How To Set Up A Cake Walk?

Cakewalks are a fun way to engage all ages at block parties or organizations’ fundraisers. To set up a cake walk, gather supplies such as upbeat music, numbered squares or circles, and lots of cakes and goodies for prizes. Mark a circular path on the ground with chalk or tape, and divide it into numbered squares. Place a cake walk carnival booth in your church or school event and decide how many players you want to include in each round.

Cakewalk by BandLab is available 100% free for 64-bit Windows, 8, 10, and 11. Install the software and log in using Facebook, Google, or by creating a Username and Password combination. The game involves playing music while participants walk around the circle, drawing numbers, and awarding a cake to the person standing on that square.

There are various ways to set up a cake walk, including numbering the cakes, having cake walkers stand in a circle, and playing festive music using a portable music player or radio. Players can either move or dance in a circular fashion, and when the music stops, they must claim the number closest to their spot.

To start the cake walk, have each player select a number to start on and play the music. As the music plays, everyone walks around the circle, stepping from one spot to another. Cakewalks can be used to raise support for schools, charities, or other organizations.

In summary, cakewalks are a fun and engaging way to engage all ages at various events, such as school carnivals or holiday parties. To set up a successful cake walk, gather supplies, set up the game, and choose the purpose for the money raised.

Vaudeville stars Bert Williams and George Walker (both Black) were known for cakewalks. The cakewalk was so popular in the US that local championships were held in New York’s Madison Square Garden from 1892. The dance was performed in Europe in 1889 at the Paris World’s Fair.

  • I’m not even a musician, I’m just dipping my toes on production so I can do some stuff on my own for my articles and indie games. But then I started playing with the program and it’s all so fun, I’m making a little remix of The Entertainer and I’m having so much fun, makes me wanna become a musician for real lol

  • I have been struggling with cakewalk for a while and I am thrilled that I found your tutorial. I love how you simplified it every step of the way to make it easier for beginners to understand. I am looking forward to more articles and would love to know how to set up the fender micro in cakewalk, and sink voice recording with thek recorded instruments.

  • Cheers mate im 42 and this type of recording is completely new to me, im used to following cables into numerous pedals etc, all the fun stuff. Finding it harder to get people that still want to record or make music, well fuk ’em now I dont need a drummer, strange creatures anyway. cheers from the UK pal.

  • Thanks so much. I am new to the concept of recording and mixing the music I play. I started becoming involved with the hardware, software, and all other aspects to performing on line, zoom, jamulus, and others when we were all shut down due to Covid. What a journey! Between a language the industry has of it’s own and uniqueness of each piece of hardware it is nothing less than frustrating. As far as DAW’s go I have tried many, oh my. THANK YOU for this article. It is the first that I have seen that COMPLETELY explains everything to get started. As an example many tutorials will click on %#@$ button, but never show where the button is. Reason enough to go postal. You showed the button and it worked. Fantastic thanks.

  • Seriously excellent! So clear and concise. Thanks so much for spending so much time making awesome articles like this, they make so much difference to people like me that love to play and have just started investigating the world of DAWs, which seem pretty daunting to begin with. Can’t wait to try recording now!

  • Thanks Zane, this article was so helpful. I upgraded from Audacity to Cakewalk about a week ago and It did feel a little intimidating at first lol. I figured it out pretty fast but you answered a lot of questions I had. I got really into bass guitar like a year ago and I’m obsessed. I’m learning as much as I can about music. I got my little studio set up going and learning a lot of theory, production, composing, arranging, etc. I think I’m gonna to try and create my first song

  • Thanks Zane! Having just downloaded Cakewalk onto my new PC, I have found these articles really helpful. It’s been a long time since I used Cubase on an Atari ST (honest!) and the world has moved on soooo much that it has been rather overwhelming. You articles are clear, concise and easy to follow, which is just what I need right now! Thanks so much for helping out!

  • I really like using cakewalk (albeit after just one day 😅). After I got my midi controller and audio interface device drivers installed, everything simply worked when I went through the steps shown in this tutorial. I can’t say the same about some other DAWs and some of the other ones weren’t so kind with introductory plugins as well. Great tutorial on a great starting DAW!

  • Really great article. I’ve been using Cakewalk since version 3 (by 12 tone Systems) Yes, I’m that old. There’s so much about Cakewalk that I haven’t learned or used. I start fooling around with my music. Then something comes up and I don’t touch it for a few months. So, anything that I DID know I have forgotten and have to start all over again. And now that covid is keeping me in the house I suddenly find myself with a ton of time on my hands. I’ll be binge perusal your vids and trying out everything I’ve learned. Thanks for posting!!!

