US PASSPORT RENEWAL PROCESS (RENEW YOUR US PASSPORT BY MAIL) // Learn how to renew a US passport by mail in …
Hello passport people, just a quick update about my passport renewal status. I applied/sent in application Expedited by mail March 21. US Department website showed my application “in process” status March 24 and money order was cashed. Two weeks after April 6 status showed passport “mailed”. I received my passport in mail today April 8. In total mine took literally 10 working days (not counting weekends) or 2- weeks. So there is hope out there to get passport fast. Good luck everyone!
Good article. I paid for ‘expedited’ service of my Renewal in Jan 2024. I got my new passport in less than 2 weeks. Also, I just used my Debit card at the Post office to pay fees. (A credit card will not work, since I guess I bought a money order.) Lady at the small town post office in TN was so friendly & professional that she did most of the work. So I don’t remember all of the details. Just an FYI to anyone who might be wondering…..
I was checking the articles about passport renewal and I found you and i want you know that your article is really good. Easy way you talk, fast and clear the form you have in the screen and we can see it clearly step by step and all the information really complete to do it by ourself. thank you. love it.
Thank you so much! This was incredibly helpful. It’s my first time renewing my passport and for the most part everything was straightforward, but I was a little confused about the payment and shipping methods, but you clarified that for me in your article! So thank you so much! I was also a little confused as to what type of envelope to use, which you also helped with, so thanks again. I was surprised as to how much cheaper it was in your article lol. Inflation at its finest lol 😓
Hi. This article has been a great help. I live in the US.The price has gone up for the passport it is now $130. I’m having my passport expedited and the price stayed the same $60. I’m also getting the one to two day delivery and that is $19.53. a total of $209.53 to renew and expedite my password. now there is an automatic calculator that adds everything up for you you don’t have to go over to the calculator like before. Thanks for your article it has been a great help for me ❤️
I was looking everywhere online yesterday for renewing my passport and when I figured it out I found your article. I also found if you go to the US Department of State website, they will fill in everything for you when you enter the information. That was helpful for me. I didn’t know that you are not supposed to bend your application, that I don’t think was in the instructions so thank you very much for that.
Actually the passport card is good for domestic air travel, which I prefer to use instead of driver’s license. Had an unfortunate incident where my DL almost got left behind on a stop over and had to pick up a rental car at my destination. That would have been impossible without DL. I no longer use my DL it keeping it safe in my wallet. The card as you said is good for travel between Canada & Mexico and also for the Caribbean and Bermuda when traveling by land or sea.
Hello, thank you for your article and information. We have a trip scheduled Nov 4-16 and will be in Italy, France, & Spain. My wife’s exipry is March 3, 2024. This is the dillema we are faced with. 6 month recommended post depature validity and 3 month requirement. Too many interpretive understandings create risk and uncertainty. Expedited processing says 7-9 weeks, a call to the state dept suggested that we submit expedited renewal, and if not received within 2 weeks of travel, schedule appt in person to deliver renewed document.
This is a good article, however I want to give you a little correction for the passport card. It can be used for all domestic flights because it is Real ID compliant. So when that becomes instituted and people don’t have a state ID that’s real ID they can still fly within the United States of America. For land and sea it’s still just Mexico, Canada and parts of the Caribbean.
Thank you for this article. I can understand the website but this article was very helpful. I’m not sure if you can advise on this but I’m traveling to England in 6 weeks. Well that’s the plan but I just realized my passport expires next week! The processing times are longer right now. Do you think I have much chance in receiving my renewal on time if I overnight it to them and choose the 1-2 day return?
Great article Maneesha, thanks for the content. I do have a question about where to send my renewal. My permanent address is in Wisconsin and my temporary mailing address for winter is in Florida. Would you recommend that I send it to the Florida location as I will be there when the new passport is sent? Appreciate your help with this.
Thanks for the information and article. Very clear and communicated well. I would like to renew my passport via mail and meet the criteria required on the website. I would actually like to get a passport card as well but it would be the first time I get it. Since I meet the criteria to renew my passport online can I take that opportunity to request a new (first time) passport card or would I have to schedule a in person appointment to get the card. I think I would be ok, but wanted to ask if you had any experience on that. Thank you.
Hello! Great info! Can you clarify..for #10 on the renewal application am I supposed to enter my name with last name first, as it is on my current passport, or does it matter if I just spell out my full name in the order of first, middle, last? Does it matter in which order I write my name as long as it’s the same name on my current passport?
