How To Wear A Dress During Winter?

Winter outfits can be created by thinking outside the box, such as combining a blazer or oversized shirt as a dress or a dress as a skirt with a sweater. Layering knitted or embellished options over your outfit creates a warm ensemble that makes the most of what’s already in. To dress for cold weather, three layers should be worn: base layer, middle layer, and outer layer. To protect yourself from cold temperatures, wear thermal or silk long underwear beneath your clothes.

To dress for cold weather, aim to protect yourself from cold by wearing a chic wool wrap coat that defines your waist and matches the dressiness level of the dress. Cover your legs with opaque tights. To add layers, wear a long-sleeved tee under a sleeveless dress or a fabulous wool coat. To extend dress wearing into winter, wear a dress that hits just above the top of the boot and top with a jacket or coat that’s similar length and color.

Investing in high-quality waterproof snow boots is essential for facing unpredictable winter conditions in Chicago. Style your outfit with cozy black tights and a thick faux fur coat over top. Belt your dress to create shape when wearing multiple layers.

  • Thank you for another lovely article. I live in Ireland and the winters here are very cold and wet. I love wearing dresses or skirts and I wear thick tights and boots too. I also find that if I wear thermal underwear, like a vest (sorry don’t know what that is in “US” speak) underneath all my clothes it helps keep my core warm so I don’t ever get really really cold. I wear a slip too, like a petticoat, it keeps the layers of skirt and tights sitting nicely on your legs. One little tip, if you find lots of static between your legs and skirt, a quick spray of hair spray over your legs will fix that – honestly!! Love your website keep up the great content.

  • As I watched this I realized how much I owe my current style to your inspiration Jennifer! I love wearing knee length dresses with leggings, a big wool pashmina, and tall boots during winter, and I live in the Midwest where we have real winter! I did put on my jeans to walk my kids to school today and I noticed how cold my legs were! One of my best purchases last year was a pair of fleece-lined leggings from Aldi. Much warmer than jeans!

  • Hi Jennifer, I loved your article and I’m so excited to see the interview with Madame Lecoeur . I love to wear sweater dresses in winter. I prefer cashmere dresses as they are fine, warm and I can wear them directly on my skin. I usually buy them in May-June, when they get heavily discounted. They last forever if cared for properly.

  • I enjoyed this article. I have been wearing mostly dresses and skirts the last couple of years. They are so much easier to pull together a nice look and the fleece tights are a must. i discovered these LLBean dresses a few years back and they are so flattering. They are three seasons for me in the South. Thank you for setting a wonderful standard in modest clothing that is also beautiful.

  • I have worn skirts almost exclusively for the last 17 years and I find them warmer in winter with leggings and wool socks and boots. I hate pantihose!! This is our 3rd winter in Ireland and we find it pretty mild here – sometimes you can even do bare legs under a long skirt. I personally detest wearing slips, so always make sure my skirt fabric is thick enough that I don’t have to. Looking forward to Thursday’s interview!!

  • I’m so glad I discovered your articles! I saw Marie Ann Lecoeur had recommended your articles and I have been binge perusal them all day. They are all so useful. I’ll have to agree, as someone else stated in your classical music for kids, that you are truly a force for good in today’s world. Everything you promote in your articles is so classy, tasteful, and helpful. So refreshing!

  • Hi Jennifer, I am a skirt and jumper wearer in the winter and paired with leggings, boots and warm wool or cashmere sweaters, I feel warmer than when I used to wear jeans! I bought four Cabbages and Roses skirts last winter all wool and lined and honestly they are like having a blanket wrapped around my legs. They are perfect for our New England winters. I loved your outfits, that plaid coat is adorable!

  • Hi Jennifer! I’ve been following your website for the past few years, and I just want to say that I find you so inspiring! I admire how you are idealistic, yet also very down to earth and “real.” This particular article I especially enjoyed because I live in Northern Indiana where there is tons of snow for 4-5 months each year! Still, I’ve found it very doable to wear dresses year-round with the tips you mentioned. Please don’t ever stop making articles! I always look forward to perusal every article you post and glean so much inspiration and encouragement from you! Thank you!

  • Hello Jennifer, long time reader here, thank you for your always inspiring content! This collab sounds soo precious! The first time I watched Marie Anne, months ago, I immediately thought “Madame Chic must have been not too far from her” and now here she is, on your website! Can’t wait to watch more!