  • Zane, I really like all of your Cakewalk instruction articles! It’s a lot to learn, but you make it very clear, and go step by step. Your pace is just right! I dabbled in Audacity recently and didn’t care for it. Before that, it was n-Track Studio which worked for me for years, but lately something changed. Thumbs up, and I subscribed!

  • I wanted to see if I could find other cakewalk tutorials outside of the one creator I have been trying to follow and stumbled on your website and this article by pure accident. Been putting off doing anything with cakewalk and music production because I’ve been so lost in the interface and all this other intimidating newbie stuff. But this walkthrough article is extremely well put together, clearly articulated so far (only about 60% through the article), and it’s been IMMENSELY helpful. Thank you! Definitely subbed because I see a few other articles of interest that I’d like to check out after this.

  • Your article is a perfect learning tool; I sincerely appreciate the time and thought that you put into making the presentation so concise verbally, and easy to follow visually. (I recently spent days reading through a 70 page manual for a tascam DP-03SD; and 11 mins into your article, the use of multiple instruments using f/x amp sim, has made starting up with Cakewalk seem so simple. 😅What a relief that the learning curve for Cakewalk is so much quicker to get to make an entire song with various instruments; using amp sims, and midi, for keyboard and drums. I am looking forward to perusal the rest of this article – Thanks to you, I am going to be able to start using Cakewalk, to try out my midi drums, and keyboard, this afternoon. Much sooner than I anticipated; given how prohibitively time consuming it was for me to get up to speed with modern pc, and audio gear; I have been reading more instruction manuals, and perusal tutorial articles 😖than grad school exam week. Originally setting about to convert my old 4-track cassettes into digital ( back when all I needed to know how to use were instruments, amps, mics, tsr cables, the 4 track, and a cassette player). After buying an audio interface, stereo monitor – I got a new keyboard, 8 track, mics, drum midi controller and built a faster pc hoping to get up to speed with modern DAW. Just wanted you to know, this article has made my day. ✨ The amount of steps to get from point A to B, so I can create a song with guitars/keyboard/percussion and vocals – with the plethora of new options, enabled by modern audio tech, has been made less of a tedious labyrinth thanks to your excellent educational 🥇Audio Tech Tv.

  • Beautiful …Zane, thanks for taking the time to do this.. Simple and great for someone like me who is actually qualified ( Logic / Pro Tools…etc ). Have been away from the game for a while. My iMac died and finances won´t let me get back to Mac world. This reminds me a lot of Logic. Very quick to get recording so ideas don´t get lost. Chrz and thanks again. I splurged on a Focusrite interface so all good to go.

  • What I wish someone would have taught in these beginner lessons when I got started was setting the inputs for guitar and bass before adding the amp sim and the importance of know the difference and choosing the recording options of Comping, Overwrite, and Sound on Sound. Oh and of course gone over the power of the Pro website before I downloaded and installed every free plugin I could find. lol

  • I used to use cakewalk yeeeears ago, never quite got the hang of it, but now I’m playing with this new FREE version (handy cos pensioners don’t have a lot of money!) and I must say I’ve got half way through your first beginners guide and I had to stop to write this, WOW very good, thanks for making this easy for my tired old brain (just 66 yrs old here) I’m looking forward to using it, I’m just hoping that it fulfills my needs as all I want to do is play a backing track and further my bass playing, yes I’m a bassist🙂 so let see what the next load of articles brings, thanks again.

  • Outstanding tutorial… I enjoyed every minute of this article. I’ve always been old school recording studio, but it’s time to get on it. I have some standing invitations to collaborate so my goal is to become fluent in Cakewalk…. I really appreciate the article. Do you have a article or articles specifically on keyboards on cakewalk? Perhaps with a focus on voices for different keyboards?

  • Hello! I’m seriously just beginning to produce from SCRATCH and I hope things are going to go well for me QAQ your tutorial is great, but sadly I’m stuck in the recording step because latency problems. I’m buying an audio interface now, I hope it’s going to arrive soon! I’ll comment again once I could go further in your tutorial~

  • Im newborn fresh to producing music the article has helped me a lot with some basic but a lot of the stuff I didn’t quite understand what books or articles can I get to give me a better understanding on what it and how it works and effects tracks. For example I don’t know what a driver mode is or the differences between them. I need some sort of step by step guide for the more technical stuff. Such a difficult game.

