He said that this is most obvious in the taboo surrounding men in skirts. Some celebrities, like Brad Pitt and Russell Westbrook, wear skirts to red carpet events. I totally agree with godfrey on giving gay roles to gay black actors. I always found that odd how the straight brothas gotta get into character for that type of role instead of them casting an actual gay black actor that can pull it off better anyway. Same with Transgender. if there is a Trangender character then let one of that community do it. seek them out. Its like if the black straight men aint playing gay roles they are playing Villain’s a lot of the time
Denzel is a different Breed you can’t be him unless you have the skill to walk the walk. From what I read about Denzel is he doesn’t even communicate with Hollywood outside of his role. His family has zero connections with his work. He shows up at party’s for the meeting aspect and leaves. The guy pretty much comes to work dose his thing and heads back to the bat cave till he gets another part. It even said he gets mad if you group him in with the Hollywood crowds.
At the opening credits to Martin’s sitcom. The first thing you see is him playing his mother and Sheneneh. When on the very first season, he portrays three other characters (Bob, Otis, Dragon Fly Jones) almost more than strictly those two especially in the next season. How come those other characters weren’t highlight than his female editions.
I freakin love Godfrey 😂😂🤣 Dude is hilarious and speaking the truth!!! Bro should’ve been so much more famous, in so more many roles, his character, his person is amazing, but because of his unwillingness to destroy his manhood, he is not played in those roles! Bro picked his soul over money and fame. Godbless him!
Why is it that he ignores all the prominent white actors that get put in dresses to make it big. At the height of his career Robin Williams played an old woman. Dustin Hoffman. Alec Guiness before playing Obi Wan. Michael Jackson Fox. John Travolta. Pat Swayze had to do it alongside Snipes and Leguizamo, Jerry Lewis. Goes back as far as Charlie Chaplin. Huge white stars put in dresses.
This guy is way off. Men have been cross dressing in media since Greek theatre and Shakepeare’s Globe. White actors have cross dressed since the inception of Hollywood: Charlie Chaplin, Milton Berle, Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, Jim Carey, Tom Hanks, Peter Scolari, Robin Williams, Dame Edna, Terrance Stamp, Guy Pearce, Nathan Lane, Patrick Swayze, Tim Curry, Rowan Atkinson, Anthony Perkins, Eddie Izzard, etc. I guess when white people do it, it’s acceptable, but it’s emasculating when black males do it? Besides, name the movie where Denzel Washington appears in drag?
Let me tell you a lil story me and Malik Yoba where born in the same hospital on the same day. For some reason I had always remembered the doctor calling Malik a hermaphrodite, it’s not till I got older that I learn that what he was saying that Malik yoba was half man half woman… hermaphrodite!!!! TK Kirkland..
My opinion but some people are missing two points that are standing out. When you have a movie where you have a black actor wearing a dress, it’s always been for the laugh. Whether it’s from superiority over the black man in society or to make it to the next level, it’s always been in humor from the white man’s screen writing or director. From Yoba, I believe he made it a point to create the character, whether it be fuuny or serious, from his experience which goes deeper than trying to be funny or to put down the black man. I understand Malik Yoba’s point that we come from both man and woman and we should treasure both sides. I can understand the other black actors who will not put on a dress because it’s always to make fun of the black actor from a white man’s perspective. I believe we need to find out where the role is coming from, whether for the humor from a white man or from the sincerity of a black man.
If these actors come up with the characters and have a vision of a character that they want to play and portray, why would they get someone else to do it? It’s the story They wanna tell, but of course the fear of black masculinity and sexual premise is always in the room. Most of us have enjoyed the Jamie Foxx and Martin female characters though, and I still watch the reruns. Tyler Perry’s characters are funny and also told the stories of the women in his family and I think it would be better for him to do it.
You have to realize who’s answering the question. The men who grew up with theater and went to theater school are willing to take ANY role, because it’s good to be versatile and they love acting so much they will take a role. Now, a man who didn’t grow up in theater, grew up in the streets, hard life till they were of age to move, or change their ways, and now they want to express themselves and try new ways of making money too, but they will NEVER take that gay/trans or women role. It’s based off of PRIDE, and as long as everyone is cool with their decisions, I say it’s cool then. Let everyone live how they want, we all reach the same destination in the end, chose your own path.
I believe Malik was trying to convey a message but got lost in the delivery. He is speaking of honoring both the masculine and feminine parts of his being (testosterone, estrogen) and being able to play those roles because he recognizes and honors the feminine part of him as well. That doesn’t translate to half man half woman but I do believe that was his intended point. …It’s an interesting perspective… But I also understand Godfrey’s Hell no & his reasons for it.
Eastside Low Bottoms shit ! I think in the beginning, i could see how Black men wearing dresses was meant to be funny because of the exaggeration…but amongst our OWN ! But now i think it’s to emasculate Us in the eyes of the broader society. DON’T DO IT ! No humiliation or amount of money is worth ur dignity ! Because whn that money is spent, ur STILL somewhere on “film” lookin’ crazy as fuck ! #RespectYourself
I agree with all the points he is struggling to make. I cringe at how inarticulate and historically naive he is. The youth of today have their own vernacular and slang but it does not serve them well when they become charged with emotion. They seem to lose their track of mind as when he calls Hattie McDaniel a “Mammy”. He says Denzel never took an insulting role but I remember perusal an episode of “Hill Street Blues” where he played a young Black thug who gets his ass beat in an alley by a cop until he’s laying in a pile of garbage snitching. Never have seen him in a dress though. I applaud this young mans stand, now it’s time to tune up expressing yourself more eloquently with the English language. Just my opinions, I could be wrong.
Godfrey is right. I seen ppl talking about Tyler Perry. But Tyler Perry is different . Cause he had complete control. He produced, directed, and wrote all of his stuff more important he OWN 100% of all his contents to plays, movies and shows. And build a empire …literally. I love some of his work and some I disliked. But he the only one who did it I think w/ a real moral behind it in his own way. When you have ownership of your stuff it’s different. I respect anyone tho who decline money cause it against there morals.
I guess I’m in the minority on this topic…simplistically, an actor’s job is literally pretending to be someone other than who they are and getting the audience to believe it. Most times, that requires the actor to wear some sort of costume/makeup for added authenticity. A serious actor should have no problems accepting a role just because they think the audience would not be able to separate the actual person from the character being portrayed…it’s all make believe, right?!!