Thank you for the great article, very helpful. I have a question on what to put where it asks what names have you ever used. Does it want names used on passports or in general. I have only used the name I have now and have never used any other name when applying for a passport. Never used maiden name or name on divorce. Thank you for your help.
THANK YOU A MILLION !! This article was very helpful. In preparing for a trip April 3rd, we just realized our daughters passport expired in June 2021. I suppose we need to apply for “renewal” and pay the expedited fees so we PRAYING can get it within a month. DO you think this is possible ? I will get paperwork printed off for her, photo taken and everything done. Did I mention she is 33 years old ????? This just reminds us all to CHECK our dates !!!!!
Hello Maneesha, thank you for the very helpful article! I do have a question about the name change documentation. My maiden name is on my expired passport. I understand that the required document to include is a marriage license however, my marriage license only includes my maiden name. Maybe I’m missing something but how does that prove the name change? I don’t see any other documents listed as required. I’m a bit confused. I hope you’re able to help clear this up for me. Thanks.
My wife and I both applied for renewal at the same time, in the same envelope. We got our pictures done at the same Post office at the same time. They sent me a letter and email saying my photo didn’t have enough white space. My wife received hers back already. I have sent them and still awaiting 3 weeks later. Also, we paid for expedited, so i have been waiting 7 weeks now total
Hi! Thanks for the straightforward and informative article. I do need clarification on the notarized document. I recently got married and changed my last name. I will be renewing as well changing my last name on my passport. What document do I need notarized? Do I photocopy my marriage certificate and write a letter of explanation? I’m not sure. So sorry can you please help clarify.
Very Helpful and easy to understand.. My question is my wife recently was naturalized, and changed her name to my name .. however .. we have not yet received a new check book from the bank for our joint account showing her new name .. will a check with my name and her old name be acceptable to the USDept of State .. she does have her new ID and Naturalization documents showing her new name .. look fwd to receiving your advice
Thank you so much for taking the time to break down this step by step process. I am a little nervouse about having to send in my current passport for renewal. I have 8 months until my passport expires, but need to have it on hand in the meantime of renewal for current travels. Do you know how this works in this case?
Thank you so much for this article. I have a question. My passport expires in April 2024. I know it seems a long time, but I intend to spend an extended time abroad and wouldn’t like to have to go to their embassy and all that when I need to renew. Is there a problem to have a passport renewed much before six months left? Thank you!
Maneesha, thank you for your informative articles! I do have a question. I am traveling in 4 weeks. I just discovered my passport is expired! I believe the quickest way to renew is in person, but I cannot schedule an appointment with passport agency until my travel is within 2 weeks. Stressing out. Do you have any advice, and will I need to submit form DS82 or DS11? No changes to my passport information. Thank you for any info.
Hi, nice article..so I have a cuestión…I’m renewing my u.s passport from Spain…I already filled out the form and all…the only thing I’m concerned about is the fee payment 😅…I tried to make a check with the requirements they ask for…but here in Spain they can not print out my name in front of the check…so I don’t know what to do…
You are amazing I am an American citizen in the last part of my long stay visa application for France (it’s for a school I will be attending), the visa form I am filling out says I will need a passport three months longer than my desired stay so I am currently freaking out a bit about the time it will take to process. I could drive to DC or somewhere like that no problem, but I really want to be able to have this done asap so that I can finish my french visa (I leave for school in a month). Any tips on getting an appointment/getting a visa by hand delivery yourself? Thank you so much! Amazing/perfect tutorial. Foreal.
Contrast to the article, you can renew earlier than 8 months if you choose to (9 months up to a year) and passport card can be used to fly within US, just not internationally. I am getting a passport card for the first time since I don’t have Real ID card yet (Real ID deadline was pushed to May of 2023, so not urgent at this time but wanted to have it just in case).
My passport came in under 1 month, still waiting on passport card. I paid for expedited service and mailed in old passport (had 1 month left till expiration) with the form all via snail mail USPS. The office in Philadelphia received it per USPS tracking over weekend At end of March on 24th, New passport came in Saturday April 23 2023. So about 5 weeks Expedited and paid with Money orders.
Currently in the process of renewing; it’s been “In Process” at the State Department since Aug 8 checks calendar it’s now Oct 21 and still “In Process.” The web site says they’re up to 14 weeks for regular service and 10 weeks for expedited. I called last week and upgraded to expedited, but still no movement. I even called my state representative to see if his office can help. I have an international business trip coming up late November and can’t apply for Global Entry until I get my new passport number. So frustrating!
