The Hebrew Bible and Talmud mention the practice of paying a bride price to the father of a minor girl, as stated in Exodus 22:16-17. This was a gift made by a man as a gift to the family of a woman he desired to be his wife. The temple veil, the thickest of all biblical veils, formed an impenetrable barrier between humanity and God until God tore it apart. In both the Old and New Testaments, the people of God are called the bride of God. Brides in Bible times were purchased, and the bride price was the amount paid to the bride’s father. Deuteronomy 24:1 speaks of a man taking a wife, and the term translated “took” could be translated as “acquired.” The story of Jacob’s marriage to Laban’s daughters introduces bride service instead of bride price, where Jacob paid the bride price in the form of seven years’ work for each of the two wives. The issue of whether Christians should pay bride price is significant within the context of religious beliefs and cultural practices.
The bride price, also known as a dowry, is a significant financial transfer from the groom to the new father-in-law before marriage. This practice is not a payment for the transfer of a human being, but rather a gift to the family of a woman he desired to marry. In the Old Testament, the bride price is not mentioned in the New Testament, but it represents a well-established custom similar to the ancient Near Eastern patriarchal extended family system. In Exodus 22:16-17, a man is commanded to give the bride-price for a virgin who is not betrothed and lies with her, and to make her his wife if her father refuses. The bride price is not a condition for marriage but only as a penalty for rape. It is unchristian to treat the bride-price as a means of making money off one’s own child.

However, he says the bride price also ensures the woman’s family can’t take her back if there’s a dispute. These interviews show that although the bride price shows a man’s commitment to his wife, it can also make it harder for a woman to leave an unhappy marriage.

The bride’s family usually paid for most wedding costs, including the wedding planner, invitations, dress, ceremony, reception, flowers, photography, and music. “It’s harder to think about this now, and I am a feminist, but historically it has to do with the ancient practice of a bride’s family giving a dowry to the groom,” Post says.
The brides parents also hosted the engagement party, while some bridesmaids paid for the bridal shower. (Or anyone, really, besides the couple.) The groom’s family paid for the rehearsal dinner, honeymoon, wedding day transportation, and officiant. The groom paid for the bride’s engagement ring, wedding ring, and gifts for the groomsmen. The groom’s family often pays for the reception alcohol. But remember this from Emily Post’s Wedding Etiquette Guide: “Traditions make weddings special, so a spending plan should help these traditions, not be a burden.”

It may: make girls marry young and have more kids; make husbands think they own their wives, so they mistreat them; and make women stay in bad marriages because they have to pay back some of the money they got when they got married. We examine the relationship between bride price and various outcomes. We examined 317 couples from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
