As a certified life coach, relationship coach, and dating coach, I want to make dating and relationships easier for you. I pray you …
I’m coming up on 3 weeks since I broke up with him and it’s been the ROUGHEST 3 weeks of my life. Some days I get through without crying, but most days I am inconsolable, depressed, and full of regret for breaking it off. I often just want to go back, but I really needed this message. I was not validated. I was blamed for the issues we were having, despite constantly reminding him that HIS actions started the issues. I need to remember that when I’m feeling weak and regretful.
This article is so timely. Because just last night we were talking and he was considering trying something I asked him to try with me. I’m so scared because I don’t feel like he has put in any real effort to be more than a friend who helps me pay the bills. He hasn’t leaned in. I have not felt prioritized. He’s literally said “nothing I do is good enough” just in the last week. He hasn’t tried to understand my needs and what makes me feel loved. I get lectured because I went be able to meet his needs. But I still asked him to try with me. To really lean in. It’s been over 22 years that we’ve been together and we have six kids together. I do miss what I wanted him to be. My partner, my friend, someone I feel close to and safe with. Someone who loves me as Christ loved the church. Self sacrifically. And I in turn would feel safe to do the same. But I get put down because I haven’t felt safe to bring him in and close. When I do it bites me in the ass. Dang it I wish you weren’t right. People like you say what a horrible spouse you were and that you came around so it gives me hope. But I’m wondering if you really were as I imagine. Because you took accountability and learned how to connect.
I just went through this myself. Broke off a 5-year relationship to a person that was my best friend for the 8 years prior to dating.. walking away from this relationship was very hard. But it was something that I needed to do for my mental well-being. The whole time in the relationship I was treated just like the best friend rather than the girlfriend. I just wasn’t getting out of it what I needed. So this article touched home it made me feel okay for the decision I had made❤…ty
Yep… recently been thru the questioning my decision to leave after 32 years of marriage. I had to start questioning my questions like… do i miss him or could i really just be lonely? He’s not a bad guy. But was he there for you? Etc… It’s daunting to “start over” at 62! First I had to allow myself to grieve and give myself GRACE where I felt I had failed & when my emotions became overwhelming & hard to control, I talked to the Dr & we changed my anti-depressant medication. So now, for me, it’s back to the basics: God, family, friends & learning to love myself bc “I am fearfully & wonderfully made” AND YOU ARE TOO~!! Keep up the good work Jimmy!
Thank you. So very much appreciated. My 21yr marriage is over and I’m managing the fallout for my 8 kiddoes and my absolutely broken-hearted inner child who has been ignored for many, many years. A divorce and financial settlement is upcoming and it’s been a year since we separated so I have forgotten what it’s like to be with him. But articles like this really validate and strengthen me. Thank you, Jimmy. I’m so grateful for you!
Really needed to hear this. The answer is ’no’ to all the questions. The loneliness and feeling unloved feels so familiar. Know I know it’s from past family trauma. That’s why I chose my husband. That’s what attracted me to him. The familiarity of being emotionally unavailable and not interested in putting in the effort in sustaining our marriage. Know I’m slowly letting go and accepting. ❤️
This is what’s going on right now with my spouse and I in our marriage…we’ve been temporarily separated for the past 3-4 months because of infidelity in our marriage and my spouse is willing to give me another chance, but I don’t feel anything towards him anymore and he’s been telling me that he NEEDS me to be happy and can’t live without me; he keeps talking about getting divorced and I swear… I should just give it to him because he keeps hanging on to hope that I’ll give in and change my mind and go back to him! We have kids together, but just because we have kids together doesn’t mean that I should stay with him. Sure, I loved him once, but my feelings have changed now! We’ve been in couples counseling trying to work out everything and nothing is changing!
I didn’t sleep well and woke up in tears about this exact issue and this was on my feed first when I went into YouTube to do a meditation. I can’t even tell you how much this is what I needed and feel less alone reading these comments(sending light to everyone who needs it). These words are so helpful to not keep repeating the cycle of abuse and doubting yourself. Even knowing all of this, everything in me wants to fix it to save my family, try to protect my children but they see this mistreatment and it’s also training them how to be boys/men in relationships. Is that what I want for them, to continue this cycle by reinforcing it’s ok because this is what love includes? I know the answer is no but there is so much mixed together fear that I’m trying to work through, like many others. I know that for myself and many, it’s not about jumping into another relationship but healing and going through a transformation so we aren’t attracted the same into our lives and that may include being single for a while, making peace with that. Let’s face it, Jimmy, the pool is not huge with guys who are like you and wish everyone (especially high school boys) watched you as much as they watch all of the entertainment and distractions on social media. I have to accept that being alone but healthy is better than dancing on the hot coals that are always there whether under the surface or through periodic mistreatment which is mixed with those glimpses and dreams (such a grieving process).