  • I’m a Chicagoan who wears DVF wrap dresses every day; for work, week-ends, outings, and special occasions (I don’t pay full-price–me, Ebay and consignment stores are best friends). I layer by wearing a cotton cami underneath the dress with tights, and a sweater (varying thickness based on the weather) under my coat. The thickness of the tights depends on whether it’s fall or winter. When it’s severely cold, I’ll wear what I call ‘stocking tights’ over my tights–they’re like thigh-highs but in a knit material. In brutal cold (last week Chicago at minus 50 degree windchills!), I will wear legwarmers over my tights–basically I just look like I’m wearing really thick tights. For fall, I like woolen or wool and cashmere coats and and a belted puffer coat in winter. And always, always a scarf, earmuffs, and gloves in Chicago winter! P.S. This morning it was 46 degrees. I spotted a lady wearing ONLY leggings and a halter-top while riding her bike–no coat, gloves, or hat–just her leggings and halter top showing all of her tattoos! I guess after last weeks brutal cold, today felt like spring…

  • This post is so inspiring and you look wonderfully cozy in your new (and old) boots. Today, because it’s raining here, I wore my very old waterproof suede ankle Aquatalia zip boots and, because I’m perusal my budget a la your Daily Connoisseur Teachable “Chic Financial Principles for Debt-Free Living” course, I had these very old, but well-made boots re-heeled at the local cobbler recently so they’re good for many more miles. Wearing layers is the key and will keep one toasty even when removing a coat and scarf. I run cold, even here in Southern California, and I’ve been wanting to buy fleece tights, so thank you for the link, and I can use one of my Amazon gift cards I received as a Christmas gift for them. I often wear black leggings or black tights under a dress with either ankle boots (Sam Edelman in black suede or taupe suede) and I will add a cardigan or blazer if I’m cold. I also like to wear a cardigan or a chunky oversized sweater with a skirt, too. In closing, I just wanted to say that your opening backdrop was so pretty with the white furniture and the pretty pink rose in the white vase, which I’m sure you made! Is this your sitting room or a bedroom? It’s so pretty. Also, as a pearl lover, I thought your drop pearl earrings were gorgeous and I would love a link for them, if you’re willing to share. You truly look fashionable in every season and I loved your style show!

  • Your article just inspired me to run upstairs and change into warm tights and a dress. I used to wear dresses all winter long (and I live in Canada!) but got out of the habit when I had kids. You made me realize that it’s not any harder than throwing on a pair of jeans before the school run. Thanks for another amazing article!

  • Thank you so much for these tips!! It’s 22 degrees out right now. I usually give up wearing dresses in the Winter because it gets too cold, but those tights sound so wonderful! I think they’ll make it possible for me to wear my dresses now. Thanks Jennifer! Looking forward to your interview with Marie-Anne Lecoeur. I’m a huge fan of hers. 💕, Kate

  • It’s -5 here in Toronto today (which is pretty nice for winter lol) or 23 degrees and I am wearing my fleece tights and a nice heavy jean dress. Another tip is be aware of what type of material you are wearing. In the winters I always go for heavier fabrics (think jeans, heavy cottons, wools etc) which helps with the cold as well โ˜บ๏ธ

  • I just spend the morning and afternoon perusal your articles… I think I have a good idea of what the 10 item wardrobe is…. I am looking forward to purging my closets, and finally looking presentable at all times. P.S: i got my first pair of Blondo Wedge booties for Christmas and I cannot stop wearing them, they are the most comfortable shoe.

  • I was so surprised when I woke up and saw two of my favorite you tubers with a article of the same topic today! I appreciate your ideas for wearing dresses in winter. I’m going to wear one today! I tend to wear dresses every day in spring and summer and even into fall because I live in central California but in winter rarely do because I get cold. I do love dresses though and feel better wearing them so I will try to layer more. (:

  • Although I live in Australia I walk and take public transport everywhere so I’m outside all year round. That combined with my love of dresses and the biting harbour breeze means I’m an expert on layering. I like to match my hat (usually a beret) with my pashmina for that day to keep me warm and cheerful. It also helps to add variety as I mostly wear the same coat to wear everyday that I’ve had for years. I love fleece tights too, they are wonderful during a really cold snap.

  • I live in Western NY and a staple in my winter wardrobe is dresses with different colored thick tights and flat knee high boots. Sometimes I wear leggings instead of tights or will wear them over tights outside on my walk to work, then take them off when I get in. Lots of sweaters over dressed as well. I also sometimes wear tights with knee high socks under my boots as well.

