You would be surprised that many of us have not seen the whole country because of the expenses needed to travel around islands. If you want to experience the coldest place in the country, try going up north to Baguio City, which is the country’s summer capital.
I appreciate your article because it is honest and frank. Being a Filipino-American, I just spent the whole month of June there, and I entirely agree with your “7 things”, especially #7. Wifi is spotty. I was pretty fortunate to stay in some nice hotels and only there was I able to hook up to the internet well. Did not do any uploading though.
I absolutely agree with you about the comparatively exorbitant cost of accommodations and airfares in the Philippines. I’m Filipino and live in the U.S. and have been going home almost every year, sometimes 2-3 times a year. I’ve also traveled extensively in SE Asia for work and find your observations spot on. There is so much more competition from local and international hotels and air carriers overseas that pushes prices down. With monopolies in many industries in the Philippines, there is no need for hotel and airlines to lower prices and offer a better product.

yeah, island hopping — plan it so it’s close to each islands not hop from one side to the other side, food — yeah.. loving the bbq, english — my thoughts, since we get taught english (before 1987, it was spanish), we get taught english at a young age, but my thoughts would go to, as you get older, you loose it because it’s not as used as the local and national languages (filipino + regional language). chopsticks – we use hands hahaha.. austronesians… ever tried using the coconut shell as your bowl/rich holder yup that’s us.. you won’t see it as much but we used to use them.
Even us Filipinos travelling to beaches are planned ahead of time as ticket and accommodation are expensive. So it will take us months to prepare tickets, accommodation. Maybe it’s expensive in the Phils as more islands are separated and maybe to minimize travelling in that islands like El Nido, Boracay, Coron, Siargao.
I’m a Canadian born in the Philippines. I totally agree with you about the expensive Wi-Fi and the cost of traveling. Most of it is because of the duopoly they have going on there. They don’t allow outside airlines and telecoms companies in, so the companies have no incentive to improve their services as there is no other competition. They should introduce short inter-island flights between the major Philippine islands like Cebu, Panay, Negros, etc.. That would cut traveling costs because people don’t have to fly back to Manila every time they want to visit another beautiful island. That would be a win for local Tourism as well. That said, I actually think we have the same problems here in Canada but it’s getting better with the new budget airlines coming in. It still has some room for improvement here though. I wish the Philippines government sees this article and look into improving the country’s infrastructure, especially in the provinces. It should be a priority for countries that rely so much on tourism.
Had to lower our expectations as well when fortunately we get to travel to Europe (Milan and Luzern, Australia even) as now we found out there’s no perfect place. With the recent facelift and upgrades in the economy and certain cities all over the Phils, yes, pls expect also an upgrade in the cost of living. That is right. Even here in Manila, wifi is slow and cutting in and out. Use mobile data when uploading😅, try it. It’s way better than wifi. I always hear from a lot of vloggers that they’re struggling for wifi here. Hope the government should consider this including the accomodation. It’s really expensive here but not that so quality. Even boarding houses, expensive too. So sad for those employees earning minimum wage, it sucks. That’s why poor people remain poor and rich people get richer. Can u imagine, monthly salary here is very low but we pay more for accomodation? ☹

Every country has problem on it, even here in ireland if you will visit a isolated place you will tell to yourself why i went there?🥴& bcoz of the pandemic plus the war from ukraine-russia & inflation😩everything goes high😫(except my hieght😁) it just so happened you travel on different situation. i’ve got to say, i live in the US. Going to PH for vacation is really affordable for me.That being said, I have no comparison experience with other places like Thailand or Vietnam. I recently travelled to PH and did notice my Grab transportation went up from last time. Still, I am not wealthy, but things just cost more in the US. My lifestyle is definately cheaper in the PH. But the internet does suck in PH.
Interesting. We stay mostly in MetroManila when we go to the Philippines so I didn’t experience the problem of the internet. You’re right about the internet when we went to Coron. We did use Smart there also but we bought both sim card. We also bring Off Repellant but the mosquitos don’t care and still bite us
Yes I agree with planning ahead… Accomodations and transport most especially. when you do your research you might also used all available options like on the internet yeah? but i would say ask the locals instead or try to post something on your wall on where you are heading next so yeah locals or we as your followers will suggest/recommend for you.
Accommodation is way too much for what you get here in PH. Glad we found Holiday Ocean view in Samal Island for only 2,500 a night, you get the condo and oceanview. Internet is not available here hahahaha PH is not suitable if you need fast internet… and the food here in Samal island is very low quality and the serving time is 1 hour up hahahaha hard to get everything you want on a holiday
People should not travel if they cannot afford and always remember you got what you paid for! If stay at BGC or high class hotel you have to pay more than airbnb or hostel, if you eat at high class restaurant you have to pay more instead of eating at local carenderia which is kulas favorite place to eat, you have to do research and planning before you travel instead of whining so many things you dont know about Philippines my advice to both you watch kulas becoming pilipino vlog you will learn a lot from him.

