📹 Punta Cana: The Don’ts of Punta Cana, The Dominican Republic
Are you heading to Punta Cana and want some tourist information on Punta Cana, The Dominican Republic that will help you …
Really love this article. Often when you ask people for recommendations they can only compare what they knew. You are the only one to actually go to all these resorts over the same period and compare apples to apples. It really helps us with our search. I love quiet resorts but I still found a lot of value in your reviews. Thanks!
James great work as always!! Your review got me to go to Majestic Elegance and our group of 7 is going back. The first time we have ever gone back to the same resort property but it is really worth it. Excellence and Chic are now on our list but we are steering clear of the whole Cap Cana. For what they are charging I want quality that is above “excellence”.
You are right on time! I just recvd some hotel comparisons from my travel agent and several on your list was there. No Royalton, Majestic Elegance but YES to Excellence El Carmen-adults only. Thx to you I watched both of your review vids. Lastly, I’m a foody so are you, it’s very important nx to accommodations and service👏🏽🥳
Very happy to see Azul/Margaritaville made your top 4, especially knowing how much the beach brings down its ranking. Rumor has it that they are combining Azul and Margaritaville into a single resort in Cap Cana very soon. I think that makes sense, since they overlap so much now anyway. Thanks again, James…these articles are fantastic! Not sure where you are getting the stamina to endure the length of these stays, but keep them coming!
You nailed it! Excellence P.C. is a terrific resort. We have been to many resorts in the Dominican and continue to return to Excellence. We have two bookings this winter coming up, Dec with my elderly mother-in-law and in March for a couples get away. This resort is so accessible, even a boardwalk along the beach, I know that mum will really love it! It is a beautiful upscale resort that really lives up to it’s name! Thanks for your great article🙂
Hei James. First of all thank you for all that you do to keep us informed about the places that you travel to. You are the best and you work helps a lot. I know that you didn’t stay at the majestic colonial and I was wondering if you have any thoughts about that place? Keep the good work, nobody out there comes close to you. God bless you always.
I fallowed your recommendation about Riu Republica, me and my partner weren’t disappointed, yes the place is not fancy but the parties are wonderful, The crowd is great and again we had so much fun partying day and night, the music is amazing the vibe is fantastic. Thank you for your recommendation, I can’t wait to go back to Riu Republica.
Hi James. 👍 Have you heard how the Paradisus properties compare on pre reserve/club level ie standard? Also are they like the Royalton where you miss out on much if don’t sign up for the club (diamond) level? Planning a trip out there and trying to bring in adult time whilst kids and teen enjoy their thing. Hyatt properties too expensive like Royalton but Paradisus coming in a tad lower. Just a bit more than Dreams Royal Beach Punta Cana.
Please do a article categorizing the most suitable Punta Cana all inclusive for every type of traveler. For example, which is the best for couples, best for party people, best for people who want a quieter vacation, best for singles, best for those over 30 years old, best for solo travelers, for families with kids etc.
We’re heading to Majestic Elegance in February, glad to see it popped up on here. Between last trip and this one, I’ve spent about 80hrs in research on blogs and websites like trip advisor combing through reviews and photos, the majestic resorts seem to consistently please everyone. This will be my second time there and I had next to zero complaints about Elegance. Property was beautiful, the staff was amazing, and the food was actually really good. My only complaint was the room AC. It kicks off periodically, purposely to cycle, even at night. It never got hot but it also had a hard time keeping up with the humidity so things were a bit damp. Aside from that, it was a great stay. Good enough to go back again.
I stayed at the Riu Republica in 2019 which was 2 years after they had opened, and I paid $150 Canadian per night, and I’d honestly have to agree with you. It is a great hotel, with INSANE value, amazing drinks, respectable food (LOTS of choices… close to 10 restaurant if my memory serves me), the service was outstanding and they made you feel at home! Also I’ve stayed at many all inclusive resorts, and the republics it by far has the best beach Ive ever been to. Also they give you 4 bottles in your room that you can help yourself too. The mini bar, and liquor bottles are restocked every two days, but if you call down to the lobby they will stick it daily btw! I can’t recommend it enough!
Glad you liked the Azul. I had commented previously about the disappointing food at Excellence El Carmen, in comparison to your experience at Excellence Punta Cana. I mentioned Karisma Hotels and Resorts, and that I have always found their food very good to great. Looking forward to your comments about Margaritaville. Cheers!
