The goal of marriage in Hinduism is to foster self-restraint and love for the entire family, which keeps the family united and prevents its breakdown.

Hindu literature indicates that love marriages were recognized and accepted in ancient times, such as the legend of Dushyanta and Shakuntala in the Mahabharata. However, arranged marriages became predominant, and love marriages became unacceptable or frowned upon. In Vedic society, only love marriage is acceptable, and it would be unthinkable for Dharmic people to force a girl into a marriage she is not happy with.

In Hinduism, love marriages are allowed as Gandharva vivaha, meaning love and dating are allowed, but only serious dating for the purpose of marriage. However, there are various beliefs for love marriage, and some people view same-sex marriage as unacceptable.

According to the Dharma Shastras, marriage has distinct functions, including Prajaa, or procreation. Adultery is sexual intercourse between a married man and a woman not his wife, or between a married woman and a man not her. While Hinduism encourages diversity of practice and customs, core values underlie all of this diversity.

This means that a person can’t marry up to their second cousin from the mother’s side and up to their fourth cousin from the father’s side. The parties should not be related to each other.
