How To Wear Black Dress To Wedding?

Black is generally acceptable for a female to wear a black dress to a wedding, as the hue is versatile and can be worn in various ways. However, guests should adhere to the dress code on the invitation, as it may be stated on the invitation. Bridal stylist Julie Sabatino of The Stylish Bride suggests that black is a great staple option that can be reworn.

For a European wedding, wearing black is considered a faux, but solid or jewel tones are the best colors to wear. For a black-tie event, solid or jewel tones are the best colors. For beach weddings, wearing a bright, colorful dress with sequins or jewels can add extra excitement to the wedding day.

Black wedding dresses present the bride as a bold, resilient, and sophisticated woman worthy of respect, especially from her groom. Daytime weddings are more casual, so lighter fabrics, festive colors, and less-formal attire are the rule. For women, a nice daytime dress, skirt, top, or jumpsuit are good choices, while men should wear a well-tailored suit in a mid-to-dark neutral color like gray, blue, or charcoal.

For bridesmaid dresses, go with shades and styles of black outfits, such as jumpsuits, criss-cross back, and front bootlegs, or simple dresses made from crepe, silk, lace, or satin fabrics. To spice up your ensemble, choose colorful, sparkly, printed shoes or other statement pieces.

In summary, black is acceptable for a female to wear a black dress to a wedding, but the key is in the styling to avoid looking like you dressed for a funeral.

How do I ask guests to wear black to a wedding?

Be upfront. Tell your guests what to wear. Tell them on the invitation or save-the-date. This gives guests time to find an appropriate outfit or to say they can’t follow it. Write it next to the dress code. For example: “Formal attire requested.” Wear blue. Be clear and concise. If you’re asking guests to wear a certain color, be clear and concise. If you want them to stay within a certain color palette, list the colors and provide a picture! If you don’t want guests to look like bridesmaids, say so.

Give options. Some guests may feel limited by a specific color request, so leave room for them to find something appropriate. If you want all guests to wear black, that’s fine. But asking everyone to wear a bright yellow is harder. A better request would be “shades of blue,” “soft pastels,” or “burgundy, black, or gold.” This gives guests more options.

Who can wear black to a wedding?

Don’t worry about being disrespectful in the 21st century. “It’s fine to wear black to a wedding,” says wedding planner Matthew Oliver. If you’re not sure, most invitations will say what to wear. A black tux and white shirt are always good.

“Wearing black to a summer wedding is fine, but darker shades can retain heat,” says Harris. “You don’t want to feel hot under the collar.” You might also want to explore other materials. If the ceremony, breakfast, or reception is held outdoors in sunny weather, look for lightweight fabrics. It’s usually fine to wear black to a wedding. But there are times when it’s not allowed. Even if you’ve been saving that suit for a special occasion, it’s not always appropriate. “It’s important to pay attention to the dress code,” says Oliver. If they’re wearing black or say you shouldn’t wear black, don’t wear black. “It’s that simple.”

How to dress up a black dress?

Maybe you want to add color to your wardrobe. White, pastel, or bold sunglasses look great with a black dress.

The same goes for adding prints and patterns to your outfit. Wearing frames with tortoiseshell, polka dots, wood grain, or floral patterns adds a playful touch.

Mood is another thing to think about when choosing sunglasses for a little black dress. For a bohemian look at an outdoor wedding in the woods, choose oversized round lenses with tinted frames. For a sporty look on the boardwalk, get an excellent pair of shield frames.

Black Dress Accessories. You can wear different black dress accessories on different days. It’s all about trial and error when styling a black dress. Keep in mind the attitude you want to convey.

  • Love this breakdown! In general I like the idea behind this article – you’re kind of explaining fashion rules. It could be fun to hear your take on other fashion rules and which ones we should bend or break. For example, I always heard the rule that you shouldn’t mix brown and black — like why?! Was that just some editor put in Cosmo in 2005 and it stuck? This ‘rule’ makes me scared to mix them, but I see you do it and it looks great obviously. So could be fun to see more articles around bending or breaking the “rules” of fashion, or even a “myth busters” type article. Just a fun idea!

  • Quite an interesting article. Never easy to choose the right outfit because for me the one thing i would say is to feel comfortable 🙏 sometimes you see guests who can barely walk with heels, who can barely seat in their too tight dresses, who keep pulling their dresses or they are “bustiers”(sorry don’t know the English word. ..maybe strapless dress?”. You did quite a job with the info box 🙏🙏🙏 love from France ❤

  • You shouldn’t wear red at Hungarian weddings either! After midnight the bride wears a (usually short) red dress. This symbolizes that a girl has become a woman:) And wearing black at a Hungarian wedding is absolutely inappropriate, because it is the colour of mourning. But as far as I know, this is the case in most European countries

  • I really liked the dress that had the ties at the top of the shoulders but I also love the first dress because it’s such a classic. The Calla shoes look fabulous, especially the heels. I think I may buy a pair of the flats for my mom for Christmas. Thanks for introducing them to us…I’m sure bunions are in my future too.