Just found and started perusal your articles and like your style and content!\r Kindly asking for your advise:\r Wife and I 55 & 56 and planning another out of the U.S. beach vacation for seven to ten days surrounding our 35th anniversary April 1, 2023.\r We have been to Negril Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Isla Verde Puerto Rico, Aruba and often go to Hollywood Beach Florida US.\r We generally fly Southwest using points, yes we are price conscience.\r Thinking about Punta Cana after perusal your articles.\r We go to quietly relax and want calm clean beaches and to eat good food but do not drink. Wife needs reasonably close walk to the beach.\r We would be grateful for you advice.
Thanks for your insight. We stayed at Majestic Mirage in 2019 and enjoyed the restaurants. I have some super picky eaters and we managed to find something every night. We’re considering going back but the beach full of seaweed is a definite turn off tho. Do you have any thoughts on the IberostarGrand Bavaro?.
Thanks for your article !! But as me, is a mistake to put Bahia Ambar on 14 … I dont know what are looking for but Ambar has a lot of Restaurants a la carte like Portofino and Brazilian, Argentinian, Meat where the food awesome !! Also the beach is wonderful ! I like to stay through the palms at the beach with natural wood umbrella.. not to a very nice beach.. and Ambar has this place at the beach.. 👆👍
Love this article. Have you stayed at Barcelo Bavaro in Punta Cana? Or Grand Bavaro Princess? I’d like to see how they compare to your list. Barcelo was the BEST resort i’ve ever stayed at. The food was the best quality i’ve ever had. The property was great but not the best i’ve seen. Drinks were good. Beach was good. Pools were good. Constantly playing latin music which made it way more fun. Stayed at Grand Bavaro Princess this past January. Restaurants were really good, buffet was pretty good, but not great. Drinks were not the best i’d ever had – they were all sugar syrups mixed with liquor, way too sweet and tasted fake. Opted for the VIP package and honeymoon suite and got THE best ocean front view…better than the view you showed in your article. The property was super nice, the design and decor was super high end and chic. Beach was very nice.
Wait until you stay in Sanctuary Cap Cana – get a room in the bottom floor of the castle 1. DJ and Swim up bar at the main pool 2. Best food I’ve had in any resort 3. You get a butler who takes care of everything you need, you can even text them 4. The decor is great, makes you feel like a king 5. Drinks are fantastic The worse thing about it is the beach, probably the worse beach in any hotel, but I didn’t even care lol
Love this review! I’m SO torn and due to fly out in 11 days!! Please help!! I have both the Dreams Onyx hotel and the Royalton Bavaro swim up rooms booked but need to release 1 booking! We’re looking for: – Great modern, clean sumptuous swim up room – Huge resort with lots to do – Large water park with a water park for kids, a wave pool and lazy river – Night / day shows and entertainment – Good food with lots of restaurants – It needs to be aesthetically gorgeous for my husband and I, yet an absolute blast for my 2yr old! If there’s a completely different hotel that I’m missing, please do let me know! Xx
I am surprised about making Excellence the number one property in Punta Cana especially when it has 1000 terrible/poor reviews on Trip Advisor. I stayed with my wife just after they renovated the hotel and they stripped away all of the old-world Dominican charm with the updates, the food was just average however I recall a number of people saying they felt they had food poisoning and were sick. The one thing I will never forget is that we had a room on the first floor and at the end of the hall was a storage room and there were two employees I observed refilling premium liquor bottles with inferior liquor! I can confirm that because I exclusively drink Bombay Sapphire and what they were pouring at the pool bar was not that.
Thank you for pointing out details for all these resorts. Some things you’re saying however, are a bit questionable. Like-“the pools at this resort were very average” and yet your showing a picture of a GORGEOUS pool. So perhaps you’re talking about a party-scene pool vibe which to me would go the the very bottom of my list. I don’t recall you saying what qualifies as #1 worthy. You also said RIU was #2 and yet you listed several negatives which leads me to believe you’re extremely picky or are just used to extreme high end. Having said all that, folks, don’t go to Punta Cana, go to Cap Cana (private community)and stay at the brand new beautiful Hyatt!!!!!!! It’s better than all 14 of these reviewed! Two resorts to have fun at right next door to each other. The Zilora side is adults only and the Ziva side is for all. 12 restaurants and 14 bars between the two locations. Underground cave-like spa, including a huge salt cave! ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!
