Does dry erase work on mirrors?
Dry erase markers work well on non-porous surfaces like mirrors, metals, and glass. The ink in dry erase markers is similar to the ink in permanent markers and can stain porous surfaces. The ink is made of color pigments, a chemical solvent, and a polymer. Dry erase markers use a different kind of polymer than permanent markers. Permanent markers use an acrylic polymer to stick to surfaces, while dry erase markers use an oily silicone polymer. The silicone polymer makes dry erase marker ink slippery, so the colored pigment doesn’t come in direct contact with the surface. Dry erase markers can be wiped off non-porous surfaces easily. The solvent in the marker dries the ink quickly, so it doesn’t absorb into the surface. Dry ink is easiest to wipe off. Dry erase whiteboards have a slight static charge, which helps the pigment stick to the surface. Whiteboards can hold onto some of the pigment, creating a ghosted or streaked look after too many uses. Many people are turning to glass whiteboards, which are stronger. Glass works well with dry erase markers because it’s non-porous. You can back-paint it any color or leave it clear for a stylish look. It never stains or gets ghosted by the markers.
