How To Tell If An Engagement Ring Is Fake?

To spot a real diamond from a fake, perform simple tests such as using the fog test, reading the read-through test, and verifying the seller’s legitimacy. A diamond tester can be used to determine if a stone is a real diamond or a fake. Loose diamonds can be tested using this method, while mounted ones are easier to test.

The fog test involves placing the stone in front of your mouth and fogging it. If you have a real diamond engagement ring, compare it with the ring in question to understand its quality. If you have inherited or received a gift of gems or jewelry, it’s important to know how to spot a fake diamond.

Tiffany and Co. jewelry is known for its high level of craftsmanship, with stone settings on authentic pieces being clean, consistent, and well-tooled. The more it fogs and the longer the fog lasts, the more likely it is to be fake. High-quality diamonds should not fog at all, and noticeable fogginess that lasts for two or more seconds is a sign of a fake diamond.

There are two ways to tell if a diamond is fake: a vertical stack of three evenly spaced stones, and a circular reflection inside the gemstone. A fake diamond will float at the top of the surface or in the middle of the glass. Heat up the stone and see if it shatters.

Looking underneath the diamond or gemstone is another way to identify a fake. Precious jewellery looks precious from all angles, while old costume jewelry may not be as valuable.

Do fake rings have markings?

Look for hallmarks or markings. They are usually on the inside of a ring or bracelet, the post of an earring, or the clasp of a necklace. If the clasp doesn’t have a marking, it’s probably costume jewelry.

Can you test a diamond with your phone?

Use your phone’s flashlight to test if a diamond is real. Shine the light on your diamond and look at how it reflects. A real diamond will flash brightly and sometimes create rainbows. A real diamond ring is usually made from high-quality metals like platinum or gold. This is a good way to tell if you have a real gemstone.

This is also called the diamond fog test. Breathe on your stone to see if it gets foggy. A real diamond won’t stay foggy.

How can you tell if it’s a diamond or cubic zirconia?

Diamonds are the hardest substance in the world. They are about as hard as diamonds. Zirconium is softer and its hardness is 8.5 on the Mohs scale. If you can’t tell the difference between these stones in a jewelry shop, look at them in the brightest light. Diamonds sparkle white or silver. Cubic zirconia will sparkle in different colors. Another difference is that diamonds have sharp facets, while zirconium does not. These are some of the ways to tell the difference between these two stones. These features make it easy to choose between diamonds and cubic zirconia. Some people say that cubic zirconia isn’t as good as a diamond.

How to test a real diamond ring at home?

Test a loose diamond in water. Fill a glass about ¾ of the way full with water. Drop the diamond into the glass. If the diamond sinks, it’s real. If it floats, it’s probably fake. With the rise in popularity of lab-grown diamonds and moissanite, it’s helpful to understand how to tell the difference between them and how they match up with a mined diamond. While lab-grown diamonds are real, it’s important to know the difference because lab diamonds cost about 30% less than mined diamonds. They have the same chemical and molecular properties, so only a diamond expert can tell the difference. They will test the diamond’s conductivity and look at it under a microscope.

Moissanite is also a synthetic material. All moissanite we have is lab-grown versions of a rare substance found in meteorite fragments over 100 years ago. It’s hard to tell the difference between real diamonds and moissanite, so you’ll need a professional. A professional can tell that moissanite is more brilliant than lab-grown diamonds because it has a higher refractive index. It’s more intense and flashes in fiery, rainbow colors. This effect is more noticeable in sunlight and larger stones. The best way to find out is with an electricity conductivity test.

To test if your diamond is real or fake, put it in fire. Light the stone with a lighter for about 30 seconds, then drop it in cold water. If it’s a real diamond, it won’t break. If it’s fake, it will. Weaker materials can’t handle the heat and expansion and contraction. Unlike real diamonds that formed billions of years ago. You can also take it to your local jeweler to have it weighed. If it’s a fake, it’ll weigh more than an actual diamond of the same size and shape. Cubic zirconia weighs about 55% more than a diamond. If your diamond is certified or graded, you can match it to the weight. To test, you need two stones of the same shape and size (one you know is real). A real diamond will turn blue under a UV light. • There is no such thing as a fake engagement ring? An engagement ring is a ring that you give to the person you’re proposing to. A Wal-Mart ring can be an engagement ring, a ring pop can be an engagement ring. A twist tie can be an engagement ring. All that matters is the love they have for each other.

  • It really doesn’t matter of it’s a fake one. The important part is that he loves her. That he’s not with someone else. It is a ring. Yes, it is important for the marriage and everything but at the end of the day it is just a piece of jewelery. It would be nicer if it was a real ring for this special ocassion but maybe he can’t afford one. The important thing is how the relationship is going to go. For example, a man can give the most precious and expensive ring in the world and end up in a toxic relationship without love and trust. He cheats on her and completely screws up their marriage. Other man can buy a ring made out of candy that probably costs $5. They are together for ever in a sane, lovely relationship and stay together until they die. Did the ring really matter in the end? I think it didn’t. The actual issue here is that he told her that it was a real one. A relationship can’t be built by lies.

