We release tables at about 80% of our weddings here in PA. Your advice is 100% spot on. We ask the couple for important table numbers ahead of time to avoid problems, but if they don’t then we always search for the parents and wedding party first. We make it fun and talk to everybody as we are walking around.
Probably about 80% of the time, I am asked to dismiss tables for dinner. Don’t mind doing it, in fact I have a little fun with it and get to know some of the guest and I also sometimes ask them if they have song requests during dancing. So with my couples song request and the request from the guest, while dismissing tables, I should have no problem keeping that dance floor full. Sometimes I’m asked to do trivia about the wedding couple while dismissing or sing for your supper. I just try to make it fun for everyone, including myself. Great topic Nick!
This is coming from a Cleveland DJ, but I’m just wondering how you personally announce dinner service when it’s a buffet and you’re dismissing tables. Do you get on the mic and tell people that you’ll be walking around to dismiss them? Do you dismiss bridal party table and parents over the mic since they’re first and then make your way around the room?
That lady was out of line in my opinion. If she was a good host she would want her guest to eat first and be a leader. Or how about make the table numbers in the order you want to be dismissed? I do it on the mic and hate it. I never can figure out the best way to do it without sounded cheesy or like Im giving orders. I have done it personally a couple times recently. A good idea. I think you definitely need to make some type of announcement or everyone will just go up there. When I announce them over the mic, there’s always some that don’t listen and just go up there.