  • Great article! Thanks for posting this. I am trying to transition from garageband to cakewalk. So a couple of questions so far. I get a pretty good echo in my guitar monitoring why is that? Also I created a drum loop from one of the presets and I could hear it fine right after I added it but once I created the guitar track to record with the drum track, the drum track went silent. I couldnt figure out how to make it audible. What did I do wrong in that case? I feel like I followed your set up exactly. I am using a focusrite scarlett 2i2. One other thing is the initial monitoring has only sound in left ear until I go into the track setting (guitar track) and change from stereo to “L”.

  • I am following your great and enjoyable tutorials on this DAW 🙌! to use it against others that I currently use. I have a question and I don’t know if you or someone else can help me, I’ll tell you: when I have a control surface and a midi keyboard, both configured, when loading a midi file by default the control surface is assigned as output, so the virtual instrument does not sound and I have to change this track by track. Is there a way to avoid this in the preferences? Thank you very much and I hope to continue learning a lot with your articles!!!

  • I don’t here the midi keyboard that I set up with this musical project—–on this same project when i am trying to record a vocal part the midi it does not play where I can here it with music, I can here the drums audio however, is this some type of input or output issue ( or just your expert—advice needed). ….That I don’t quiet understand? Thank you appreciate much !!!!!! your articles and right to the point too!

  • Thanks a lot for this tutorial ! This is super useful and is so easy to understand. I only encountered an issue but has to do more with my drivers I think. I have realtek driver, and seems that if I choose ASIO on the preferences as you did, it gives me a warning and suggests to change it to WASAPI which I did. Then on my outputs, I only chose the one from my audio interface, and didn’t pick the one coming out from my monitor (don’t have extra speakers for the moment, only my headphones) but as soon as I do that, Youtube stops working for issues with the audio. So closing Cakewalk will let me use again youtube, and is the same the other way around, if I use Youtube, then Cakewalk can’t really “hear” the instrument I plugged in. Any idea or suggestion about this ? Once again thanks a lot for this article ! is super useful !

  • Thank you for this wonderful tutorial . I have a problem with the display that I can not find a fix for. The left and right side of the interface is cut off a little on each side File save and everyihing below it are cut off same thing on the right side . Full screen mode does not correct it and stetch sideways or diagnol does not fix it. I can hover and the popup will show me all the info . i would like to know how to get it to appear as it is suppose to . Is there a unlock setting that will allow custom resizing? Thanks in advance for any help from anyone with this issue. Thanks again .

  • need your help, i have recorded a drum track using the step sequencer and it works fine.. Now i am trying to add a guitar part, my guitar is plugged in my sound card, it works all right, but when i play both tracks, problem, both are mixed and play wrong. is there a problem with micing midi and audio ?

  • Hi! Thanks for the useful article! But I have a problem. I use a Minilab 3 and am a very new to Cakewalk. The thing is that everytime I try to use Analog Lab there’s this voiceover anytime I move a knob or a fader. It’s so loud i cant use it. I also can’t find any enable accessibility option anywhere neither the DAW or the plug in.

  • Could you tell me how I take a sound created from a plugin and make into midi. I recently created a sound in a plugin called Vital and I love the way it turned out but when I try to make into midi from the piano roll, it has no sound. What I do is create a new track, apply my plugin, create my sound, and then I open the piano roll to draw in notes but the only sound is coming from my plugin. Did I do something wrong? Am I missing something here? Do I have to click something inside my plugin to all the sound to be drawn out? I really need help.

  • Good day! needed some help. Im using Cakewalk by BANDLAB (laptop). In Cakewalk recording, why is it that my 2nd Track is recording my 1st Track even if I already turned off record button on the 1st Track? Let say my 1st track I recorded piano, then in the 2nd Track for the bass… but when I arm the 2nd track to record, before I even record the bass, it immediately records the 1st track.\r THANK YOU!. im using AUDIO TRACK not MIDI.

  • How to add more (5, 10, 16) additional tracks playing each different midi instrument from my Yamaha (PSR-sx600)? When I add 3 or more midi tracks, in my case all of them play the same instrument from my Yamaha (or except 1, all others play piano). I want each of 5-16 tracks in Cakewalk to play different midi instrument from my Yamaha.

  • Hi Zane. Thank you for your article clips regarding Sonar tutorial. I’m new to this world. I’m using Sonar 8.5 with Scarlett Focusrite 18i8 and Rod NT1 condensed microphone. I inserted an audio track and configured input (microphone 1 Left) & output (Master). My microphone is connected but no sound even though the light on my Scarlett is flashing. Please advice!