Good news for you, a lot of these problems regarding accommodation / travel expenses and etc. will be soon corrected. The Philippines has a new head of tourism secretary Christina Frasco, and she’s quite possibly the best, most qualified one yet. The DOT has a masterplan in infrastructure, price regulations, etc. So expect massive changes, like real soon.
I felt sorry for the spotty internet of my beloved country. It’s true when it comes to wifi you have to not expect much good about it especially if you go far from the city. It’s still trying to improve but hopefully it will be resolved soon 😅! It’s true also about the mosquitoes 🦟 when it’s raining season. Always be prepared for mosquito repellent😅. But still, it’s more fun in the Philippines 🇵🇭❤ and it’s cheaper compared to other countries. You just have to be alert. Be informed ahead! My husband and I still chose Philippines 🇵🇭
Hello, I want to visit the Philippines soon. I will be doing so for one month. I’ve never travelled out of the USA. I have no clue how anything works. Am I supposed to exchange currency before I leave my country or can I do it in the Philippines? Can I use my credit cards in the Philippines? Do I need a visa or visitor visa to visit Philippines? You have so much luggage using a motor bike is hard if you pack light travel light, then motor bikes the way, ferry crossing on a barge fliat ferry is cheap, say your in dumaguete there’s 8 islands of there, 30 min to 40 min crossings bike 2 person average about $ 15.40aussie per crossing so cheap great place to dumaguete to base yourself, cheaper accommodation, and the island of negros, is huge can spend months exploring there, also you can get an visa extension there with good visa agents helping you out, 😀

We visited Philippines in 1982 of December and hotels in Manila even with Airline discount was 45 US Dollars and 40 Dollars in the province and your saying 41 US Dollars in this Pandemic and year 2022 is expensive….try going to Carribean country if you can find a decent one for 41 Dollars…in the outback of Australia in this Pandemic what can 41 Dollars get you

I think in the Philippines they like the rest of Asia are trying to stop low rent backpackers and digital nomads.unfortunately they don’t spend enough and don’t usually get proper life insurance. Holidays are different but I understand the reason why you feel it’s too expensive.Thailand is changing its views on d nomads since the end of the pandemic too. Not enough money coming in .

The only good internet here is wired, even then some areas have dismal wired connection. Mobile data is 15megabits and upwards in a lot of urban areas, but there are data caps like $1 for every 8gb for 7 days, in 5g areas you can have unlimited mobile data for $15 for 30 days. The philippines is expensive compared to bangkok in thailand, I’m filipino and we love spending holidays there cause food is cheaper and more varied, transport is cheaper and the metro rail is great, hotels are cheaper, cheap clothing is very good quality, and mobile data is amazing.

if the philippines had perfect wifi then the remote tourist attractions like palawan would be overrun by tourist and foreigners. Some of the best properties in islands are owned by Westeners who married local women. Balance has to be attained, to maintain the beauty of nature. Tourism sometimes ruins it.

Weather to me is more or less same for each year. Like autumn, winter, summer, spring. Monsoon, typhoon season etc etc is more or less there yearly. Just what category, we do not know. With satellite it can be forecasted. But not earthquakes or volcanoes.
Very accurate article! As a Canadian married to a Filipino I can 100% agree. Especially regarding the accommodation and travel within the country. Having traveled extensively around SE Asia the accommodation is much better value for money in Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam. Highly recommend travellers take this into consideration when planning the length of your stay in said countries. As well, travelling from island to island the price can really vary if they perceive you as a foreigner, meanwhile if my husband (Filipino) made the arrangement it would be much cheaper. 😅 Great informative article guys!
If you want everything to be like it is in the west, then stay in the west, I left the UK to retire here 13 years ago and have no desire to go back. As for accommodation, it is as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be, the big plus of the Philippines is the people, I live in Dumaguete on the island of Negros and the locals here are so friendly and ready to make conversation. I couldn’t care less about the rain, Brit’s are used to lousy weather even in the summer, at least the rain is warm here..😀 and there is plenty of sun to be had all year round. I came here to escape the madness of the west and I feel much safer here, so that’s my pitch for what it’s worth…

If Philippines was anywhere near as overhyped as Thailand, making people recklessly come to the country off of more or less “forced influence” and a whole lot more tourists were just jumping off the bridge to go to Philippines cause we put other countries down to get you to pass on places and go to Philippines instead; all the stuff you said would be a problem maybe. We that love Philippines that are foreigners dont approach hype of Philippines anywhere near as much as Thailand lovers hype it, we arent necessarily pushing people to go there like other countries in SE Asia’s fans do, we just tell people it is a place we love and we exude energy that people can feel how we feel about it, we leave it to the potential traveler, unlike others. Thay is why I dont hype Philippines, Ill be honored to tell people how much I adore it, but I wont strongly recommend it to a traveler friend of mine wanting to go to Asia or somewhere, incase they are “disappointed” that is why I hope we never hype Philippines, I dont want travelers going there to “find out” what the hype is about, leads to articles like this, not a bad one of these articles though like some that seem to be straight up, pre bias Philippines haters.

You are a nomad so you should not worry about the internet in the Philippines you can move tomorrow in other countries.It’s also a test to many foreigners wether they love a particular countries it’s because of the fast internet speed or they love the country it’s because the people are nice,the culture is lovely and the prices there is cheap compared to other countries islands.If the accomodations are expensive then I think they are testing the foreigners wether they want to go to that islands or going to other countries it’s because pHilippines also want to control the tourist population visiting in that islands.
Actually if u did ur research then none of the 7 things will surprise u 🤣 everyone knows our wifi sucks. All the vloggers knew that. Travelling will be hard cuz we have thousands of islands. So u have to have a plan n not wing it. If u do then of course everything will be expensive. Everyone speaks english cuz we rank 4th in the world. N if u noticed almost all the signs r in english. We only have 2 seasons, wet n dry so u just have to come here when its dry. Why should all asians use chopsticks? This one is just too .. 😄. Just stay the country where you’re happy with a high speed Wi-Fi or Internet! And stop comparing our country to the other country!. ‘Couse we’re totally different than the rest!
