It is also important to consider important subsets when defining the domains. Consider potential confounding factors (linked with both exposure and outcome) when developing the registry. Collecting data on potential confounders allows for control. (See Chapters 3 and 13.) Variables that change over time must include a time reference to distinguish cause-and-effect relationships. A drug taken after an outcome is observed can’t have contributed to that outcome. Time reference periods can be addressed by including start and stop dates for variables that can change or by categorizing them.