We just got back from our stay at Majestic Excellence. Find hotel but something to keep in mind. My son wasn’t feeling well when we arrived. Had a sore throat and a headache. We finally went to a clinic to get him PCR tested for Covid. He tested positive. I tested negative. We were worried we wouldn’t be able to leave the hotel two days later when the hotel tested us. They tested us the morning we were leaving and he tested negative, as I did. When we got home we immediately tested ourselves. I tested negative and he tested positive. So he did another test. Positive again. I don’t think the test they do are accurate. So every test he did in the week before we left was positive except for the one the hotel tested have one. Must be something fishy
We are at hard rock punta cana at the moment and it is beeing renovated, it is not clean at all, fire alarms are going on at night, customer service is not good or helpful at all, not even answering phones at certain times, without tips in restaurants, pools etc you are not visible at all, food is average, ladies serving coffee or ice cream are so bored and unfriendly that you are better without that, people are very lazy, doing minimum job they should do. You can not walk around the property relaxed because there are golf cars and other cars driving around all the time so you have to be very careful. Also tourist renting them and driving around at night time after having few drinks does not feel safe… Evening shows are good, if you like things like that. Michael Jackson was the best. Beach is stunning, one of the nicest I ever been to,but watch out the people with animals as they will put a monkey on you without asking permission and want you to pay lots of money for it. Casino is great if you into it, but they are not friendly there at all, we were playing together with my husband and had only one players card so they would only give us one drink and not two. Even if is all inclusive hotel so we all should get drinks at any time. Probably if you tip enough you would get the second drink. But seriously tipping for every meal, drink at the pool, at casino, towels, room cleaner etc will make your holiday so much more expensive…and why it should be like that? It is some kind of akward thing going on with those tips.
DR is much better and Im Mexican myself the people are so much better in the DR and I am able to drive around the country with no incidents Mexico cops they ask for cash and if you dont give it to them you go to jail, DR they ask and it u dont give it to them they let you go. The DR MOPC is across the whole country to help you if you have any car issues, they changed my flat tire for free at 3am in the middle of nowhere
I stayed in dreams punta cana . Beach was dirty and the food was very bad . For 4 days never had a fresh bakery or bread . everything was tasteless really . I just didn’t like the Dominican Republic . The weather is good, people are very nice and friendly ( don’t like they expect tips, in U.K. we do t really tip ) only Saona island was good . Otherwise nowhere to go and is just an overpriced sh!thole 🤷♀️
Speaking as someone who has lived in the country over a decade….Lots of great info in this article. But if you really want to experience the beauty of Punta Cana, don’t stay on a resort! There are thousands and thousands of beautiful condos, apartments or villas where you can stay completely safely and comfortably. And right on the same beaches next to the resorts, but with much better value for your money. You can even hire a personal chef and pay far less than a resort to get authentic food. Or if you feel you MUST stay on a resort, maybe plan a day or 2 where you get off the resort. The authentic local experience is MUCH better than the resort experience. Great food, great people and lots to do. Great places to go dancing with locals at night if you are into dancing and good music. Lots of cool shops where you can go buy inexpensive goods and negotiate good prices. Even the costs of the excursions or tours are much cheaper off of the resort. As much as half price!! You won’t experience any of this if you just stay on the resort doing the same thing everyday. Resorts are cool sometimes, but if you only stay on a resort in every country, when do you ever actually experience the authenticity of the countries you visit??
As a Dominican that was there less than a month ago, you are on point. Negociate, bring singles, feel free to get out and explore around pubta cana, etc.. also, reserve, now there are a methodology thats all inclusives are using, the reservation to each specific restauran from the first minute you check in. You are accurate. Thank you for making these articles very helpful for tourists around the world!
Thank you so much for mentioning about tipping. Here in my country and specifically in Punta Cana, most of the monthly salary is roughly 600 dollars or 30,000 pesos a month. Punta cana is more expensive to live than almost everywhere else in the country. So those tips really do help us a lot in the end! Thank you!!
Thank you for sharing these insightful ‘don’ts’ for Punta Cana! As someone who has visited this stunning destination, I can attest to the importance of being mindful of these tips. It’s crucial to respect the local culture, avoid excessive bargaining, and be cautious with the local wildlife. By following these guidelines, we can ensure a more enjoyable and responsible travel experience. Your article serves as a valuable resource for anyone planning a trip to Punta Cana. Keep up the great work! Greetings from 🇧🇷
Thank you so much you are the best me and my wife are traveling there from the 12th to the 16th of June I’m going to have some dental work done I really appreciate all the tips to give me we’re going to go to Santo Domingo p I did stay before in punta Cana we loved it God bless your family you have a beautiful family
Amazing article. Im dominican living in the US. Always look forward to revisiting Bavaro. But I can help to mentiones Royalton Resort tricked me with their deceptive Diamond club plan. I paid them but they wont let me reserve a short stay. You have 1000 of hotel to pick from and have an amazing time. I HAVE Been to 5 in Punta cana. Have fun. All the people who work to serve you at the resorts are usually honest people.
