How To Put A Zipper In A Dress?

Sewing a zipper into a dress requires a slightly different process than sewing a zipper into jeans or a handbag. First, choose the right type of zipper and adjust the length as needed. Then, prepare the opening on the dress where you want the zipper to go. Sew the zipper into the opening and hem the top of the dress to complete the project.

There are two different methods to sew a zipper: centered zipper, lapped zipper, and sewing zippers on skirt waistbands or pants. Lapped zippers are easier to insert and look better than centered zippers.

To sew a zipper to a dress, first pin one side of the zipper face-down to the edge of a fabric piece. Lay the piece down flat so the good side is facing up. Then, use pliers to carefully unbend the U shape on the free side of the slider and unbend the side of the slider that is still attached to the teeth.

Sew the zipper to the other side of the pattern piece, making sure the zipper coils are rolled out and lying flat. Position the zipper teeth under the proper groove in the foot and stitch in place until the foot reaches the zipper stop. Backstitch to lock and remove.

To press open seams, insert the zipper into the dress opening and position the zipper along the opening so that the zipper teeth are just peeking through the opening.

Sewing a zipper into a dress is different from sewing a zipper into jeans or a handbag. First, choose the right zipper and adjust the length. Then, prepare the opening on the dress for the zipper. Sew the zipper into the opening and hem the top of the dress. Measure the area where you want the opening on your dress to be. Think about how far down you want the opening to go. If the dress is form-fitting, use a longer zipper to reduce stress on the fabric. Zippers range from 7 to 22 inches. Choose a zipper that goes from the top of the dress to just below the hips. This will be about 16 to 20 inches (41 to 51 cm) long.

Do tailors add zippers?

Add a zipper. That dress you avoid because it’s hard to get into? Your tailor can add a zipper. Problem solved. Ask for an exposed zipper for an edgy look. Or, if you don’t want to change the look, use a hidden side zipper. This alteration works best on pieces that are also being taken in. Your tailor can also repair a broken zipper, so you can bring that old skirt back out of retirement.

Remove pleats. You might still have a favorite pair of pants from a few years ago with pleats. Or maybe you just bought them, but the pleats aren’t flattering. Ask a tailor to take them out or reconstruct them to create a sleeker look, then adjust the front of the pants to lay more smoothly. Altering clothes can be expensive. A simple hem is usually the least expensive alteration, but taking in or letting out a garment can be more costly. Tailors and seamstresses know what they’re doing. They take time to make sure your clothes fit perfectly.

  • This was a really happy and bright explained tutorial 🙂 I don’t hate zippers, but with my previous job I had to sew most of the time with slight (?) stretchy fabric, while the zipper didn’t had stretch. The fabric ended up being straight, but the zipper didn’t. I hated those working chores so much. So for myself I am only going to use non-stretch fabrics with zippers or a zipper-less option. I can not wait to get creative 🙂

  • Hey everyone! Sorry I forgot to mention the kind of zipper I used in this tutorial, but to clear up some confusion: Yes you can sew over the zipper if its those light weight zippers with plastic teeth. No, you CAN’T sew over the zippers with metal teeth 🙂 If you want to use a zipper with metal teeth, make sure its the exact length you need it to be so you won’t have to make any adjustments to it 😀 Hope this makes sense! +novacane +xnightdreamer