  • What gets me is, audio interfaces are sold as “192, 24 bit”, best audio etc etc (Like my SSL2+), then we have to set it in Cakewalk at 44.1 or 48…. I’ve had mine set at 192, and just lately, after recording just ac gtr and vox, I can’t even add one plugin without it stuttering etc… do I need more RAM? (Have 16GB at moment) or have I done something wrong in Cakewalk? Many thanks for any advice 🙁

  • For some reason, I cannot shorten an audio clip because there is no cursor that comes up when I’m on the edge of a clip. And when I do press ALT to get that cursor to show up, it doesn’t actually do anything. Is there something I’m missing here? This used to work when I used to use Sonar, so I was very confused why they took this feature away. But, since I just watched you do it, it’s obviously still a feature that isn’t on my software. And solutions?

  • New subscriber. Not new to Sonar but my last experience was Producer 9. I had Presonus Firepods and ran it on windows xp. I had a template and was running DFH with no issues. Fast forward 12 years, I’m just getting back into recording. I just bought a universal audio Apollo twin x heritage. I went with the newest version of cakewalk because of having history. I CAN NOT get the vst amps to work in real time. I record, I get a clean sound from my guitar and then I go back and listen, it’s got the distortion like reamping. I CAN’T figure out what’s wrong. I bring up the amps and I get nothing. Any help would be awesome. Yes I did research and watch your article on it and it still won’t work.

  • Could someone help me. ive gotten myself a Alesis VI49. My question is how do you bind all the knobs and such on my keyboard as it dosent seem to function but you gotta be able to bind and such with cakewalk? I have looked everywhere and i cant seem to find where to bind things to the knobs and buttons. Would be nice to be able to use all those extra buttons. Really hope someone can help me as im losing hope in cakewalk and would rather not spend 200 on FL studio thank you all!

  • Question been doing multitrack I don’t know how to use doors don’t need it right now but I was thinking how would you use this if you wanna listen to it in the car let’s say yeah I could get a flash drive with a side part for the US but it won’t accept it so what gives Where can I play this other than the item itself

  • Can I record a track, guitar for example, that is only needed at certain part of the mix can I copy the part I need them past it like 2 minutes down into the song with nothing but space in between? If that made sense. I’m a solo artist writing for every instrument but on the first song I’m working on I need to do this but am unsure how offhand.

  • been using it for a while and I love it! just one technical question, when I make 2 tracks, lets say one beat and the other is audio recording to sing along, when I hit record on the second website, it starts recording the beat from first track through my audio interface. it still records my voice but it also records the beat from the other track I domt understand how.. how can I separate tracks inputs or what should I do?

  • When I click on ‘insert virtual instruments’ as shown at 11:42, I don’t have that list of stuff that “comes with Cakewalk.” Which folder location in Preferences do I need to edit that path for, and what default folder would those files be in? Admittedly, I have a somewhat bastardized install of Cakewalk, in the I didn’t let it pick default everything. I didn’t want to bog down my small C drive, so I have as many things as possible in my supplemental D drive (SSD). I’d happily uninstall and reinstall Cakewalk if I need to in order to fix these issues, but I’m afraid I’ll lose projects or various plugin locations I’ve accrued over time.

  • Does anybody know how I can make all the keys on my midi sound with the same volume? My midi keyboard is totally fine, and when I used Fl studio I just adjusted velocity flat and my keys just sounded with the same volume, but the volume wouldn’t change no matter how hard I pressed on them. Maybe can I do the same in Cakewalk or even better can I make my keys sound with the same volume but with the remaining of the function “when I press harder it is louder”?

  • I’m not a beginner, so much so, I’ve hit somewhat of a ‘writers block’ due to a recent tragedy that struck my country of Australia. 👮👮‍♂️💔🇦🇺 Found your website, watched this article, gave me time to reflect. You’ve got a good voice and style of teaching that i found most engaging. I’m one for giving credit where credit is due. I thoroughly enjoyed this article mate. This is the article I needed when I actually paid for Cakewalk Pro waaay back for just under $1000 Aussie dollars. 😂 I’ve only ever paid for one plug-in ( I only use free ones) The plug-in is called Tru Pianos. If you know this plugin or better free versions, I would dearly appreciate your opinion of it. For me it’s my go-to every day play plug-in. It’s gotta be at least 10 years old I think but yeah mate, curious if you have ever used Tru Piano. Cheers from a new fan mate .

  • Is it possible to edit a track in a midi file, like deleting part of the melody and saving the rest? Just checked your playlist, but I didn’t see anything like that. I’m not planning to create songs, only edit available midis to make backing tracks. Hope you can do a tutorial for that. I used to do that in an older version, like really old in windows xp, but xp is gone and I have a mac now. Any help will be really appreciated.

  • Came to see if there was a nice method to arrange things but I don’t like the cut n’ paste element of the original master track recordings being the same place as the song composition. I would expect any recorded takes to be able to be used as clips but that doesn’t solve all the issues that arise. Currently my only option is to export audio and order it elsewhere but that sucks when you need to edit samples.

