Does Mary ever get married?
The Marriage of the Virgin is a Christian art subject showing the marriage of Mary and Joseph. The wedding ceremony is not in the Gospels, but in other books. This scene isn’t on the church calendar like the Nativity of Mary and Presentation of Mary. But it has been in the past. In the Eastern Orthodox tradition, the scene is about the Entrusting of Mary to Joseph. Joseph is made Mary’s guardian by the temple authorities. Artists often depicted the betrothal of Mary with Joseph’s blossoming rod, even though it was an apocryphal story. The wedding procession may also be shown, especially in the early Middle Ages. Giotto’s famous fresco cycle in the Scrovegni Chapel covers the story in four scenes. In the later Middle Ages and Renaissance, the betrothal and marriage were often shown together. The disappointed suitors held their bare rods or snapped them.