  • I wear skirts exclusively and recommend Uniqlo Heattech undergarments. Extremely thin fabric and WARM! Under the skirt itself I use a pantalette. Having lived in NYC, one Marilyn Monroe experience was enough for me and you’d be surprised how much wind a cotton pantalette keeps off your bottom. Lastly, 2 thumbs up on the fleece tights though the cashmere tights are warmer and thinner.

  • I like to occasionally wear dresses in the winter, too. This winter, I’m in NW Montana. That means lots of layering with skirts or dresses. One thing that I’ve done is add bike shorts under my tights plus a slip under the skirt for some extra layers. A denim skirt in place of jeans can be a fun option. I also like to wear my cowboy boots with skirts.

  • Hi Jennifer! Thank you for the tips. I need to invest in tights and the J Crew black coat :). I also subscribe to Madam Lecoeur. I agree, she is tres chic!! I cannot wait for the Thursday interview! Also, I just finished reading Lessons From Madam Chic. It was so enjoyable to read and I kept quoting parts of it to my friends that I feel need your insight and your book!

  • I used to love wearing jeans, but since having kids they are so much more uncomfortable around the belly (even if technically speaking my belly has slimmed down, but it will never be the same again i think) and all i want to wear is dresses… the dresses I own are better suited for summer so I’m actively looking for the perfect kind of dress to wear in the winter. Perfect timing for your article:)

  • I live in New England where it can be very cold and as an experiment I wore only dresses for a whole year. I could stay warm and cozy in winter by layering on a tank top, full slip, turtleneck jersey, my dress, and then a cardigan. I would wear either tights or fleece-lined leggings with socks under it all, and knee-high boots if wanted extra warmth compared to shoes or booties.

  • A tipp, if you are living on a budget and still want to wear high quality clothes and shoes etc.: I find high qualitiy items and/or designer clothes as well as shoes and accessoires at the thrift shop/ salvation army or the good will. Three days ago I found a very high quality pair of brown winter boots, (leather) fully lined with sheep fleece. I payed 10 Euro for them. I had to get them resoled, because the soles were very slippery and harsh. The new soles, made by a professional shoemaker cost me 38 Euro. Alltogether I have a almost new pair of high quality boots now for the price of 48 Euro! ๐Ÿ™‚ If I would`ve bought them brand new, I would`ve probably spend almost 200 Euro on them. ๐Ÿ™‚ Ebay is also a good option for high qualitiy items, if you don`t mind that they are used. But it is definately a start for getting ones wardrobe chic on a smaller budget and built up from there. ๐Ÿ™‚ P.S. I never buy animal products that are new, only used ones. It is a way of reducing animal cruelty. If I purchase new items I always look that they are vegan and animal friendly. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • I typically would start with a base of leggings & a long sleeve T-shirt. Then layer a dress over with a sweater or cardigan over that. Then boots, socks, hat, gloves, and scarf. If I’m hot in the house…usually the socks come off & the cardigan/sweater. But we tend to keep our house at 65 year round.

  • ps totally unrelated to today’s article but yesterday I drove past a church where a funeral was being held and saw several people wearing thongs (ie flip flops or jandals) on their feet !! I live in subtropical Australia where heat and humidity are high but geez – I nearly drove off the road when I saw the footwear. For a moment I wondered if perhaps we should be nominating a dress code for funerals, as we do for weddings.

  • How to wear dresses in 3 degree weather (and snow): take your favorite dress, put in on the hanger and put on pants. 😂 I attempted fleece lined tights and it was a major fail. I avoid layers because they make me feel claustrophobic, so I have high standards for the clothing I choose to wear. I hate wearing pants for the same reason (constricting and minimal range of movement) but if I’m wearing tights or leggings under a dress I may as well just put on some dang pants. Women in history did wear dresses in the winter but they were still cold! Why else did they sleep in one room, in one bed? Sometimes I really don’t feel like wearing pants and I will wear a knee length dress without tights or boots, paired with a coat and suck it up.

  • Oh my, those pink velvet boots are amazing!!! 👢🌸😱😍 My favourite print for the puff sleeve dress was the grey and white one because it reminds me the most of French provincial wallpaper #cottagecore!!! 🥐🥰 When it comes to winter tips; the key for me is thermals/heat tech as my base layer (especially for tights) and layering, in general, to help with the constant changes from the freezing cold outside to the overly warm insides. โ˜บ💕