  • I mean… the whole concept of proposing with a diamond ring is a commercial scheme, it always has been. A very successful and profitable one. For me personally, I probably wouldn’t connect with someone who held that object more dearly than a relationship, but I don’t think that was the point here; the point was that she clearly cared about its significance and he was proposing with a lie right out of the gate. As far as relationships go, it’s the lie that’s “unethical” here, not really anything to do with the ring itself or materialism.

  • My dad proposed to my mom with a plastic ring because he couldn’t afford the real thing and my mom didn’t care she loved him! 22 years of marriage and 5 kids later my dad finally gave her a diamond ring shaped as a rose with a Gold band. My mom said ” I don’t care about money, jewelry or anything except my love for you!” In all it doesn’t matter what u propose with what matters is love!❤❤❤

  • my husband proposed to me with a 25 cent ring from a vending machine 😂💕 he couldn’t afford a real one yet so that’s what he gave me. I didn’t, and still don’t, care for some flashy ring. As long as he’s with me. 😊😍❤️ EDIT: Thank you all so much for the positive feedback and no judgment ! & Yes, I have a diamond ring now ( even though I would have been happy with my vending machine one 😂❤️❤️ )

  • We where young and poor when my husband proposed. Had just finished college. I’ve never liked diamonds or jewellery. A thin gold ring and of course I said YES! I didn’t marry the ring I married my love. Still love him so much after 32 years. But to pretend it’s a diamond ring like this guy. That’s not OK.

  • Why is it such a big deal if the ring is fake????? Some people can’t afford REAL rings! But it doesn’t matter whether the diamond is fake as long as the love is real! Now lying is WRONG! But for all we know we was going to tell her, just not right during the purposel. Why would she even care any way? Marriage is about love not gaining a new fancy peice of jewelry.

  • i mean i proposed with a stuffed animal i’ve had since the day i was born. it means a lot to me since it came from my grandparents from my fathers side who are no longer with me and it meant a lot to me sentimentally and she loved it. cost 0 dollars and she said yes screw a stupid ring none of my family used rings either

  • Everyone’s saying the price of the ring doesn’t matter if he loves her and that’s true but I think the main point of the article is that he was wrong to lie to her. If she loved him she wouldn’t care about the price of the ring like y’all said so he could be honest than starting their marriage on lies. If he thinks it’s okay to lie about this, what else would he lie about?

  • the thing about this though is that to me the real problem lies in the fact that he’s going around telling strangers that it’s fake, and then proposing to her right in front of them, kind of making a fool of her. it doesn’t matter what you propose with if you and your partner have talked about it and are honest with each other…

  • Stop saying first. Shut up and enjoy the article. Edit: Ok, so some of you have been saying, “Stop being so salty.” or, “Jelly much?” First off, I’m a human being. Not salt. The only thing salty here is my smart attitude. Second, I’m not jelly. And I’d prefer to just use the actual word jealous .Why? Because I prefer to use the word “Jelly” as a food. Like peanut butter and jelly. And for that one person who said that people just like to celebrate how fast they clicked a article, like what the…? I don’t understand why you need to celebrate on clicking a article. I’d rather be celebrating that I survived another day in school or that my softball team won the tournament. We were undefeated, the whole season, because of me being catcher ((I love being the catcher.)). Wanna know why I’m good at it? Because I focus on softball and not some other ridiculous things like being first to a article. And for whoever is trying to annoy me by saying “First”, just know you’re not doing it very well. I only count it if it’s first to the article. Not just repeated to make me say, “This person is getting on my nerves.” Anyways, this is just my opinion. So don’t be a sensitive ((You know, I don’t want to trigger any people out there with a word that will send them crying to mommy.)). So, explode at me all you want, but I don’t really care. I’ll either reply with something smart-alek or with nothing at all ((I have school, band, other activities, but I’ll try to reply when I have the time to write another paragraph long message.

  • “Better to have a fake ring and a real man, than a fake man with a real ring” that’s one of the stupidest statements I’ve ever heard. 🤦🏾‍♀️ if the guy is giving you something fake and not telling you the truth about it, then it’s not just the ring that’s fake, he’s fake too! Smh. Just be honest! It’s more about the honesty than the ring being fake! You can’t afford a ring right now so what? Tell her! if she loves you she’ll stick by you! If he starts lying now what else is he gonna lie about when they’re married! I’d give her hints to get the ring checked out or something. This could be a red flag in a relationship. If not I’d at least talk to the guy in private to come clean…

  • I would totally say nooooothing to a woman that experiences this. I respect that not everyone can afford a ring that is rated as perfectly expensive by the society. So if a guy does not have the money, he does not have the money. I must admit at the same time, that the rings that I rate as beautiful start at $800, BUT if the man that truely loves me from the bottom of his heart could not afford it, than his love would be my diamond. And no real diamond could replace it. Over.

