent but I’m so glad I found it. My fiance called off our engagement and blamed my depression. He gave no indication that anything was wrong over the years until yesterday when he pulled out the rug from under me. He said I was draining and his love should have helped me. I feel so broken and devastated, but your article showed me I’m not alone and I will heal. Thank you❤️

  • I ended my engagement on Tuesday. I feel that God laid this on my heart for almost 2 1/2 years and I finally had the strength to break up with him. It’s a little over a month before the date. We were high school sweethearts and we were together through the entirety of college. It wasn’t mutual but it did end on a good note. I already know this was God’s timing but it’s so hard. I feel the losing appetite thing. It’s hard to eat, sleep, think, and distract myself. Seeking out answers and resources made me find this article and I’m thankful for your story. Everyone I’ve talked to or heard online and in person who’s gone through this has said they never regretted it, especially when they built a new and better life years later. I’m just going to be faithful to the Lord through this and see what He has in store for me.

  • Thank you for this. I recently got engaged and it ended this past Tuesday and it’s been so hard but apart of me is trying my best to heal and continue to try to stay positive. me and my now ex fiancé are young I’m 20 (21 to be) he’s 21 and we were planning to go to GCU together next week in Arizona but now I’m going alone. I been crying but also praying to god while still having hope about it all.

  • Hi, my name is Noemi and sadly as everyone else on this post, my fiancé called off the wedding. I would really appreciate my name added to your prayer list as through this all I have been able to do is seek the Lord and ask for prayer from Church, family and friends! This all happened just over a month ago and I was really struggling even though counselling had helped, I just needed something and God sent me this article ❤️ Thank you for your beautiful words and sharing your own experience! As a pastors daughter, I felt everyone’s eyes have been on me, especially since my ex goes to my church! Sadly he has turned from his faith so I ask for prayer for him, he hurt me but I also know he is hurting spiritually! I know God has intervened and has a plan for my life… but when your in the middle of the storm all you see is clouds and waves crashing down! How amazing to know our Lord can Calm the turbulent winds and seas with just his words! I am glad the Lord blessed you with an amazing husband and a fulfilling job! I hope someday, I can post on here again to say I too have found the man God wants for me and that with time, my wounds have healed. God bless you so so much and again THANK YOU 🙏 I have rewatched this article a few days in a row and know when I am low I can come back here and be encouraged and blessed by your kind words 💕 God bless, sending you a hug as a sister in Christ from Northern Ireland ❤️

  • Thanks for the kind words from a guys perspective, I feel all alone everyday. I felt the blessing of seeing the veneers after the break up ….but holding the ring I gave her was like getting stabbed by god/the universe all at once and I began to believe that I deserved this. I’m finally realizing how toxic/ shameful it was and also telling people you love the wedding is off is the icing on the depression cake. But it’s been 5 months since and I’m kinda feeling ok. I literally focus on the little wins. I used to love gaming but now I’m so depressed that I don’t find joy in it and that scares me because that’s how I would usually cope. Idk. I feel like I’m happy and depressed at the same exact time and it’s exhausting. Sorry for typing so much but yeah Thanks for the vid

  • my fiance of 3 years decided to break things off because peopl give up so quickly now days. I honestly was starting to be unhappy and out of nowhere she just changed up. It hurts because we just got our very own place together now shes moving out because it was either her or me she decided to give me the ultamatium of choosing her or my friends i accepted with the condition of her doing the same for me and she ignored that and confessed she rather just be single. We used to be so happy i am not perfect and neither is she but when people hit a bumpy road there so quick to jump out the vehicle instead of sticking it through its suppose to be through thick and thin now i have to reset but i have faith and hope and now i will heal and better myself its ok to grueve but get back up!

  • I am blessed to come across your article. Please pray for me too… i am having a hard time currently i am feeling like this is the end of my life.. i am in deep Pain.. My boyfriend who i had a plan to get marry told me that he had sex with other women few days ago and the reason was because i always suspect him..with no reason . Now He is telling me to break up with him but i am not able to do that.. i dont know the reason why. I am totally broken and helpless..i live alone and everyday everynight i can’t stop thinking about the fact that he cheated on me.I can’t even eat and Sleep..its affecting me a lot ..

