“Lab created diamonds” are still real diamonds, not “simulated diamonds”. They have the same chemical makeup as a mined diamond. The only difference is that one is made through science, and the other is made by the earth. Plus the price tag! Lab diamonds are cheaper because we can make them ourselves, but mined diamonds need to be created by the earth.
I worked for a corporation for 8 years, we sold lab grown diamonds and were soooooo careful to make sure the consumer understood they were looking at lab grown stones. The price tags were even a different color and the diamonds were laser inscribed “lab created”. Make sure you’re purchasing from a reputable jeweler.

Is diamond 1000% more brilliant? – To pay thousands for a lab grown diamond vs moissanite is crazy as you’re not paying for the story of some rock sitting in the earth for “millions of years” anymore. The reason this is important to me honestly, is because you know damn well that there’s companies out there that would try to charge you thousands for a diamond that only cost $50 to make in a lab, selling it under the pretense that it’s a “natural” diamond. I am a Gemologist Appraiser and I have seen some shockingly bad business practices, 3ct Princess cut with 22 laser drill holes with no disclosure, 5ct Moissanite sold as a Diamond guy paid half a million bucks for it, 3ct Cubic Zirconia sold as Diamond. When buying an engagement ring, go to a reputable company that has a Graduate Gemologist on staff and insist on working with them ONLY even if they are not actually a sales person on a sales floor, you do not need any of that flowery sales jargon like ‘Oh when’s the big day, where did you meet, how did you know it was her and she’s the one’ No you do not need that! You need facts without frills! An example would be the 4 ‘Cs’ color-clarity-cut-carat weight. Most important are cut and clarity, carat weight, well you buy the size you can afford and color, well pick the color that pleases you most, could be white, off white, yellow, just the color you like the most. Ask them ‘Tell me about the 4Cs. An example of their reply could be ‘VS1 in clarity, H in color, excellent cut, 1.02 cts.’ Then ask them to go into detail about that Diamond grade. VS1 means that it has a speck or two inside the Diamond, H in color means it is white face up with a hint of color when viewed from the side, cut refers to the ideal set of proportions used when cutting the Diamond, 1.02 cts is the weight. Don’t be afraid believe me you are better off getting technical information than just another earful of flowery sales hype. Call and make an appointment to meet with their Gemologist and let them know ahead of time, this is my budget, this is her style, simple or fancy, give them some info to work with so they can help you.
I actually know someone this happened to. They actually told her it was a natural diamond. Her fiancé went to get it appraised for insurance and learned it wasn’t a real diamond. It was a cubic zirconia! They went back to the jeweler and they said, “this never happens”. Tried to give them a smaller, crappy diamond for it. They finally fixed it after they threatened them with a bad review and a lawsuit. I wonder how many other people that store tricked into spending thousands on a cubic zirconia. Diamonds are not rare and should not cost anywhere near as much as they do but if they tell you it’s a diamond and it is not, that is clearly fraud and inexcusable.
What’s funny is they didn’t pay “natural” diamond price, but were surprised to find out they had a lab stone and made a fuss to the news. First and foremost, to be bothered by the difference when they’re elementally the same thing is incredibly uppity. But second, if you wanted something special why would you get something cliche like a diamond anyway? Was it a status symbol for you? Because cubic zirconia looks exactly the same on your finger. Only buy lab created diamonds or moissanite Diamonds created in labs are also real and will test as real unless it’s not a diamond at all. Even moissanite will test as a diamond on many machines. My hubby of 20years and I could not afford a diamond waay back in the day. He loves me so much that he wanted me to have the ring I wanted. So, he had the one of a kind ring made by the artist. It had a zircon in it for years. Until about five years ago – when he put a near flawless one carat ethically sourced – lab created diamond in my ring. There is a slight inclusion in my diamond that looks like an angel wing. Completely unique and nobody died for it!!! Also… he loves me the exact same as when it was a zircon- which btw – I kept and wear in a locket around my neck.
Just putting this out there too, a moissanite can also test positive on a diamond tester as well as a moissanite tester and some moissanite creators do put some inclusions in them for realism and they are difficult for even a jeweler to tell the difference BUT a really good jeweler familiar with moissanite can tell.
This is why I take a loop with me if I ever go to a jewelry store. You have no clue the crap they are setting into a ring setting if you don’t look at it yourself. I looped my engagement ring and knew that rock intimately before the purchase. It’s like buying a used car and not having a mechanic take a look at it before purchase. A lab created diamond it’s going to be gorgeous at half the price or more . To be ethical a jeweler should indicate immediately whether a diamond is mined or grown in a lab. One thing about a lab diamond is that it is perfect. Diamond companies that mine diamonds don’t appreciate the fact that perfect diamonds are being grown in labs . De Beers does not like perfect lab grown diamonds. De Beers would rather have you think that diamonds are scarce and you’re real lucky if you find a great diamond. Then of course you pay an outlandish price. Inclusions in a diamond is not a birthmark. Yeah it is a flaw. If you can see it with the naked eye then the value of the diamond plummets. Simulated and lab-grown are two different stones. Simulated is not a diamond. Lab-grown is a diamond.
A mined Diamond or Lab Grown Diamond are still both made of Carbon. Honestly, a grown Diamond looks better because of no imperfections. But any of y’all check into Moissanite stones? They’re brighter and more sparkly, honestly my wife likes them more than Diamonds because of how they shine brighter. Pricey but not nearly as much as a Diamond.

