Is Dating Before Marriage Haram?

Islamic scholars believe that dating before marriage is considered haram in Islam, as it goes against the principle of seeking a spouse for the purpose of marriage. This includes romantic, intimate relationships such as hugging, kissing, hand-holding, and sex. In Islam, there is no set age where individuals are considered old enough to start dating, and dating is not permissible.

Islam teaches that marriage is the finest, purest, and permissible relationship between a male and female. There is no room for illicit affairs or the concept of boyfriend and girlfriend. Courtship is allowed, but there is no dating or living in de facto relationships. Kissing before marriage is considered haram in the eyes of Shariah.

In the realm of dating, this could mean spending time with a potential spouse in a way that aligns with Islamic teachings, such as in the presence of a chaperone, avoiding physical intimacy, and having the pure intention of marriage. On the flip side, haram actions in dating would include casual relationships with no intention of marriage.

Islam does permit dating with the end goal of marriage in mind, but a relationship entered into solely for pleasure is considered haram and should be avoided. Contrary to popular beliefs, it is completely permissible to see the girl/boy before marriage, and it is considered good.

Choosing a life partner in Islam is also forbidden, as it is considered haraam to marry a zaaniyah unless she repents or a zaani unless he repents. Marrying someone you love is not Islamically wrong, but it is considered unlawful sexual intercourse and could be a marriage without parents’ blessing.

What is a halal hug?

It is halal to hug your partner during the day during Ramadan if you can control yourself. But if you want to have sex, it is sinful. A hug is a form of affection in which two or more people hold each other close. If more than two people are involved, it’s a group hug. The word’s origins are unknown, but two theories exist. The verb “hug” (first used in the 1560s) might be related to the Old Norse word “hugga,” which meant to comfort. The second idea is that the word comes from the German word hegen, which means to care for. It originally meant to enclose with a hedge.

  • Me and my partner have been together before we’ve practiced Islam, we live together and when we decided to both practice Islam and get closer to allah, we decided to give up our relationship but we’re still “together” but not together, we’re both keeping our distance and started working more (as specially him since he’s been looking for a job but it’s been difficult) in order for us to have a halal relationship/marriage, I’m Kurdish, he’s Nigerian, he’s so humble and he loves and fears allah, only problem is my mum isn’t happy about us because she doesn’t like the fact that he’s black, my dad and brother are happy with him, but my mum is hesitant when I mentioned that I like him and I want to marry him in the future when allah SWT inshallah allows it

  • I am in my 11th year of marriage(10 years and 5months ) and the last five months was the most testing time for me. And this article solved my problem just like that in 21 minutes. Alhamdulilaah ( the most helpful, hopeful, reassuring article i have ever seen on this topic) the other marriage problem related articles have made me sader than i was at the time of listening. they added my heartbreak into more heartbreaks. jazakumul Allahu khayran for your clear explanation made me see my faults and their solutions.

  • 4:05 As a Muslimah, I wanna make clear that just because someone isn’t attracted to you, doesn’t mean you’re unattractive to everyone. It just means that person isn’t created to be with you, so Allah is cancelling/blocking a terrible marriage. Definitely a blessing, in disguise. “We have created humans, in the best form”. Surah At tin 95:4

  • I’m a man, but I can only cry when imam explains how Rasulullah saw & the sahaba works towards their marriage & advises their children. I know I have many weaknesses, but I also know I’ve tried & have always, always, always longed for an Islamic dating & marriage. Maybe my longing is to find someone that have that longing to uphold the deen, even when we’re not perfect like other fully practicing families. Please make du’a for me for I don’t know who’s du’as will be answered by Allah SWT. Jazakallahu khayran kathira… May Allah SWT reward you greatly & in abundance.

  • MashaAllah, such beautiful and meaningful advices all with reference to hadis and ayats. I’m currently 24 and unfortunately divorced and the part where you mentioned that there are 5 stages I really cried cause even though we both were really good people, it was a marriage my family convinced me to do it and in the 4th stage I was the only one trying to solve and find solutions to the problems while fighting where as he was only arguing, saying sorry but wanting me to back off and come back and follow him instead. I felt like I had no voice and he wouldn’t make ne understand or understand me at all but just say sorry like a robot (being 12 years elder than me). I know asking for Khula was the last resort I had and I do feel terrible sometimes. But InshaAllah I’ll pray to find someone as you mentioned, who fits me in all 3 criteria just like I’ll be for him and that we both follow the 5 stages of marriage together. Aameen!