  • I needed this badly, thankyou so much. My engagement ended this Wednesday. All the love and emotions that was poured by me for that person whom I got engaged with for over an year now, was all put to an end with no emotions, over text. He didn’t even dare to call me and call it off, rather when I asked him about the situation just texted me. He was not having the courage to pick my calls either. Just like that he ended a relationship of 3 years, now when I am not with him and looking at the relationship from a 3rd person’s perspective, I am able to contemplate that initially he pretended to be somebody else and later he was completely a different person, honestly he was not for me. Going through the quotes in your blog, really giving me strength.

  • He left me three weeks before the wedding, when everything was ready! The night I handed the invitations to my friends, he came and said to me our relationship felt too hard and he believed it is not the right feeling and that we should postpone the wedding and see if we can make it work. We indeed have been fighting a lot and I started having doubts but I believed it was pre wedding stress. He was from the begging reluctant to progress our relationship in every stage so I always felt pushing him forward. I was devastated, even though he said not to break up at that point and that we should have gone to the honey moon trip anyway and see how it goes. I went to my parents to get some space and think because I was so hurt I couldn’t be with him and after one week he said he decided to break up even though I begged him not to break up at that point. He said we never were meant to be and that we should try with new people. All that with having my wedding dress in the closet… he then went to our honeymoon alone and posting pictures online so everyone could see! I did everything you said in this article, blaming myself, not eating etc. Now after three months I can say I feel stronger already, having blocked them and realising how it wasn’t my fault. I was into therapy and still am, always working on myself. He on the other side was always avoidant and didn’t find he had any issues to work on. This whole mess, proved to me how strong I really am and that I should have heard my gut before when I was feeling insecure with him from the start.

  • I think I may need to end my engagement. I’ve had doubts for the past few months. The wedding isn’t until 2022; we’ve been together for almost two years and engaged for 6 months. I feel trapped, but I have an anxiety disorder, so my feelings can’t be trusted. I don’t miss him when he’s gone, but I don’t miss anyone when they’re gone. We can’t communicate when there’s any kind of difference of opinion anymore; we used to be good at that (or so I thought). I wanted him to propose and convinced him to do so earlier than he planned. I don’t want to leave him, but something doesn’t feel right

  • This past week my fiance decided he no longer wanted to continue the engagement or be with me. It came as a shock to me. We had arguments and bad times and good times but I never thought he would leave me. We were on and off and he would constantly leave me because of “my behavior” being “argumentive” “not listening to him”. He constantly tried to control every aspect of my life. It all went down hill when I started fighting for my life and independence back. We have known each other and we’re best friends for 10 years. Together 2 years and engaged 1. I always thought he was the one and idk how to be without him. He wants to still be in my life and friends. I can’t but I also don’t want to lost my best friend.

  • Thank you so much for this article. My fiance broke our engagement 8 months ago and we also ended our 8 year relationship. I’m not sure if this was directed towards females from a female perspective, but as a man, your words and advice have helped me just the same. Onward, I go. I hope all is well with you.

  • thank you for this article… my fiancé broke up with me this past tuesday. we were supposed to get married next month. last week he told me he wanted space from everyone but me and then the next day he told my dad he wanted to marry me but needed to think about it.. we had 6 days of space – the worst. he then called me and broke up with me over the phone, not even in ten minutes.. didn’t let me speak my mind & hung up and blocked me right away.. as if the year plus we have been with each other didn’t mean anything. I’m broken and hurt but i know i deserve better .. he was so disrespectful and i don’t deserve that.

