Absolutely loved Crete! Seeing your b roll footage brought back so many memories!!! I went just before tourist season and it was gorgeous, not busy at all but most of the shops were open! There is some really good hiking as well as beaches. The buses were very easy to use, I just picked up a pass from the convenience store.
So great seeing you on Crete and Chania. Brings back a lot of memories. I have been there almost every year the last 5-6 year at least, last time in end of may when celebrating my birthday there. I recognize many of the places on the article, even saw on table at a restaurant we sat on last time. I really like it there, obviously and agree with you on many things. For me it is holiday to just walk “downtown” in around the harbour in Chania and enjoying a Mythos or the local drought. Or just laying on the beach and enjoy a good lunch. You are right about the prizes, even the tourist prices at the harbor in Chania are low compared to other places. I recommend to stay in Nea Chora. It is just 15-20 minutes walk from the center of Chania, but it is still a come area. I especially recommend hotel Klinakis. It is run by two lovely sisters. Tell them I said hello 🙂 I have been there often in the end of may/beginning of June, or late August. Then the prices are lower, but still warm temperatures.

Thanks so much I travel a lot or used to pre Covid and this is actually an extremely well done and informative travel article. I’m considering going to either Crete or Ukraine for surrogacy around April-May so it was helpful to hear about off season as well. THere are a lot of Greeks in Australia so I have loved the Greek food and people for so long and even though it was only a couple of days that I visited in 2016 I fell in love with it. I always say I must’ve had some great Greek past lives! My husband hated his visit there 20+ years ago because his ex wife drank too much and picked a horrible motel that he refused to stay in PLUS he had an abscess and required root canal in a public hospital in Crete. Anyway thanks again and thanks for making it so much easier for me to show this article to my husband so he will agree to go to Crete instead of Kiev or Odessa.

If you like adventure to south crete and in the mountain parts of crete the villages, there are forests, gorges to hike mountains there are villages in crete that have at least 1 meter of snow for a few days every year it is not only sun. And in the south it is like going to north africa there are wild and rough beaches lot of wind in july august september and 40 degrees unders shade

I’m planning a trip in July with my fiancé and we plan to fly into Heraklion then head west; going to Rethymno, Chania, Kissamos (all spending about 2-3 nights each place). We have about 4 days left and I was thinking staying in Elafonisi area, or staying a bit north of that so were closer to Chania when we fly out, we could also go back to Chania and stay there again. What are your thoughts on that idea?
I really like Crete, driving there is a little bit different, the locals drive crazy, I even seen a car with no hood or doors in Heraklion that must have been getting driven to the junk yard to be scrapped. The brand new highway (up above the old highway) that they just built is good,the roads in the towns and in Heraklion are very narrow with motorcycles and mopeds/scooters parked up either side, even in a little Nissan micra hire car it gets tight at times.. I found that there are a lot of old beater cars and pickups that the locals keep at seasonal places like stalida where they board the whole town up for winter and leave the old cars there for the next summer, the first 2 weeks of each summer are spent pressure washing the dust off of everything and painting things to freshen them up.. There are lots of stray/feral cats there, they are all friendly and are such a big thing that they are even on the postcards.

hi you missed the most beautiful place on the island of crete paleohora, its south west part of the island right on the Libyan sea, its a stunning village which has a twoand a half hour transfer from the airport but my goodness when you arrive its stunning, the streets are closed at tea time to traffic and all the tables and chairs fill the streets children are alloed to play safely, music softly playing in the background with the sea lapping its truly beautiful, at dusk the mountains turn a soft red against the turquoise waters, boats arriving from the whale and dolphin perusal sight seers, it comes alive, the old ferry docks from its days service, docking next to the dolphin boats, children swimming around the the ferry without fear, as everyone looks after everyones children its such a unique place that what brings us back, the people, they are so special so welcoming, this little place is unlike any other i have visited before . a truly beautiful spot of crete . my regards liz .