Love perusal your articles But please slow down when your talking. You really talk fast really enjoy seeing and perusal but wow you really get a lot of info in a short article Please 🙏 keep them coming cause your very informative and my partner and I well let’s just say you sold us on Punta Cana . Great article!!❤
I have never booked my transportation to my resort when traveling to Punta Cana. I do pay the airport porters to handle my luggage and find that I always get moved to the front of the line when arriving. I have even been moved ahead of other people who were waiting to have their luggage x-rayed. I find this to be an easy to get through the rush because these porters arrange my taxi and take me right to the vehicle that will take me to my resort. It may be intimidating the first time you do this, but it is very easy as long as you understand that things work by giving people who help you tips when you are in the Dominican Republic. When I consider what my income is compared to what the average service worker earns in the Dominican, it is worth the few dollars it costs me to get good service all the time. Another advantage of taking a taxi as opposed to the buses is that you will usually beat the rush and get to your resort and have an easy and relaxed check in.
Statement followed by a Question… years ago, while visiting Cancun, my family did not drink the water, but we ate salad, which I guess had been washed in the regular water. Our entire family was sick for four or five days which just about ruined the vacation. Is it the same way in Punta Cana? Should I stay away from anything that could be washed in the water? Great article and Thanks.!
Go there every winter usually to Casa de Campo so large you need to rent a car do not rent a car from the airport do it at the resort you will spend hours and not get the car you reserved The VIP is expensive they pick you up in a golf cart right from the airplane through the lines are long. I’ve never waited more than a half an hour during Covid I did VIP.
Asking folks who have been to Punta Cana recently… in 2019 we went and stayed at the “Excellence Resort”. We paid over 5k for 10 days without taking part in the resort’s “upgraded” portion of the resort. Now we are used to 5 ⭐️ Mexico resort type of resort. The Excellence too was rated 5 ⭐️. We would like to check out a different resort next time. What is your favorite 🤩 resort that takes 5 🌟 to the moon??
Hi Mark! So excited that you’re at Barcelo Bavaro Palace because that’s where we’re headed next month. Do you have any advice for this resort now that you’re already there? Is it worth it to upgrade to premium? We have two boys (4, 7) so not sure if upgrading is worth it. Any advice or tips and tricks for this particular property is appreciated.
Just got home from Punta Cana. This dude nailed it 100%. I forgot to bring Neosporen and had to pay $12 for a tube of off brand lol. Also ran out of singles and had to use atm and couldnt find change for my Pesos for days. And the one thing he didnt mention.. a $1 or $2 tips is a LOT for them. So you dont have to tip much at all!
I am giving away a secret here but if you want to avoid that seaweed sargassum that plagues many caribbean beaches especially punta cana stay on the caribbean south coast in bayahibe dominicus beach instead of punta cana because thier almost no seaweed there and the water is more turquoise and clear and you are a lot closer to saona island and the tours are much cheaper from there. I always stay on the caribbean south coast when i go to the DR now and you have great resorts there also like the catalonla la romana and the hilton la romana.
When I went to Punta Cana I had the BEST vacation I ever had. Stayed at an ALL inclusive resort. It had everything I ever wanted. Didn’t do excursions as I had no reason to leave. The night entertainment was top notch and different every night. The Live bands were awesome. The service at the beach shoreline was also top notch and I tipped my waiters accordingly during your visit. Airport, customs, taxi was seamless. Now the bug spray and sunblock, confiscated at the US airport. The only item I purchased at the resort was sunblock. I did go during the off season so not busy at all BUT some ladies wear worldwide clothes seller had their convention during the same time I was their and boy was I treated to some of the most beautiful women from all over the world, they had themes for every days wear 🤪🤪🤪 and since it was an ADULT all inclusive topless/bottomless was visible throughout. That is why I never left the resort for excursions. Looking forward for my next visit. With the airfare, resort, taxi, and plenty of $1 bills for7 days turned out to be an inexpensive high class outing. Goodness 🍒🍑🌮🍆
We go there every year and have an amazing time. One thing I have definitely learned is to bring the singles.!!!!!! I spend about $500 in tip for a week stay and we are treated like royalty every time. We love this place so much that we stay at the same resort year in and year out. The people are beautiful and humble can’t wait to go back in October.