My engagement ring is a stone from my great aunt’s wedding ring my husband had reset for me. Don’t most people keep family heirlooms like treasured jewelry pieces? All of my jewelry i wear on the daily, with the exception of my wedding band (because I also wanted something that was new and was mine first, it will eventually get passed down and the history will start with me and my husband) they are all passed down family treasures. CORRECTION….SYNTHETIC DIAMONDS, LAB-CREATED DIAMONDS, SYNTHETIC DIAMONDS they all mean the same. SIMULANT is different from them. Lab created/Synthetic/man made diamonds are also sold with inclusions or none, or with tint of color or colorless like NATURAL/MINED diamonds. They tend to be cheaper when they are smaller and of lower quality. I agree you have to ask your jeweler the right questions… if it’s a diamond (not just if it looks like) ask if Is it Natural or lab created diamond?
I bought a mined diamond on that website that they mention Diamond Nexus. I knew that it was a man made diamond. If you take the time to read their website like you should buying from any new website, you would know. I preferred the “alternative” because it was wayyy cheaper. Asked yourself this question when you buy a diamond if they were so rare than why is it never a supply and demand issue. Unless you get in the 6 figure range or higher for the diamond they never hold their value. Go to pawn shops and shop for diamonds you will get 50% discounts all day just no warranty or refunds but even still 50% mark up for a warranty is bonkers.
This must be a super old article. A few things I noticed that were off is that she said natural diamonds have inclusions and lab created ones don’t. That’s not 100% accurate cause a lab diamond can also have inclusions. Also another odd thing is that the woman in the article said the jeweler told her that her ring was lab created. A jeweler will not be able to tell if a diamond is lab created unless he has an expensive carbon dating machine to see the age of the diamond. Lab diamonds test as real diamonds when checked with a diamond checking device unless it’s moissanite.

I would not care if my diamond ring came from a mine or a lab, it is literally the same chemical and physical thing just produced by different means. Lab diamonds can be 20-40% less. They probably had a budget and the lab one most likely was cheaper. If they went in saying this is our price point and it wasn’t close to a natural diamond the jeweler isn’t going to show them something they can’t afford. Also you can’t tell a difference and it’s also more ethical to choose a lab diamond

I’ve bought diamond earrings from Diamond Nexus and I wear them every day. Their quality is incredible and it’s perfectly clear on their website that it’s lab grown. I feel like choosing that company was a bad example. There are definitely other companies that would’ve been better examples that are tricking customers and overcharging for lab grown diamonds.
Whoever wrote the script or the end of the article needs to fact check. To the naked eye only your lower quality stones (some Si2 clarity and all i1-i3 clarity) will have visible inclusions (NOT THE SAME THING AS BLEMISHES). A higher quality genuine diamond will usually still have inclusions, but they’re graded with 10x power magnification. Lab diamonds do have inclusions as well so… don’t try to go off your eye test. That’s only going to work with lower quality genuine diamonds..

I went with a 3 carat DEW Moissanite. It’s amazing and has more fire, brilliance and sparkle than a diamond and I f*cking love it. We paid about $10,000 LESS. They measure as a 9.25-9.50 on the Mohs scale, while diamond is a 10. So they’re also durable. And when found in nature, they’re even more rare ☄️ Moissanite is mostly all man made, but can be found in meteorites ☄️ The fact that makes it more rare. Quoting “Moissanite Came from a Meteor! Moissanite was first discovered in Arizona in 1893 by Noble Prize winning French scientist Henri Moissan. His first sample of Moissanite (named after himself) was found inside of a meteorite crater.” What doesn’t make sense about the blood diamond outrage, is that most of these people try to be more ethic. The people complaining about lab grown diamonds, are the same people who are vegan, drive electric cars and do everything they can to minimize their carbon foot print 😂😂
Years ago I worked in jewelry. First, the mark-up is unreal (im talking malls). Second, I recently looked through a mall jewelry ad. I noticed the lab stones were priced sooo high. I couldnt believe it. Lab created does not require the amount of effort like a mined natural stone. I love geology. I own some gorgeous lab creations but nothing compares to a natural stone. Period. Simulants should not be priced so high imo. Hence the word.
It is a tiny small rock which should not be important to anyone. Look around you in the world and don’t focus on small unimportant stuff. If you wore dead and could look at the world, what would be your regrets? That you didn’t have a little rock on your hand or maybe you would regret not doing some charity for someone that needed help, animals or humans??