Recently spent 3 wks in Crete, mainly hiking. That was very enjoyable, but my personal “thing to hate” was the rubbish being dumped over the edge of the road. It seems acceptable to stop at any suitable corner (usually with a bit of a drop off) and unload your vehicle. I asked some Greeks about this and twice was told, “it’s tourists.” Yeah … all those Germans and Brits travelling to Crete with their old tyres, mattresses, and plastic chairs to dump roadside!
funny story about having an international driving license in greece from the US- i have a cousin who lives and works in istanbul at the moment and i went to go visit her. we booked a weekend at the closest greek island and we decided we would just drive over from istanbul. she has a turkish drivers license and a car, but she rarely ever drives so the plan was for me to drive her car. i thought greece was like any other country which does not require a international permit so i didnt think anything of it until the night before we were going. i decided to double check and i learned i needed the permit!! oopsssss!!! we decided to go anyway and see what would happen, and the border agent said they would NOT let me drive the car into greece so we thought all hope was lost. luckily, on the turkish side, they have a service where someone with a turkish license can pay a fee and have their license turned into an international one. so she ended up having to drive in and it caused us a few hours of STRESS!! but now i know for next time. wish this article was around back in july hahahaha

There is a 2nd floor terrace restaurant on the way to/out of the “pink beach” on the southwest area of the island. Wife and I had two dishes. We both got super sick the next hour. We felt the dish was a day old. And should not have eaten it. We were the only ones eating there. Red flag. Being food & water with you if you hit up that beach because it’s pretty sparse on the road there.
I found the weather in Crete is not great. I was just a few day a go in September 2023 and it was from 27-34 C and that was far too hot for me so I had yo hide in my room all day with the AC on until around 6 pm when I venture out. Driving in Crete is very easy and safe. I had no issues driving around, all you have to do is not too rush anywhere, leave the local drivers to by pass you on the road and motorways, other than that I found it to be very easy. Food is great, prices are great, they can be friendly because they need your money . All in all I loved this island but I will come back in a season when is less hot like October or November, less tourists even cheaper prices than high season and you have the place to yourself rather than rubbing shoulders with a million other tourists.😁
Mark, driving in Crete cities 0:55 couldn’t have been THAT hair-raising. Have you looked in the mirror lately 🙂 I’ve only been perusal you for a month but your advice is spot on in the 40 vids I have seen so far, for every single location, and it is gratifying to see locals chime in with confirmation. In the US, we joke that the best theft deterrent for a car is to have manual transmission. I have one and commonly leave my window rolled down and the key in the ignition and I have had it for 20 years! (Touch wood)
Love Crete and this is a fantastic introduction. Word of caution though, if you’re into archeology and historical sites, and especially if you’ve visited a few in your life, Knossos is really underwhelming. I was warned about this from another historian friend so it wasn’t that shocking, and of course you’re not not going to go, but be warned. On the one hand there’s Evans’ crazy reconstructions that are just bizarre for our times (that itself is an attraction of course, but not in a good way, at least for me). Then it’s so closed off you can’t really explore around freely which is one of the magical aspects of other sites, big or small, famous or lesser known, to be able to wander off and imagine the place thousands of years ago. Also, be careful with tour guides, I heard several that were saying completely wrong things that have been revised for many years now, about the Minoans and Knossos, I was also shocked with this. I’m not sure if they really weren’t up to date with modern studies or if they just said what they thought tourists want to hear but it was terrible.
I found it hotter in Crete than anywhere I have been. The weather was 42 when we visited late June into July. It was unbearable to sit in relaxing, to exhausting to even walk about. As a pasty white Brit be prepared and be sensible. Edited to say it is well worth a visit and it is absolutely beautiful and the beaches are the best we have visited.