Hi Maneesha Mukhi, yesterday I were talking to my friend about travel oversea and found out that my passport will expire in little more than 7 months and I am planning to renew it in person on this coming Monday and I saw your article, what’s an coincident. I have watched your article entirely and found out that if I mark expedite and pay expedite fee on the application it will be done in a few days not weeks, is that correct
Hi, Though I’m not traveling anytime soon but my passport already expired and I just want to renew when I still can. So I’m wondering what you meant by expedite the application at 8:14. Will that be the $60 “processing fee”? Also, when putting everything together such as the application, for the application form, is it okay to staple all 6 pages together? I only know that I can staple the photo to the application but for the application form, I fill it online and print it so I’m wondering if I can staple them or do I just paper clip them?
I have a current visa in my old passport that I will need to use to get in the country along with my new passport… I remember from the last time I got my passport renewed they punched a hole in the old passport is there any way I can get them not to do this? I don’t want my visa to be rendered invalid…
Only one tricky and confusing thing is in the form DS-82: Stop here you need print your application in 2 separate pages, what is that 🤔?? By the way I love your English abd ability to speak ❤ thanks, “Shokaria”! Oh one more thing do we really need to staple one of the 2 Fotos to the application, or we can just send it like that?
Thank you for this information. Unfortunately, it’s been nine weeks and we still don’t have our renewed passports. Check was cashed May 25, six weeks ago. Very disappointing given the site stated 4 to 6 weeks expected processing time, and we must travel soon. I visited the site tonight, and it states 8 to 11 weeks.
Thank you, Maneesha, for this information! I need your advice. My son is in Vietnam with a current passport. He has had to leave the country (and then return) every month for over a year. (He now can stay for three months w/o leaving.) The pages in his passport are almost filled up, but he intends to stay longer. Is his only option to visit a U.S. Embassy? Thanks for your help!
Printed applications are also available at the post office. Be sure to pick up 2 because the instructions state, ” If you make an error, complete a new form. Do not correct.” (This article is incomplete without the following explanation of the following instructions: “STOP! PLEASE BE SURE TO: 2. Print form on two separate pages 2. Sign and date on page one 3. Submit both pages (see instructions page 1) My question is: why am I having to print something that’s already printed out? Why is the application a have 3 connected pages and 6 sides, yet the numbers at the bottom of each conflict with each other? Some won’t understand this, but it would be helpful with a quick clarification in this article. This is just constructive criticism. 03/06/2023
Nice article, Maneesha! Thank you. This is two years old and standard passport now costs $130. Time for re-do article! Also, on step one of the application they ask “dates of expected travel” and no need to fill in. HOWEVER, once you get the pdf version, it will state that if you do not anticipate travel, you must enter “None.” This caused me to have to completely start over a new application. Very frustrating. It would also be helpful to know how to just send the passport by ordinary or certified post office mail. NIce job, and look forward to the update!
Update on August 2nd 2021. Passport has been approved. UPDATE: Passort office received my application on July 19th 2021. Estimated day to receive my passport is October 19th 2021. Mailed my renewal application on June 21st 2021 via priority mail. Received by the Philadelphia office on June 23rd 2021. Not looking to receive my passport until November at the latest. Did not expedite my application because I don’t need it faster. Will post status update once I receive my renewal passport.
I’m preparing early for my renewal. On my current passport my height is 5’5. I’ve actually shrunk an inch since then.. all the women in my family get shorter as they get older. If I write my height in the renewal as 5’4, will that be an issue since it’s not the same as the original passport? Silly question but I wanted to make sure before I fill out anything.
Just have a quick question for you. While I send out the application for passport renewal by using register mail vs USPS, then any way how do I trace the passport renewal process, once it did how do I get the return track number? please advice. I am just pretty much concerned make sure I can receive a renewal passport in time. Thanks
Thanks Very helpful. One question. On page 1 of the application line 9, “List all other names you have used”. In this case it would be my wife. Her last passport has the same name as the new one we are appling for. Is this only if you have applied for a passport in another last name or is this her maiden or preveus married name? thanks
I have a question. Now with the pandemic issues. Renew a passport is getting harder. My son is planning to travel July 2 and his passport expired last month. I’m trying to call the passport office to help me with the fast way of getting a new passport but help doesn’t see easy. I’ll appreciate any suggesting Thanks
Hi, I have a question. I currently am In colombia, and my passport had some blue ink on it. Iam trying to renew it because i do t think they would let me in with that passport. What do I need to renew the psssport on Bogota in person besides the walk in date? Do I need to fill out soemthing else? I would appreciate the help.