  • Hi Frederique. Thankyou for showing us your black dresses. I love all of them. Xx In fact i think i like the black linen shirt dress more than the white one!! I don’t have bunions thank God but i think those strappy black heels are as lovely and as chic as any pair of fashion shoes. I can’t decide which dress i like the most. Your choices are fabulous and so chic and timeless. Enjoy. Lots of love Beverley xx

  • OMG I can’t choose, they’re all fantastique!!! ❤️❤️❤️ I especially love the one shoulder dress, and the girlie Italian-feeling one. 👍🏻 I have 4 black dresses – 1 formal, 1 party, 1 summer/flowy, and 1 t-shirt dress. I still want a black sweater dress, and a black shirt dress! I could wear black every day, it’s kind of a disease. But i don’t want to get well. 😂

  • You are so funny 😂 I have 1 black dress, it’s a stretch fit and flare with a scoop neck and long sleeves. I love it and I wear it a lot. It goes with heels (if I wore them lol ) boots and ballet flats. I can throw a long black cardigan over it if it’s cold or a light weight trench on not so cold days. It’s extremely versatile 🙏🏻

  • I love my simple sleeveless V-neck black linen dress. It is great for any occasion when the weather is hot, and can be dressed up or down. I had to go to a family funeral in August several years ago and had to wear medium-blue, the darkest color in my wardrobe then, and the dress was way too hot for the 40C weather, too. So, I didn’t want to be caught in that spot again, but I love this dress for casual wear, too. Black doesn’t look good with my complexion, so I often wear it with my black dots on white neck scarf to brighten it up around my face, or with my black and white cotton blazer.

  • I loved all the dresses 👗💕 Wish I lived Australia as it would be super easy to add pockets to the dress you refer to as the ‘romantic dress’ 😁 I have some beautiful favourite dresses that sadly don’t have pockets, so I’m using my current unemployment to add pockets to them all😁, while I job hunt and care for family. Love your happy articles! Well done 👍😁

  • Certainly you look very well in black so all these dresses are a beautiful choice. Of course you are slim and have a super tan and that helps you (together with your CC pearls ) look terrific. Regarding Calla shoes let me tell you that I have a pair of white moccasins with gold trim. They are quite old but extremely comfy.

  • Warm greetings from Slovakia. I have started to watch your articles since quarantine in March and you always cheer me up. Love you, love your articles, love your sense of humour. Thank you and please carry on. PS:You look more and more beautiful. Please, could you make the article about your everyday make up routine I would really appreciate it. Thank you and stay safe.

  • Such a beautifully cut dress in your opening. And isn’t a properly done lining just the best for wearing well. I like that those shoes don’t have a skinny heel or toes. The curved toe and the slightly thicker than spikey heels is often more feminine. And this dress is very feminine. Ah, here comes the Audrey Hepburn look from “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” Does Oscar know about your love of black and that had he been a ginger he might not have found his happy home with you? LOL. Speaking of linen, I saw a beautifully designed holiday table recently with a linen tablecloth that was unironed, still softly wrinkled and it looked perfect. Linen is exquisite, but can be hard to wear in heat and humidity. Your simple-lined holiday summer dress is just gorgeous and perfect for the holidays where you live presently and you want to remain fresh-looking. The black almost-a-shirt-dress is great for its versatility from work to shopping to an early drink and supper with a friend. The longer beach dress with the ties at the shoulders and the lace near the hem is wonderful and quite suitable to occasions in the backyard or on a beach or other outdoor event. The single-shouldered, sparkly Zara dress is a stunner, too.

  • I just love how much you adore Oscar❤️, & your all glamour & then Oscar is making those snoring sounds 😊😆😅😂🤣 The “Bling Bling Dress” looks great without the bow belt, when a design is at an angle ( sequins ) they flatter the figure well even if the wearer is not super skinny. It is a dress to show off curves. A request for a article about styling hair using “Classic” eg Chignon etc… & the use of hair accessories. 🤍🙋‍♀️

  • Frederique, I am trying to go thought my closet, I have a lot of clothes…some I have not worn in the last year or two..I need to clean out and keep the things I really like, that fit me right etc…I am having a hard time deciding what stays and what goes..any tips on how to organize a closet would be greatly appreciated..Kasia

  • I’ve never loved black clothes…ever…But, since I learned from you dear Frédérique, I’ve been reevaluating this complex color….After all, black is the most colorful color…it makes up all the most color that exists in the world (science supports) 😀 …so, my favourite black dress are the 1st The corporate dress….and the 2nd The linen dress shirt….and now as I think so…I finally realized that I like all of them ;D ;D ;D

  • Honestly, anything with Oscar as an accessory suits me! Honestly as much as I love the corporate look with your little black dress I think I prefer that beautiful holiday dress! I wish I had that type of dress on some of my holidays with my husband before we married (in my late 40’s and early 50’s – 2nd marriage). Great look for a woman of great style!