  • I feel like most people here aren’t being entirely honest about not wanting a nice ring. I’d want my partner to get me a ring to the best of their financial capabilities, it would show their commitment to me. That they are willing to spend money on me. (in terms of their income) its not about wanting an expensive ring but instead knowing that your partner is putting in their best effort and giving you what you deserve as they ask your hand in marriage. That would be a very good indication that they’re willing to support you and won’t be cheap when it comes to working together as a married couple in the future.

  • My husband was waiting to propose because he couldn’t afford a fancy ring. I told him I didn’t want a fancy ring, I wanted him. We picked out an awesome ring together with a nice CZ stone. Never cared a bit that it wasn’t a diamond. Only $300! As someone else said, lying is worse than trying to save money.

  • My husband proposed on our first date without a ring, I thought it was a joke and said “okay, sure”, we got married a couple weeks later. We were teenagers and when he did get me a ring it was tiny but all he could afford at the time. He eventually upgraded my ring in a major way and I absolutely love it but I never needed the big ring because I loved him more. We’ve been together 13 years and counting. I do think in a scenario like this article, men should be honest if they can’t afford a big diamond and if she loves you, she wont care.

  • So a lot of people on the comments are saying they wouldn’t step in/it’s not their business… and while I see where they are coming from, I think it’s more the way he was so cocky and open about the fact that he totally fooled her about the value of the ring. The price of a ring shouldn’t have any weight in a relationship, but when he made it about value and deceiving his fiancée that’s when he crossed the line I think.

  • If the scenario is that the man doesn’t have much to spend and feels bad, it would be much different than this guy who’s acting like a jerk for getting one over on her. Still, if you need to start out with a lie, it’s not the right relationship. I’d be pissed. I’d rather have a small, nice looking ring that’s affordable than one that’s huge and flashy, personally. On the same note, if the woman is that shallow that she wouldn’t be happy with a small, conservative ring, she’s not worth it, either.

  • my husband blew the BANK on my ring ($900.00 on a soldier’s salary!!) We, too, looked at rings. i told him nothing over $200.00, (we were moving, AND about to start a family). He was waiting 29 years for “the one” & didn’t care. i cared, lol! It caused a minor argument, but it’s something i remember fondly now. Btw, when did “tbh” become so prevalent? 😂😂 When WWYD is almost always about honesty, i think it’s especially ironic when ppl start their comments with: “TBH, ..”. A.K.A.: “To Not LIE, …” 😂😂😂😂💗💞

  • He might be a “real man” for the most part overall, but he’s being a “fake man” in this case because he’s giving her a fake ring and passing it off as something more than it is. If he can’t afford are nice ring right now, he should just tell her this is temporary, and that he will get her something better when he can afford to. I’m sure any woman that really loves you will understand that and will just be happy that you want to spend your life with her – even with the lesser ring. Don’t try and be something that you’re not, just be the man that she feel in love with. At the end of the day, even a little white lie like this could be hurtful to the relationship. It not worth taking risk over something like this that she would have been okay with if you had just been honest upfront.

  • i think that you can have any different kinds of engagement rings. it can be from the dollar tree, it can be a twist tie, a ring pop, it can even be a plastic one from the dentists office!! if it is real love, then they will not care what the ring is made out of. but, when you lie about it, well, i don’t accept that. 😟🙅‍♀️

  • Hmm this vid was great but I feel like they could have taken it up just one more notch I think his reasoning for getting a fake ring matters. Ex: is it because he is poor and he can’t afford one? if he is just being cheap he deserves to be exposed But i also see the perspective that it seems kinda demanding and materialistic for the woman to want the man to spend lots and lots of money just for her. It’s almost as if how much he spends on the ring is more important than the ring itself. Isn’t it more about what the ring represents (marriage and love)? Of course, it all depends on the intention. Just my thoughts

  • Me and my fiancé (where at the time) students we where damn broke, I got just a cheap ring from Svarowski that I really liked, I didn’t care that it was silver plated instead of real silver, it wasn’t a diamond it’s just a crystal. I love it and we are getting married this well done to the woman who said “better real man and a fake ring then a real ring fake man” soooooooooooo true! 😀

  • It’s not about whether it’s fake or real. Personally, I prefer a plain band because I do alot of work. Anyway, just don’t lie to people. If you need to buy a fake ring and pretend it’s a really expensive one to get the girl is she really even in love with you anyway? I’d accept a 25 cent ring if the promise was real.

  • honestly, I’d be happy if my boyfriend just bought me one of those $40 rings at Kohl’s, it’s pricey but not very cheap bc the rings are good condition and so long as you love them with all your heart, price and quality shouldn’t matter so long as it’s a sign that they want to stay with you, what more can you ask for? (plus if you lose it you don’t have to spend as much to get a new one) but I’d say you at least shouldn’t cheap out on the wedding ring because if he cheaps out on the offical ring that symobolizes your love, girl he just buttering you up to get you in bed that night