Hi there, great article. I do have a question. I had gotten new passport pictures taken at a cvs in my location area and it’s put in an envelope. Do I staple the picture onto the application or can I have some from the post office staple it for me? Aso, when you said you can send check or money order. Can I send personal check or bank check?
Thank you Maneesha for this informational article! I’m trying to help my sister figure out how to renew her passport since it expired about a week ago. She wants to travel to Italy sometime this June, which is very soon. So would you happen to know if she would still be able to go to Italy, even though her passport expired recently? Thank you again for your help!
We’ve got a problem. We are scheduled to travel abroad every couple of months beginning in November. My wife’s passport expires next September 2022. The State Dept. says “expedited” renewals are now taking 12 weeks and we do not have 12 weeks between any of our trips. Is it really taking that long? What should we do? We are concerned because we have a trip planned to Italy in May and there will be less than six months left on her passport by then.
Where it states “Can I use this form?” “My U.S passport has not been limited to the normal ten-year validity due to passport damage/ mutilation/ theft losses. etc etc.” Do we answer “yes”, because it has not been or “no” my passport has not been limited etc.etc This was a little tricky, but just want to make sure I am answering correctly.
Maybe an odd question but is the USPS priority mail stiff envelope suitable for mailing your application? Or is it better to put all the contents in a manila envelope and mail it like that? Thank you so much for this article. I’ve been stressing for weeks about doing the paperwork, because I’m bad at forms, but your article helped me get the application done in less than 10 minutes!
Hi, I am traveling over seas in July and have to renew my little brother who is 16 and will be 17 at the time of travel passport. I noticed because of COVID expediting passports does not work anymore and what forms would I have to fill out. I prefer writing by hand and delivering everything in person at a postal service near me. I am in Northern VA. Thank you your article was very helpful.
So, I have a question about their ‘processing’ time. They claim that the processing time starts when they receive my application. However, the date they’re showing for my status is about 5 days later than my tracking info shows they received it. Is it possible to call them and ask about this discrepancy?
I have a US Passport which expired in 2008. Since I am a Naturalized Citizen (Germany) and my US Naturalization Certificate was destroyed in a hurricane, I need a valid passport for ID to get my Drivers License renewed. I held a valid license in the State of Texas for the last 30 years (without tickets), but now they will not even accept my expired passport as proof of citizenship. It is extremely difficult to replace my Citizenship paper and to renew my passport would be much easier. Please advise me. Thanks!
I sent my renewal in on June 1, 2021, paying the $110 fee (did not know about the expedited fee); however I did not include my passport. Should I reapply? Also my passport expires o Jan. 31, 2022 and I am scheduled to go to South Africa on a birding tour on September 29, 2021. Obviously I should have watched this article before sending in my renewal form. Is there anything I can do?
I have send my passport for renewa.i used traceable usps service and It was delivered to the facility where it sat for a month. After that when I tracked the status of my application it says it is in process and may take up to 60days. They have cashed the check and it’s been additional 30 days and no info. Is it normal or very slow due to covid? I find this odd as before even the regular service renewal was a few weeks… any guidance will be appreciated… thanks
there’s some information needed, before I can continue on to fill out form DS82. And when they ask me for my “Date of Birth”, I tried multiple ways, and they keep saying I entered a wrong birthdate, theres an error.. So please tell me how am I supposed to type my date of birth. Its October .1, 1979. Im applying for a renewal USA passport, from Cairo Egypt .
section A: the last 2 questions are so confusing, my name has not changed since 1973? when i married then around 1980 i divorced and kept my married name. the answer is between my name has not changed and my name has changed. i feel like i should circle no my name has not changed and x out my name has changed and check yes my name has not changed. also question 9 on the renewal application is confusing i was married once before my present name. so these 2 questions i do not know how to answer
I am in a bind. I have only 64 days to get my passport renewed. I return from international trip on July 30, 2023 and leave again on international trip on 10/3/23. I know they look at the date of travel on the expedited form, but there is also some number to call when travel is within 14 days. What do you suggest I do since it is taking 7-9 weeks right now to get an expedited passport, not including mailing time. I do plan to use priority mail express. Laurel Dunlap