  • Once again, love your articles Frédérique, you have inspired me to make an effort, to wear more feminine clothes, instead of just jeans, t-shirt and sneakers. I’m curious, being that you’ve lost a lot of weight now, what does this dress look like on you now, Aug 2021, also, can this dress be worn on the reverse side? (polka dots on outside)

  • Love your black dresses, in particular the first and last ones. Over three years ago when I retired from office life, I started reducing my wardrobe getting rid of business dresses and skirts and adding a “little black dress” for cruises. I really miss traveling internationally and in particular cruising. My question is why you don’t show more of your legs off? Is a low hem line what is in style or is it just a personal preference? I’m 58 but I still like to show off my legs.

  • My Lace Black Dress.. Courtesy of H&M… A Classic Cut.. High Neck. Fabulous Sleeves, just above the knee.. Black Tights. Fabulous Black Leather Ankle Boots…. Courtesy of my faaaaaavourite Shop….. ZARA… My Vintage Black Clutch with a Large Skull Clasp. Simple Jewellery. Men’s Silver Fossil Watch.. Silver Bulgari Stack Ring.. Silver Block Earrings. Red Lipstick ( Always 💋) Mascara and Defined Brows… And finally….. Chanel No 5

  • OMG, Frederique you are so adorable and funny. I love your snoring bulldog, what a cutie. He would make me laugh all day. BTW, you look like Carl Largerfield in your pearls and cigarette. I love all your black dresses. The tie dress from Shein is cute, I use to have something like that in my 20’s. I feel the same way about missing traveling and going out socializing. Hang in there. 🙂

  • all your dresses are fabulous, the first one, oh i love the neckline, the causal summer (tank) one is so cute, i like how it’s flowy, it looks great on you. the sparkly one ohhhh! it is very beautiful and you look gorgeous. I like the casual one the best but I would, if I was as skinny as you, wear the first one too, I didn’t like the shirt dress that much for me, it would look frumpy on me, on you, it’s cute and casual but on me, not so much.

  • I always had wide toes (Medium, or C width), but since I broke the outer toes on one foot a year ago, there are some pairs I can’t fit anymore, they healed crooked, despite my efforts. I’ll check out Calla, it’s so hard to find shoes with enough room in the toe box. Most shoes are designed for A width, they say B, but measure A, they skimp on leather.

  • “I don’t want to show my boobs” but I am 😅 . “These are so comfortable you can go crazy shopping in them!” But I don’t recommend 😂 I LOVE the dress you bought in Bali 💕 so so nice to wear! These kind of style I find really good as it narrows my shoulders ( I have Scandinavian heritage 🇩🇰 ) this is a beautiful dress, you look great in it Frederique 💖

  • Teasing you a little.. : Black is not a Color as Well as White is not a Color. Black is defined as darkness and White is defined Light . As these makes colors eigther lighter or darker .. 😊 but for you the Black is beautifull, for others they need really a lot of makeup, scarf or jewellery to give glow to the face 🙂

  • Believe it or not Target (US) has plain, solid color, including black, knee length or maxi length T-shirt dresses for $20 (US) bucks. Universal Thread is the brand. They literally pair with anything and are seasonably versatile with layers (spring, summer, autumn, a bit thin during a cold winter). For fast fashion, it’s good quality, and nobody needs to know it’s from the TarJay Boutique.

  • I’m still reeling from the fantastic fashion show. Every black dress was more stylish and beautiful than the next. U looked stunning and very sexy in all of them. They all looked a million dollars. The black shoes are sexy enough! The finale with the sequined off the shoulder was out of this world. Besides the pearls Oscar is your best accessory. Luved this fantastic article. Thank you

  • This first dress is sooo flattering on you! Love the neckline. The last, sparkly one, Oooh la la! Sexy!! I love how you style each dress. Can I ask if you could do a article on Australian fashion? What is worn there? Who are the famous designers and popular stores you love and shop at? Do they ship to the US? Merci Merci!!

  • All your black dress yourself to suit you if no matter what you do with yourself but you’re very up and down whatever jacket on jacket off you look very nice in all of them but you make me laugh but I am for you because you’ve got the weather there nice and warm I’m going to wear a coat umbrella with you all to come back and get me a nice black dress on only going out it rains ruined last time we went out of court with lockdown we have been out since it started for a night out we used to go to rock ‘n’ rollI can’t go now because you’re so shut up shop sometimes I wear that address at the dance sometimes I put rock ‘n’ roll girl that’s your work you know everything underskirt and everything and a scarf and heels thank you you make me laugh

  • Do you want wide fitting shoes ordinary shoes pinch it all the time not wide fitting I know God will give you bunions not good where are youse all the time I could go away with Paula boots for those that make sure the word fit in ok Thank you love boots they’re sorry ankle boots I’ve put Paula there sorry