  • my music teacher has been slow nudging me to add composition to my learning because I am a multi instrumentalist… So in 48 hours the midi cable comes via internet.. This is scary, I feel I know too much music and not enough music.. that I’ll never be as good an instrumentalist as my Pa, but then I remember I never wanted to be the lead string/wind I like being part of the band so it’s fine if I can’t play what my Pa could. I’ll learn to make my own music now he’s gone and I have to be lead string/wind.

  • Just what I was looking for! YouTube despite it’s many flaws is still the greatest things humans ever made 🙂 I thought one day “I want to make music”, a week later I have a mini studio setup and this morning I downloaded Cakewalk and bought a synth. This evening I am perusal this, so in 6-7 days time I have completed the setup and now can begin! This website clearly going to be very useful.

  • Good tutorial while some steps are a bit fast (and therefore unclear) for people who just opened the program for the first time. I believe that people who are familiar with DAW’s love it. My first impression is that the program isn’t as intuitive as it could and should be. Right from the get go it’s a hassle to get it to make some sound. Then 6 minutes into the tutorial I want to make some noise with the bass guitar, just to find out that below a certain note on the piano roll it just doesn’t work at all. It took a while to figure that out. I’ll keep recording live instruments and align the tracks in the Fairlight page of DaVinci Resolve. This is more work, but much less frustrating.

  • Unfortunately, if you don’t know some of the terminology, this will be very confusing. When someone says “choose the correct this or that”, a person may not know what the correct setting is for what you’re telling them to do. I had this problem over and over! I have to go “bare bones basic” which will include what settings to start out with, connections and then go from there. Just my feedback. Thanks

  • How to set the MIDI controller ? I tested BandLab and other music programs, but I couldn’t set the controller MIDI. The programs supposedly saw ARTURIA MiniLab, but the inclusion did not work . I also have MPC Beats from Akai MPK Mini Play and it doesn’t work either, I can only play a virtual instrument with the mouse.

  • When i split and cut various segments in the middle of my audio clip, the timeline doesn’t automatically remove the gap. The gap created by my removing the middle portion stays in place and will result in silence. How can i make my timeline automatically line up with all the remaining segments right next to each other instead of gaps in between? Thank you.

  • Tbh I don’t use DAW. Worried about loss in sound quality. Anytime I heard a DAW sound I didn’t think the sound quality was very good. Just like the sounds on this article. Also yes I am a musician but I had cakewalk on my pc for over a year then eventually uninstalled it as I just couldn’t get my head around it and wasn’t able to do anything. I just record each thing into my in built sequencer and the quantize it. Then play it back into movie edit program. Do this for each track. Tbh it is pretty handy as then when I do the article I have all the music on the same program. But I was told at school I would never be able to read and write as my concentration span is not very good. But I gotba separate tutor and proved them wrong. So following instruction articles are not going to help me tbh. You see the problem is I love playing synths I am only interested in making music I really need someone else to record it properly for me because my concentration span on instruction articles I lose interest within the first few seconds. Not doing it purposely but I just can’t concentrate on what you are saying only for so long. It is really a learning issue I have.

  • Beginner, still, after months of perusal tutorials. At 1:32 dragging and dropping is so fast, hard to know where you went to find that. Trying to learn this program but frustrating when so much is assumed and sequenced action is fast even if voice seems to be at good pace. Would be great to demonstrate those steps clearly. Thanks

  • It’s little disappointing how I can’t use this CWN right out of the box to compose some music, while me from almost 20 years ago was able to do just that with an older version of SW without any help. Older version was very intuitive so much so that I could literally learn the program by just using it but not this new CWN which I couldn’t even figure out how to pull out the piano for notes.

  • Hi there. I was mixing for one of my projects when I randomly wanted to try using the hidden ‘Drum Replacer’ plugin (I’m an idiot) on one of the tracks which in hindsight I shouldn’t have. Cakewalk immediately crashed, and upon reopening, audio wouldn’t play for some reason. I have absolutely no idea why. I can see the tracks are technically playing, and I can see the volume on the individual tracks but the master bus isn’t responding. I’ve tried multiple things, plugging in/out my soundcard, rerouting tracks, etc, but the audio just wouldn’t play. All I hear is a popping/crackling sound when I hit ‘play’ and ‘pause’. Audio otherwise works for new projects, so not sure what really happened post the software crash that was triggered by the drum replacer. Not even sure if that was what caused it. Can you/anyone PLEASE advise because I’m absolutely lost for ideas?
