The myth that normal and attractive people don’t wait to have sex or that those who are abstinent are asexual or have lower sexuality is a misconception. Adolescence is marked by the emergence of human sexuality, sexual identity, and the initiation of intimate relations. Abstinence from sex is a spiritual understanding of sex and spiritual conviction plays a big role in helping one practically abstain. Many high schools and religious programs in the United States teach abstinence-only sex education, advocating for abstaining from sex until marriage.
Abstinence is not only theoretically effective but also has practical benefits. It prevents abortions, unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections, and teenage pregnancies. However, few Americans remain abstinent until marriage, many do not or cannot marry, and most initiate sexual intercourse and other sexual behaviors as adolescents.
The promotion of abstinence-only-until-marriage (AOUM) policies by the U.S. government has undermined sexuality education in the United States and in U.S. foreign aid programs. There are other benefits of abstinence, such as waiting until they feel ready for a sexual relationship, finding the right partner, enjoying their partner’s company without dealing with a sexual relationship, and focusing on school, job, or hobbies.
Setting boundaries and asking a good friend or mentor to keep you accountable are essential steps to stay celibate until marriage. Abstinence is more than not having sex before marriage; it can enhance the quality of your sex life, refuting the idea that having sex with partners prior to marriage will better.

Wow! Such a fresh perspective! 🔥 Can you do a article on idolatry of marriage (or idolatry in general)? I’m single and the Holy Spirit just brought to my attention how my focus of going to church and serving has shifted from being about Him to “meeting guys”. I would like to hear you guys’ perspective as I feel this is really common even among my group of friends in church.
Great article! Hey Pastor Mike, is it possible that you make a article for us guys or maybe even the ladies as well with you, PC, pastor Chris, and Pastor Solo I’m guarding your eyes. I’m 23 and truly desiring to be an awesome man, boyfriend/future husband, and Man of God. It’s so tough in the world we live in. I don’t feel like I’m lusting after any women, but i don’t want to look at all. I’m pretty protective as a man and I work in customer service so I naturally observe people wherever I go. Please help because although I know there’s no condemnation, I feel like I’m constantly being too hard on myself even though I know my intentions and God knows my heart. I just don’t want to look at all and don’t even know if that’s possible or how married men of God do it. Thanks for any help you can give! Be blessed! 🙏🏾💯
Grateful for this. Your message on overcoming the broken assumption that “God is holding out on us” is powerful/timely! So great to come across this article – Michael and I were in the same JRF cohort back in the day. Wishing you and your family continued blessings, and thank you for sharing your perspectives.