  • 5 minutes in, i know this is too late but i wanna say sorry for what that man said to you. I know i know exactly how you feel. To have someone promised their whole life to you and suddenly ‘unchoose’ you. Thats also what my ex told me, after 9 years of being together, she said i no longer want to do life with you. It broke my heart to million pieces. I swear only God knows how i felt when she told me i wasnt enough anymore. I dont blame her but its the betrayal to have someone stuck by you for so long and to believe that nothing could ever separate us, turns out falling out of love is real, she fell out of love with me. It happened 4 months ago, now im at the point where i couldnt see my future being in relationship anymore, i just wanna be myself and love myself because only i can love myself unconditionally and searching for a stranger who would do that is a waste of time. I hope you are living your best life now, after this article, i will go and watch your latest update article if you have one. Thankk you for making this article Diana.

  • How.. pardon me, I’m writing this at 3am while crying my eyes out.. I broke it off because I had a panic attack – a full fledged fight or flight fear that it wasn’t quite right for me, that I didn’t wanna feel like I wasn’t good enough for him or even his family anymore.. he’d often hint that my behaviours/statements/what I believe isn’t what he wants in life and that he’d leave if I kept it up.. that would be a recurrent thing for the 6 years we were together. It was draining knowing everytime we’d be hanging out, I’d eventually fight with him and feel alone.. at least once for twice a week. Idk 😓 what a rant.. I just want to know the how of moving on and going through it all again. HOW. 😔

  • I cant take this anymore. We just closed on a house together 3 weeks ago. The day before breaking off the engagement she was talking to literally everyone about how in love she was with me and how much she loved the house and wanted to have children. The next day she did not feel the same. I thought maybe i was controlling, but it seems like she just never wanted to be around me anymore. I was desperately trying to tell her that my needs weren’t being met. We weren’t having sex anymore and she didnt want to be touched. Maybe this is for the best, but i was so resentful towards her towards the end.

  • @Diana, I’m unable to heal from this pain because I was the main reason behind the broke up of my engagement.\r I was soo judgemental and always the complaining person on small matters.\r One day she said that her love is over for me and want to break the engagement.\r After that I did whatever it takes to change her decision, also made soo many promises that I will never break her heart again.\r But, she didn’t change her mind and broke the engagement. Now, this is my biggest regret of my entire life, I’m unable to move on, I really really loved her.\r I was just over obsessed with the relationship. Can you please help me to tell how to heal from this?

  • I had to end things with my fiancé because I was holding a lot of things that worried me from my parents and I lied to them about him because I wanted them to judge him by who he is currently but then the things from his past threatened our future and he wasn’t reassuring. He was my first boyfriend, first kiss, first love. But I prayed and I knew I couldn’t go on like this. It’s almost 2 months later and I’m not sure if it’s him I’m missing or just the hopes and dreams I had pictured with him. I’m talking to God all day too. Sometimes i pray he’ll come back to me a better man because for a long time I thought he was the husband I prayed to God for years for. But I just want to be an instrument of God’s will. I don’t like how I ended things though, I didn’t say exactly what I wanted to say but when he asked for his ring back without missing a beat and then when I told him it wasn’t too late to find someone else (bc he said if we didn’t work out he wouldn’t try again) and he said yeah it’s not too late, i feel it doesn’t even matter. I never wanted to hurt him, I’d rather I got hurt than see him hurt, but his words and actions to me made me realize I’m making sacrifices that he doesn’t really appreciate and maybe I’m asking too much of him. I guess we hurt each other at the end of the day.

  • What to do when your parent is not ok with it and start to talk what would other people say about It and then when other people say something they told me all this bad stuff and caused me so much stress now they are gonna control me more and more they don’t let me to have a boyfriend for 5 years and want from me to hide for everyone any advice?

  • Im desperately seeking comfort. My fiancé who I’ve been with for 9 years says he is no longer in love with me. We canceled our wedding in April due to covid and recently rescheduled for April 2021 and told me a couple weeks ago he was having doubts and felt confused. Last night he finally said the words I love you but I’m not in love with you. We just bought a house 3 months ago. I have turned this house into a home and now I have leave my home because it’s technically his house. Idk how to live without him. Idk how I’m going to pick the pieces up and move forward. I love him so much.
