To add sequins to a wedding dress, choose a size and shape that complements the dress. Use a needle and thread or a glue gun to attach the sequins. Tie a knot in the thread first and then the fabric with the needle. The knot is on the underside. Repeat for additional sequins.
Sequin fabric can be sewn individually, with beads, or in lines. To attach sequins in a row, use back stitches, two straight stitches, or a bead. For a more secure fit, tie the ends of the thread together. Place a line on the fabric where you want the sequins to be, if desired. Stitch up through the fabric and back down in the same spot or close to it.
To sew single sequins without visible thread, bring the needle up through the center and string one seed bead in a matching or contrasting color. Can you add sequins to a wedding dress?
Do you want to add sequins and pearls to lace on a dress? It’s easy. I’ve done it on cocktail dresses, my wedding dress, and a bolero. Buy the sequins, beads, or pearls you want at most hobby and craft stores. You need Aleens Ticky Tack, or something like it, sold near the other glues at craft stores. It’s made for sticking things like sequins, pearls, and beads to fabric. It’s white but dries clear. I put waxed paper under the lace to keep the glue from sticking to the table. I use a paper plate and put a little glue on it. I then use a toothpick to apply the glue to the area I want to adhere the bead to, then place the bead on the glue dot. If I know where I want to put the bead, I’ll put a few dots on the lace and attach it. You can do a few dots at a time before the last one dries. Let the garment sit for 24 hours before turning it over or hanging it up.

Do you need a special needle to sew sequins?
Sewing sequins tips. You can sew over small sequins, but not larger ones. Remove larger sequins from the seam allowance with a seam ripper before sewing. Most sequins are sewn onto delicate mesh, so use a walking foot or tape your feed dogs to avoid tangling. Use a 16/100 ballpoint needle. Keep a spare needle on hand in case your needle gets stuck on a sequin. Also, keep some hand sewing tools on hand to reattach stray sequins. If your project has thin straps or delicate details, sew them with matching fabric and add sequins from fabric scraps. Avoid using a hot iron! Sequins can melt when heat is applied, so use a steamer instead. If your fabric needs to be smoothed, use a handheld steamer or hang it in the bathroom during a steamy shower. If you need to press a seam, use a press cloth to protect the fabric and keep your iron low. Check the base layer of your sequin fabric for fraying. If the sequins are attached densely, finishing the seam is usually unnecessary. Do not serge over sequin seams unless you want to replace your serger blade. If your inner seams feel scratchy, you can bind them with a matching bias binding to provide comfort. You don’t have to suffer to look fabulous. Finish your hem by pressing up once and slipstitching in place. If you’re worried about fraying or want to soften it, cut a piece of bias 1.5 wide. Sew to the hem using a 1/2 seam allowance and wrap the bas around the seam for a flat, smooth finish. Have fun sewing sequins for your next special event!
