Is It Wrong To Get Physical Before Marriage?

The Bible teaches that there should be no sexual intercourse prior to marriage, and even if a man and a woman are engaged to be married, it is considered sin for them to have premarital sex. Physical intimacy is a key component of love, and the Bible teaches that sex before marriage is immoral. In 1 Corinthians 7:2, Paul states that physical touch is reserved for marriage, and lust is a sin.

Emotional intimacy refers to the closeness and connection we feel to another person on an emotional level, while physical intimacy refers to the physical touch and affection we share with another person. The Bible does not provide any bright-line rule for how far is too far before marriage, as it only tells us that lust is a sin and that we should “flee youthful passions.”

In Islam, physical intimacy between non-mahram Muslims is forbidden before marriage, and holding hands with a non-mahram before marriage is considered haram. The routine acceptance of sex before marriage is one of the clearest signs of worldliness in our age. However, religions like Islam and Christianity generally frown against a physical relationship before marriage or a romantic physical relationship.

Foreplay, such as fondling, nudity, and erotic behavior, should be avoided until marriage. It is okay to have a past (be it sexual experiences or emotional attachments) before getting married, but sex before marriage is seen as cheating with your future husband in society. Virginity of a girl is a mark of her worth, and it is important to maintain physical intimacy in marriage to avoid potential issues such as fear of breakup and the negative impact of sex before marriage.

Is giving birth before marriage a sin?

Rev. Diana Nkesiga, the vicar of All Saints Cathedral, thinks it’s wise for Christians in this situation to step down from leadership. However, she says that being pregnant is not a sin. If we think this way, we can make the child feel bad. “The sin is having sex and getting pregnant. If you repent, you can still come to Communion.” However, she says many Christians don’t listen and judge too quickly. Some girls are raped, and some act out from home frustrations. Fr. Dennis Wamala of Gaba Catholic Church says these incidents are rare at his church, so it would be hard to ask a devotee about a pregnancy. Even if the unwed mother is a choir member, it is usually up to her to step aside. “You can keep coming to church and no one will mind,” she adds.

What does the Bible say about physical intimacy before marriage?

The New Testament keeps the same sexual rules as the Old Testament. Joseph wanted to break off his betrothal to Mary, who was pregnant. Joseph thought Mary had done something wrong, and the whole community would disapprove of her behavior (Matt. 1:19). The Bible says Mary was a virgin (Matt. 1:20; Luke 1:34). The logic of 1 Corinthians 7—that it is better to marry than to burn with passion—only works if sexual activity belongs in marriage. Sexual intimacy should only be between a man and a woman who are married (1 Cor. 7:36–38). Any other context for sex is sin. This means that sex before marriage is wrong. Fornication is sin. Fornication is wrong, but why? The Bible doesn’t say much about sex before marriage. The number of verses discussing a topic doesn’t tell us how important or serious it is. The Bible says that people knew fornication was wrong, so there wasn’t much to say about it. The Bible says premarital sex is wrong because it is against God’s plan for sex. Fornication is a sin because it goes against the nature of sex, marriage, and the family. Marriage is a bond between a man and a woman (Mal. 2:14) A covenant bond sealed by sexual intimacy. In his book Marriage as Covenant, Gordon Hugenberger says that in the Old Testament, marriage was usually made by swearing an oath and then having sex. The two elements were meant to go together, with the promise before the ratification. Hugenberger says that because sex is a private but binding oath, the public verba solemnia were the right choice because they show that a marriage is being solemnized. Couples who have sex before marriage are making a public promise. Without the latter, the former is an attempt to enjoy the benefits of the covenant without entering into it.

Is it a sin to kiss before marriage for Catholics?

Like most Catholics, I always thought it was fine to kiss your boyfriend or girlfriend, as long as it didn’t go further. I found out a few years ago that this isn’t always true. Kissing between unmarried people is a mortal sin.

This might sound extreme. I didn’t understand at first. Passionate kissing is a sin. This kind of intimacy stirs up the passions. It’s the first step to sex and gets you in the mood.

Is this a mortal sin? Even St. Thomas Aquinas knew the dangers. If you don’t believe me, take it from St. Thomas Aquinas: A kiss, caress, or touch does not always mean a sin. But when done for pleasure, it is a sin.

  • Girl, I respect your choice but I think you need to take some history lessons and do more research if you are going to involve religion in this topic. Women were not allowed to have sex before marriage not because it’s the “right thing to do” and the “truth about relationships” but because, it was a form of social control over the female population. Women, in that time and age, were more likely to get pregnant (condom didn’t exist until 1880) and probably die from a pregnancy, so marriage was a way to ensure women gave birth within a pre stablished family. That’s it.

  • If you want to find someone that satisfy your needs you have to be vulnerable. If you don’t wanna have sex before marriage, that’s fine. But marriage is not this magical thing that is gonna make anyone treat you right all if the sudden, or guarantee they are gonna stay with you forever. Marring someone when yoh dint know them sexually sounds like a huge mistake. If you don’t have sex with them before marriage, have a sexless marriage then.

  • What’s the point of waiting until marriage? A couple in their 30s who have been dating for 5 years vs 18 year olds who get married after being together for 1 year. The marriage aspect is arbitrary when it comes to sexual maturity and connecting through sex. I think you are conflating marriage with a genuine human connection.

  • In your situation I think it can work to wait until marriage to have sex but realistically if you were someone who hadn’t had sex before or hadn’t masturbated (there are quite a lot of women who haven’t done it or rarely do) you wouldn’t know your likes and dislikes. That takes a lot of time to learn realistically. The only real risk of waiting until marriage is that you could be completely incompatible with your partner when it comes to sex life – which isn’t the most important aspect but it is an important one when it comes to long term love, attraction and satisfaction. I do think hookup culture has gone too far and most straight women I know have regretted sleeping around or often had their feelings hurt or bad sexual experiences. I feel a middle ground of waiting until you’re in love with someone and have been in a relationship for a little while is a healthier place to be than outright ruling it out pre marriage. There’s also no shame in being 1/2/3 years into a serious relationship and wanting to have sex when you previously decided to wait until marriage

  • Congratulations for your courage and faith ❤ I never even imagined I would see a article like this on your website. Me and my husband waited till marriage and I can truly say it is the best! Also, making this decision anytime is wise. For sure God will help you find a man on His own heart, who appreciates you and stands with the principles of purity. True love respects boundaries.

  • I absolutely loved this article. Just by reading the title “Sex before marriage was the worst thing I did to my mental health” I thought to myself, that’s why God wants us to wait until marriage. I get so excited when you said Exactly that after in the article. I am so happy for you and the fact that you are studying the Bible and doing your research to find The Truth because there is actual evidence to believe in the scriptures. Thank you so much for your content and sharing your life with this community. We love you and support you❤
