The Princess Bride, a 1987 film based on a 1973 novel, tells a classic fairy tale with swordplay, giants, an evil prince, a beautiful princess, and some kissing. Directed by Rob Reiner and written by William Goldman, the movie features quotes from the novel that encapsulate a unique and perhaps cynical view of life. Life is pain, highness, and anyone who says otherwise is selling something.
One memorable quote from the movie is “Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something.” Buttercup, indignant at being mocked by Westley, reminds him that death cannot stop true love. The Man In Black, ready to slap Buttercup, warns her not to do it again. Inigo Montoya, in particular, praises Westley for doing something right.
The Princess Bride is one of the most quotable movies of all time, with Westley’s lines being some of the very best. The tale of the enchanting world featured in the film is like a dreamland to fantasy fiction fans. The quotes depict the magic, combined with adventure and romance, creating an unbeatable team that blows the mind of viewers.
The 1980’s silver screen adaptation of William Goldman’s classic captures the story of a farmboy-turned-pirate who encounters numerous obstacles, enemies, and allies in his quest to be reunited with his true love. True love is the best thing in the world, except for cough drops.
In summary, The Princess Bride is an enchantingly cracked fairy tale where the beautiful Princess Buttercup and the dashing Westley must overcome staggering odds to find happiness amid six-fingered swordsmen.

Why is Princess Bride so popular?
The originality of The Princess Bride made it hard to sell. Kaufman’s work shows that breaking the rules can yield something beautiful. This brings us to William Goldman, whose Adventures in the Screen Trade provides a counterweight to Robert McKee’s Story. Artists often think their work is the result of genius, but it’s often the result of method. Most popular songs follow a similar structure: verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus. Most magic tricks have three parts: the trick, the reveal, and the wow factor. Most paintings and photos follow the rule of thirds or the golden ratio. Most books and movies have a traditional structure. Most of our entertainment is like bridges: They succeed or fail based on how well they’re structured. In movie making, there are two main texts. One is Story by Robert McKee. He believes most movies tell stories that have been told before, and there are certain industry specifications that novice screenwriters must learn. McKee teaches his storytelling methods in workshops and seminars. More than 100,000 people have attended them around the world, including sixty future Academy Award winners. Those figures add up to a grim statistic. McKee’s seminar attendees have a 0.0006% chance of winning an Oscar. The story is full of lessons written in bold type.

What is the classic blunder quote from The Princess Bride?
Man in Black: All right. Where’s the poison? The battle of wits has begun. It ends when you decide and we drink and find out who is right. Vizzini: It’s simple. I just have to know if you’d put poison in your own goblet or your enemy’s. A clever man would put the poison in his own goblet because he knows only a fool would reach for it. I’m not a fool, so I can’t choose the wine. But you knew I wasn’t a fool, so you’d counted on it. I can’t choose the wine in front of me. Man in Black: You’ve made your decision? Vizzini: Not at all. Iocane comes from Australia, where everyone knows criminals are. Criminals are used to people not trusting them. You are not trusted by me, so I can’t choose the wine in front of you. You’re very clever. Wait till I get going! Now, where was I? Australia. Yes, Australia. You must have thought I knew the powder’s origin. I can’t choose the wine in front of me. You’re just stalling. You’d like to think that, wouldn’t you? You beat my giant, so you’re strong. You could have put the poison in your own goblet, trusting your strength to save you. I can’t choose the wine in front of you. But you’ve also beaten my Spaniard, so you must have studied and learned that man is mortal. You would have put the poison as far from yourself as possible, so I can’t choose the wine in front of me. You’re trying to trick me. It won’t work. Vizzini: It worked! You’ve given it all away! I know where the poison is! Then choose. Vizzini: I will, and I choose… What is it? Vizzini gestures up and away from the table. The Man in Black looks back. Vizzini switches the goblets. What? Where? I don’t see anything. I thought I saw something. But no matter. Vizzini tries to hold back laughter. Man in Black: What’s so funny? Vizzini: I’ll tell you later. Let’s drink. Me from my glass, and you from yours. Vizzini and the Man in Black drink. Man in Black: You guessed wrong. You think I guessed wrong! That’s funny! I switched glasses when you weren’t looking! Ha! You fool! You made a classic mistake. The most famous is “never get involved in a land war in Asia.” Another is: Don’t go against a Sicilian when it’s a matter of life and death! Ha ha! Ha ha! Vizzini stops suddenly and falls to the ground dead. The Man in Black removes the blindfold from Buttercup’s head. Are you okay? Buttercup: And you thought it was your cup that was poisoned. They were both poisoned. I built up immunity to iocane powder.
Inigo Montoya: I won’t kill you until you reach the top. That’s comforting, but you’ll just have to wait. I hate waiting. I’m a Spaniard. No good. I know too many Spaniards. Can’t I trust you? Nothing comes to mind. Inigo Montoya: I swear on my father’s soul, you’ll make it to the top. Throw me the rope.
Inigo Montoya: Could you go faster? If you’re in a hurry, you could lower a rope or find something useful to do. I can do that. I have rope, but you’ll kill me if I help. Man in Black: That’s a bummer.

The novel ends with Inigo’s wounds opening up again while he is on the run from the Brute Squad, leaving his future unclear.
📹 life is pain
“Life is pain, highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something.” William Goldman – Princess Bride.
As someone who actually never seen this movie before, I can’t deny how much this quote works alongside the human condition. I think one of the trickiest parts of our experience is getting over the bargaining stage of grief for the existence of a perfect world. If we’re unable to accept the unforgiving world, we can become really susceptible to charlatans who seem to have the answer to all of our problems (interesting thing is that I came to this thought amidst my initial question on why the risk factors for drug addiction and falling for a cult seem to be so similar).