  • Masha Allah the way this brother is a loving husband subhan Allah and loving his beautiful wife Masha Allah . May Allah SWT makes all our childrens to learn from this brother and bring BARAKAT, NOOR, HAPPINESS to every marriage couples, our children’s who are getting married in future and every ummah house ameen 🤲🏼

  • GenZ here, These are the Aspects one wants to looks for in their future Spouse.. and i too have these things priority wise But people around me call it as “High Standard”. These are the basic things in marriage but hard to find.. Still Allah Azzawajal made you whom you deserve, just need have sabr and believe, faith on Allah Azzawajal ❤

  • Prophet Muhammad (SAW/PBUH) said: “In 3 situations, if you pray dua, it will definitely be accepted:\r 1) When your body starts shaking.\r 2) When you got fear in your heart.\r 3) When you got tears in your eyes.\r The Prophet (PBUH) also said:\r “Whoever shares this knowledge, he will have a house in front of me in Jannah… ( Al-Bukhari )

  • This is first sheikh with common sense alhamdillah that builds ppl up not drags down ppl, and yes lailaha ilalah…is more deep than we Muslim taking for granted… I have an important question, in regarding a women with jobs as he recommended, if she doesn’t have a job or cannot have a job how is she be the right person? If her situation doesn’t allow her to have a job and how is she going to meet a person that she/he would reconsider each other ?

  • Pray for me 😢 .the most difficult tough decision for me is marriage . everything is easy money etc because its not in my control.i dont know how the person will be also am not finding person most beautiful girls religious i have met know but no feeling for them 😢 . Need someone i love but i dont know is tht person in this world whats Allah has planned i dont know ya rabb

  • My female cousin got married to a guy within 2 months of knowing eachother, he seemed like the most god fearing muslim to ever exist and then she finds out that he is the most sociopathic and narcicistic human she ever met and got divorced I personally as a man, wouldnt “date” per sé, but i would want to get to know each other for more than a year so we can know each other and see if we’re compatible, or even spot red flags

  • I learned new things here, those 5 stages, I don’t know how to deal with conflict and pull up, and I don’t know how to deal with women, I usually let the person go, and stop contacting her immediately knowing she made a mistake, and most of my prediction is correct, and let her leave with the consequences, but after this, I will listen to her, letting go of her, and let Allah SWT guided her, and realize her own mistake, make her learn her mistake, and try to work with each other, I’m okay if you are argumentative, but if you don’t value my advice, then I feel it is a bit turn off, cause I want both of us produce best in relationship, jannah and dunya, Inshallah.

  • is necessary to base one’s choice on solid criteria, in order to avoid disappointment, or even worse, divorce, about which the Prophet said “Of all the things that God has made lawful, divorce is the one He hates the most”. This article therefore offers some tips to guide all those who want a peaceful marriage. Why him or her? Above all, we must remember that marriage is the result of a personal choice. If it is obviously allowed to ask for advice, the partner can in no case be imposed, and this by anyone. Our Prophet lets us know that the choice of a soul mate can relate to four things, namely: “wealth, nobility, beauty and piety”. Beauty can naturally influence the decision, because it is always better to marry a person we like. It should however be stressed that beauty alone does not guarantee anything, and that it would be dangerous to marry someone for the sole reason of their physique. As for wealth, it is true that nowadays materialism is gaining ground, especially in modern societies, which could lead some to consider the financial situation of the person as being, wrongly of course, the most important pillar of marriage. On the other hand, the meaning of nobility in this hadith rather means family nobility and the rank thereof. In other words, to marry so-and-so because he is the son of so-and-so… Finally, piety is the first criterion which must tip the scales of our decision, as is so well mentioned the Prophet when he said: “Choose piety and you will not bite your fingers”.

  • Masah Allah this is what I am looking for Shake pray for me I love a girl and I told her that I love you buh she said she’s not ready for marriage we can date for 2 years I told her 2 years is to much for me so i try to convince her buh still the same thing, so I quit . From now on looking for a good person may Allah help me to find someone who love me ❤ Amen

  • Thank you for giving the advices. I have one question. Considering that girls (or boys may watch other female article) may also watch this article and it’s not an emotionally article (like revert story), wouldn’t it be better to not show the person himself but his voice behind and show only the words as you’re showing the questions. This way you could get more reward, insha’Allah, for avoiding being the reason people committing the zina of the eye.

  • Yaa Rab… Please let me marry her. And provide ease on both of our heart ❤️. And Also make each other better for each other. Allah Humma Ameen. Dear Brother and sister please supplicate for me. I’m nothing but Stranger for you. So please ask Allah for my marriage I’m going through lots of hardship ( Alhamdulillah). Jazak Allah Khair❤

  • There is great wisdom in what you say, brother, but please consider that in this day and age, many women work outside the house for a number of reasons. Some families need the money, some women are highly educated and want to use their knowledge and serve society, which I think they should according to Islam. And then there are some women, me included, who are just not happy only tending to the house and children. An unhappy women is neither a good spouse nor a good mother. Could you please address this concern?

  • Assalamu alaikum .. I am here to ask you a doubt .. one of my female friend was gifted quran from a man who was interested in marrying her. Unfortunately that marriage was called off .. And she gave me that quran instead .. is it ok for me to have that quran? Or since that man might have given the quran to her as a gift his niyyah might have been something else .. But my friend gave it to me whole heartedly, so is it ok for me to take it from her?? Somebody with more knowledge plzz help me here ..

  • While I appreciate the message and the points made, I have a major issue with scholars who put on accents and weird grammatics. He stated he grew up in Australia, speaking English. Where the does the grammar and accent come from? Why do people think they need to put on these mannerisms in order to speak to Ummah?
