Is Marriage Equality Going To End?

LGBTQ leaders are concerned that the Supreme Court could weaken or overturn the constitutional right to gay marriage as soon as next year. President Joe Biden signed the Respect for Marriage Act into law, ensuring marriage equality for same-sex and interracial couples. The 267 to 157 vote included 47 Republicans who agreed that the right to same-sex marriage should be enshrined in federal law after Justice Clarence Thomas’ decision.

The House of Representatives passed a bill protecting gay marriage rights after the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Obergefell v. Hodges. The Respect for Marriage Act provides exemptions for religious groups and excludes people with disabilities, but could still lead to rollbacks around the country.

Sasha Issenberg, author of “The Engagement,” doesn’t see the Supreme Court’s decision in Obergefell v. Hodges being a significant step towards marriage equality. The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill protecting gay marriage rights, following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Obergefell.

LGBTQ figures argue that marriage is an oppressive institution and that if the Supreme Court decides to overturn Obergefell, marriage rights could still be rolled back around the country. The Respect for Marriage Act provides exemptions for religious groups and excludes people with disabilities, but could still lead to rollbacks.

  • You didn’t need to include the final “surprise”, because it was obvious enough. Beautiful short story, cute starring couple, it brought a smile to my lips. I hear gay marriage is being approved in Illinois this year? Congratulations to all Illinois citizens for this small step towards a better society. In my country it’s been legal for about 10 years and we are proud of it. Keep up the good work: this past year, I have been saddened to see that in many countries, homosexuals are chasen more than ever…

  • People who showed their dislikes to this article do need to be aware that you can personally prefer to live your life the way you wish, but you do not have the right to judge others based on their sexual orientation. You don’t have to really support or champion for LGBTQ rights but please show your respect to anyone around you.
