The Air Force has specific guidelines for wearing the mess dress uniform, which includes dark blue or black socks to match the trousers and jacket. The Air Force Dress and Appearance Program website provides information on wear of the uniform, insignias, awards, and decorations. The policy authorizes female wear of mess dress trousers or slacks, wear of caps for baldness or hair loss due to medical conditions, permanent wear of the EPME badge, and security.

As an interim solution, women are authorized to immediately purchase and alter men’s mess dress trousers until they are available for purchase in approximately 18-24 months. Alterations for women opting to wear the men’s mess dress trousers will be provided by the Army and Air Force Exchange Service.

The US Army Mess Dress Uniform is a symbol of pride, honor, and tradition worn by soldiers on formal occasions such as military balls, weddings, and dining-ins. It features a black jacket with satin lapels adorned with brass buttons bearing the eagle emblem of the United States, while the pants are made of matching material.

Miniature medals are worn on the blue mess dress or on formal dress, centered between lapel and arm seam and midway. Possession of the Mess Dress Uniform is mandatory for Officers, but it is an optional uniform for Enlisted personnel. Can you wear Air Force mess dress to a wedding?

A relative of a deceased Service/ex-Service person may wear the medals on the right breast. One group of medals should be worn by each person. The same rules apply to women, who wear their medals below the bar. Women who have been awarded medals that normally fit on the medal bar wear them in the normal men’s method with straight ribbons. A woman with a CBE or a CBE and Golden Jubilee Medal will always wear her CBE on bow and tails on her left side and her Jubilee Medal from a bow.
