Is It Acceptable To Wear Jeans To A Wedding?

Jeans can be worn to a wedding, but they are generally considered casual attire and may not be appropriate for formal or semi-formal events. The dress code of the wedding determines whether jeans, shorts, tank tops, and tennis shoes are acceptable. Tan is a neutral color that pairs well with almost all colors and is a sophisticated choice for formal occasions like weddings. However, jeans are not typically acceptable for cocktail-style weddings, even with a blazer.

Boots can be a stylish and versatile choice for many occasions, including weddings. However, there are several factors to consider before deciding to wear them. First and foremost, do not wear white (even if you look good in white). Etiquette experts at the Emily Post Institute now say that wearing white (and its variations such as cream) to a wedding is perfectly acceptable as long as your outfit doesn’t look like a wedding dress or compete with the bride’s gown in any way.

Whether you can wear jeans to a wedding with a casual dress code depends on the couple’s preference and the venue’s setting. If the wedding is taking place at a beach, park, or backyard, jeans can be acceptable. However, it’s best to err on the side of caution and choose dressy or tailored jeans that are paired with a nice shirt or blouse.

Jeans, particularly blue ones, are quite casual, so they would only be appropriate at a very casual wedding. In very casual communities, a t-shirt and jeans might be OK, but it’s rude to not take into consideration the marrying couple and their family.

While jeans can be comfortable and versatile, they may not be appropriate for a formal or black-tie wedding. Be wary of wearing jeans to weddings and ensure your outfit is appropriate for the occasion.

  • When I first watch your article I was like “lady, I wear what I want” then I watched your other articles and started thinking “I wanna be elegant, too” then I went through my wardrobe and throwing away (donating to Red Cross) my non-elegant outfits and now I’m buying an elegant coat and cashmere tops. And I am obsessed perusal your articles.

  • Your advice is becoming outdated. There are people who interview in jeans and get hired. I’m one of them. I do it out of principle. I don’t want to be discriminated against on the basis of putting forward my normal appearance and I want employers to learn not to do so towards others. I am a jeans person and putting on something other than jeans is NOT presenting “my best self”. It is presenting a FAKE self. I have interviewed in jeans for years, been hired for various jobs, and stayed employed (as an English as a foreign language teacher, tutor, on one occasion an SEO job). What is disrespectful toward the job about wearing jeans in 2019? They’re no longer purely workwear; for decades they have been a normal, highly popular fashion item. Even your advice that “it is better to be overdressed than to be underdressed” is not applicable accross the board anymore. There are some VERY casual startup or IT companies out there and coming to an interview in a suit there may actually HARM your prospects. I agree that it may still be a bit risky to wear jeans to an interview, but I don’t think it jeopardizes your prospects to the same extent that it would have 20 years ago. You should take into account the corporate culture – there’s not much sense wearing jeans to the interview if you’re applying at PriceWaterhouseCoopers, a big law firm, or a financial institution. But if you’re going somewhere where you expect you will be able to dress in jeans for work, I don’t think the interviewer will in anywhere near all cases just think “this guy dared to wear jeans, he doesn’t value the job, I won’t consider him”.

  • Ditto Lauren. From my experience, there are not enough young people who understand this. I see poor dressing often in applicants/ interviews in my company and so wish parents would teach their children the importance of this lesson. Too casual or sloppy does not translate to professional in my mind and it is not the image I want for my business. My wife and I really enjoy the standard of your articles.
