Is A Black Wedding Dress Appropriate For The Bride?

Black is an acceptable color for a female to wear to a wedding, as it is versatile and suitable for various occasions. However, guests should keep in mind that wearing black to a wedding may be considered bad luck due to its association with death and darkness.

In Emily Post’s Wedding Etiquette, authors Anna and Lizzie Post write that virtually all colors are acceptable, including black. However, an all-black look is more suited to some weddings than others based on factors like location, time, or dress code.

As long as it is not considered culturally inappropriate or against the dress code, you can wear black to a wedding. However, depending on where the couple is exchanging vows, wearing a black dress to a wedding may be considered bad luck.

To choose the right black dress for an afternoon wedding, consider the fabric, such as lightweight fabric like chiffon or silk. Black is a classic and elegant color often chosen for formal events, so it would be appropriate to wear a black gown or tuxedo to a black-tie wedding. However, if the dress code is specified as semi-formal or cocktail attire, it may be more appropriate.

Black wedding dresses are no longer a faux pas at weddings, as they are now widely accepted in many circles. The color can be more flattering and practical, especially for those spending a lot on a dress. Black clothing creates a striking contrast against skin tones, and it symbolizes elegance, formality, modernity, and elite stature.

In 16th century Roman Catholic Spain, brides would wear black wedding dresses to declare their love and loyalty to their husbands until death. Although brides are commonly choosing a black gown for fall and winter weddings, McKeever said that a black wedding dress can be a timeless year-round choice.

  • For someone who wanted to think “out of the box” and get a black dress, why the heck did she put herself in the epitome of bridal salons that is flush with white dresses? Talk about putting yourself smack dab in the middle of the box! She should’ve gone to someplace other than a bridal salon. I’m glad she found something she liked though!

  • I DO respect Randy and Camille for being honest with the bride about the limited options they have for black gowns, and tried to make the one dress that WAS in her budget work for her, rather than try to sell her a black gown that was way out of her budget. And the bride looked stunning in what they came up with.

  • I love how scandalized they seem that someone would want a dress that isn’t white. White wasn’t even “traditional” in western culture until Queen Victoria wore a white dress and many cultures around the world prefer a dress with color. I know this was filmed years ago so taste and fashions have changed a lot.

  • They should have said “we have black dresses, but they are out of your price range you stated. Would you like to up your price point and try one on, or another venue. I feel like they forced her into that style of dress. That’s sad because if I ever…my dress WILL BE BLACK!!! 💯 AND MY CONSULTANT BETTER NOT BRING ME ANY DRESS IN ANY COLOR BUT BLACK.

  • Great content, thanks for sharing. My relationship of 5 years ended a month ago. The love of my life decided to leave me, Really love her so much, i can’t stop thinking about her. I’ve tried my very best to get her back in my life but to no avail, I’m frustrated because i literally can’t envision my life with anyone else. I’ve done my best to get rid of the thoughts of her but I can’t, I don’t know why I’m saying this here, I really miss her and just can’t stop thinking about her.

  • Ahw she was so nice n easygoing despite them ripping her off badly n not even giving her what she wanted. She def caved in due to pressure. This specific red tone clashes with her skintone a lot. All the dresses they showed her were extremely basic designs, no unique details at all. Not sure how they could straight up low to all of us n describe those dresses as “different”…

  • I do see a shift happening with women wanting colored wedding dresses. Wedding dresses weren’t always white but the large majority of wedding dresses are of course white so I’d probably shop somewhere else if I was wanting a colored wedding dress but maybe the wedding dress industry will change with time to have a wider variety of colors.

  • I paid for my own dress and had what i had my heart set . I didn’t ask anyone if i was allowed to do this . My wedding my way . Told my mother in law NO black Carried a bible for my mother ..but no one was religious……don’t understand that ..The reading of the bands … The what …. Minister forgot my name …My marriage ended two years in ..Should have been on the honeymoon when he told some ramand girl her hair was nice …Me WTF ..That was a wake up call ..Went back to him had a son, then bankrupted the ………………….

  • This lady’s lip-liner actually looks like a pencil thin mustache as the lip stick starts to wear off. I still remember the horror of a makeup job the gal had on that helped me find the perfect ring for my husband. I actually returned the ring and finally found something I liked even better from another store. I just didn’t want that awkward memory associated with our rings.

  • Go have your dress custom made or go buy a dress at a non-bridal shop when you want unique. (Its def less pricy than Kleinfeld as well) its that simple guys. Why are women obsessed with going to bridal shops even when they DONT want traditional bridal looks? Im getting married for the 3rd time now and all 3 times my dresses are specifically made or bought elsewhere as i LOVE unique dresses and its at a fraction of the cost . This time im goinf black aswell. But also why doesnt kleinfeld have options. Theyre supposed to be so big. Like broaded yourselfs Kleinfeld. Lol