Coming from someone that has lived on this island over 5 years I hardly ever stay at a resort. To go to a resort is not like being in the Dominican Republic. Have I been to resorts in Punta Cana before yes. Do I make it a habit to stay at a resort absolutely not. Always watch where you exchange your currency for pesos. Always check on goggle for the current exchange rate. If you go to a grocery store in Punta Cana they will buy your currency but at drastic rate reduction. For example the current exchange rate for today is 5875 pesos for $100.00 that same grocery store is only paying 5400 pesos for $100.00 be careful not to flash a lot of cash or jewelry. And be aware that most things are for sale on this island, just everything is not legal.
Wait, you give them ‘tips’ but haggle with prices??? Wow. So I’m from a country where they pay a livable wage. That is, we don’t subsidize wages for cheap employers. Are workers in the DR exploited like in the USA? As for haggle part, I’m not much of a fan of this. I feel that the people doing the haggling is why they need tips. Seems convoluted. Thanks for the advice though. I’ll be there in a few weeks.
1. I’ve just arrived on holiday and have to worry about booking a table! 2. You can’t go outside the resort unless it’s on a tour as it’s not safe 3. There is ZERO things to see in Punta Cana.. it’s a rubbish part of the island where they built a bunch of hotels. 4. Seaweed Seaweed Seaweed 5. Tips! They all want tips 24/7 so what’s the point of all inclusive when your paying $2 a drink each time! 6. Beach water is average at best.. it’s not crystal clear it’s semi clear… lots and lots of seaweed… YOU WILL SEE IT FLYING IN OUT AT SEA!
We travel often and a little trick I do when showering is place a good amount of mouthwash in my mouth and hold it in there. That way I wont open my mouth and possibly infect myself. If I do accidentally open my mouth the germ killing mouthwash will “hopefully” kill anything that snuck in. 😊 Maybe its overkill but ecoli is not fun–Trust me. 😢😂
Wow, I’m a New Yorker and I’ve lived in PC for nearly 2 years, and this fella is basically advising people how to not really experience the city. Firstly he says that almost all accommodations are all inclusive resorts, but a ton of people get awesome condos on Airbnb and the like. I found it to be more enjoyable and you get way more bang for your buck. Also, he seems to discourage folks from leaving the resort and experiencing the local culture. Also, super super wrong. There are tons of cool places to go, great restaurants to eat at..etc. If you go to PC and all you do is stay at a resort and maybe go on a few excursions with bus loads of tourists, you have not experienced Punta Cana or the Dominican Republic. Oh, and never take the official taxis. Uber is waaaaay cheaper.
We just got back last week and stayed at the majestic mirage. The food was horrible. we got eaten alive by mosquitos or sand flies, ugh! My husband was approached by several men at the beach, offering him drugs and prostitutes 🤬 the restors, including the hard rock, the area was super underdeveloped, trash all over the roads, dirty people are nice not all of them, never again …go to Jamaica, other islands and quintana roo mexico (cancun, isla mujeres, holbock, akumal, cozumel ) way better and safer
I wouldnt agree with you Wolter. Why is it need to book meal? You can have delicious meal for 150 peso.(3-4$) everywhere. Tap water is safe. It might not be tasty, but it is absolutely safe. I drank tap water for 3 weeks in different places. No problem at all. If you get to mountain rivers and springs fill up your bottles. This water is much more tasty than bottled water. Public transport, motocycles, different gaugas are absolutely safe if you know where to go.. Big cities seems to be criminal at night time, but small cities are absolutely safe at night time. Sun protection is useless, why do you need to bake yourself in sun? I was a month in Dominicana, i didnt have any sunburn, however I am blond and I spent many hours every day near Caribean sea relaxing and swimming
PUNTA CANA is an awful place to go on holiday! I went there last year for 15 nights and it’s just bland and boring. You can only go off site as part of a package because it’s not safe otherwise.. and if you do go off site there’s nothing of interest in the Punta Cana area.. things like the Coco Bongo area are filled with crime and that whole side of the island is just pop up resorts.. The beaches have a huge seaweed problem in that area..