Okay so this guys starts off the review on massive negatives. However I think his negatives are only applicable to his American audience – for example: the driving on Crete is crazy, small roads etc Rest of World: pretty normal American: You need to show your driving license. Rest of World. Yeah we all drive stick here normally – why wouldn’t you? Only in America do more people drive autos than manuals. We can do both. It’s a non-issue I feel like writing up a Project Register to reflect the issues appropriately to show the American view versus rest of world. I love Americans though, crazy lovely people. And they gave us McDonalds so thumbs up from me, love a Big Mac!!!
Don’t put toilet paper down toilet put it in bin next to toilet, this is because the sewage pipes are too narrow and it will end up flooding the area with said sewage. Don’t be embarrassed to do this it’s normal to them, oh and there are places that are holes in the ground take wipes with you as you never know.
Greece and the Greeks are the best……but……Beware of Islands where the British laid the sewage pipes. You find a sign in the toilets not to put anything down it, not even toilet paper. This is because we Brits laid down overly narrow gauge pipes. There is a plastic bag provided to put the used toilet paper in. I just wasn’t comfortable with that, so I got round it by cleansing my bott in the shower, then cleansing the shower. This led to the hotel owner wondering understandably, why the bag never had anything in it and if I was risking bunging up the pipes. I confessed what I was doing and she couldn’t stop laughing. Like I said, the Greeks are great……We’re the crazies. Mark is right about the sun. It’s like Florida in the sense that you can burn in less than an hour.
Me and my boyfriend spent 2 weeks on the Island, so we had the chance to visit many places. I have to admit that Crete is an island full of natural wonders, however, we felt like local people were seeing us just like a walking wallet.\r \r Cretan people are nice just in the places where they’re forced to be nice, like restaurants or travel agencies, however when you interact with them in less touristy places, they are very rude and obnoxious.\r \r Almost nobody on this island respects the driving rules, they don’t give you the permission to cross the street even if you are on the pedestrian crossing. Google maps doesn’t give you the proper directions most of the time, and the public transportation is almost non existent. Their bus site doesn’t work and you cannot find any schedule.\r \r *Fun fact* \r I was in a clothing shop asking the sales lady if she has the S size for a t-shirt, she didn’t have it, instead she tried to convince me that the t-shirt sizes starts from M :)). I found this situation sad and funny at the same time. They literally tell you lies just to convince you to buy. It was a Jack&Jones store in Chania.
Public transportation is not good unless you speak Greek. Cretan people, in general, are only hospitable superficially. Often if you’re not a native you pay more for the same thing a Cretan orders. Don’t think that you can integrate into their culture even if you learn to speak Greek. They pay women less than men. Walkability is not good as sidewalks and crosswalks are poor. Cretans are habitually 45 minutes late if they show up at all. However, dancing and music are good points.
Great article and I’m here now following some of your recommendations. Yesterday we did a round trip from our base in Bali to Knossos Palace, Sisi Harbour, Spinalonga and a little further to Agios Nikolaos. We found your Fredo Cappuccino cafe, the same lady was there and she was nicely surprised to see herself in your article when I showed her! They do great ice cream too with real fruit bits and yes the Fredo is nice.
We’re going to try to get there in the next few weeks. This is one of the best articles I have ever seen an American make. We plan to see The old Olympic Stadium and Temple of Haephestus in Monastiraki area. We always forget about it. We also plan Acrocorinth. We did enjoy Kerameikos the last time in 2019. Mystras is very interesting and we ended up meeting a Nun there pulling a mule, usually they offer you something. Very nice!
My kids wife and I have this on our radar for next year. I have a some friends/soccer parents who are from Greece who are convincing me to go and I have decided this to be our next location. Is there a lot of walking as I already like how this looks like a nice backpacking type of journey. Different than the all inclusive vacations we do.
Greece is beautiful. I grew up in Israel and Greece is very popular for us to visit. My niece has just came back from a visit there with husband and friends. Food is fantastic and music is great. Just one comment: Please don’t put music when you talk in the article, since it is really difficult to understand what you say and people want to hear what you say and not listen to music. It is a mistake done by many and only God knows why. Thank you again for your great work.
Crete is just the best Greek Island, other ones are more famous and expensive for the hype, but at least that you are into hard partying or ur gay I really think that Crete surpasses every Island in a lot of things, and being the bigger one means that you wouldn’t get bored never cuz there is always something to see or do, unlike in the small ones like Mykonos or Santorini.
Although I appreciate sharing your adventures. That’s all you did you didn’t give us places of where you went to eat or where to get the best freddo. I understand not sharing the places you went on the food tour but give us the restaurants and taverns you went to otherwise. Beaches and tourist locations we can find on a map but it’s hard to sift through the good places to eat or get good service at. I’m very frustrated that you would not share those wonderful places you went to! And that explains my thumbs down.