I needed to hear this so bad.. it is the right thing to do… I’m feeling better every day I’m far from him. I got neglected a LOT, never respected and very much blamed for everything. I let him break up with me around 30 times for the past 6 months, cuz i broke up with him for our own mental health back in February and we should’ve stayed this way. Going back only hurt me more and more and nothing changed, as I thought. I am mourning as you said most likely the person i knew he could’ve been, but he hasn’t been to me.. NEVER consistently… so i should be happy and move on. Getting there every day… thank you. This article game me what i needed tbh… ❤❤❤
I am forever grateful for you, your work, youe website and that I found this website !!! (Via TT) thank you, I truly needed to see this today. The fact that when I recently told my soon to be ex that he’s been “fighting” for us the past months but I’ve been fighting for us for 24yrs… he had nothing to say. Proves to me i am making the right decision (not that I needed convincing) I am doing my first meeting with a divorce lawyer tomorrow. Sending love and good wishes to everyone here ❤
Thank you for this article, I needed to hear this. Ive been married for 14 years, and every question was NO. Sad thing is still pressuring to get back together and to have counselling when I’ve asked for years. It’s only been 3 months separated, but it’s too late now. I can’t go back. I need time now to heal. Thanks jimmy, love you articles
I found you at the exact time I needed to hear ur advice, and was willing to see my role in things too. My question is this: what about when both people aren’t loving the other properly, don’t know how to, but are willing to learn to? Do we walk away and try with someone else where there isn’t all the damage that’s been done, or do we forgive and forget and then try to learn to be better for each other?
I walked away from an 8 year relationship with someone I loved very deeply after she had an affair. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do, because I greatly valued our relationship, and for a long time it was really really good. 8 months on, and it is starting to get easier, but the pain is still very much there.
I feel like sometimes I’m mouring the loss of a great relationship turned terrible while still in the relationship. I can’t unhear or unsee the hurtful things. It’s also hard to see he makes the time for a chiropractor but not even personal therapy for his mind..let alone couples therapy. Today is our anniversary I’m wondering if he will notice as I am the one who always makes plans.
I tried to break up with my partner but he yelled at me and I have verbal abuse trauma and after he calmed down, I buckled. I told him he had until my actual move-out date to “fight for me” but I’m not convinced five months will undo four years of hurt from not feeling valued. I’m wondering if this article is telling me I shouldn’t change my mind
How do I know if it’s me or him?? I feel like I’m not being prioritized. Just about everything comes before me and he says “he can’t” love me in the ways that I need because he doesn’t understand. But what if I’m just ungrateful?! What if I’m TOO SPECIFIC and what if no one can ever truly fulfill my laundry list of needs??? I legitimately am concerned that I’m just too needy. How do I know where I need to draw my own lines and say “lady, you’re getting plenty”??
I’m on the other side of this, I UNINTENTIONALLY was ignorant and selfish and I have realised this. He has tried a lot to communicate, but I was so focused on anger. I realised and now I have a second chance, we put our emotions aside and this time we thought about it logically and hence he decided to give me a chance. I need tip on how to rebuilt his trust and how I can work on myself . PLEASE HELP. I’ve started and he is appreciative but I still am along way, however I don’t wanna hurt him, so can you tell me how I can deal with anger and emotions?
YES. My ex still acts like we are a couple (the lowest effort imaginable) and he future fakes me often. He wants us to build a country home together but he doesn’t want therapy no matter how much I begged. I felt unhappy with the trauma bonding he was accoustuned to with women and that we experienced together. I have never felt so off balance.
Question: What if they ask for a last chance and work hard to be with u without letting go? Complete broken taking all the accountability and admitting to being blind and stupid while apologising daily and promising to become even better because they realise your worth? Do i jst ignore all that? Or? The relationship did make me feel lonely and neglected, but it wasnt all dark and gloom. From what i gathered, i was taken for granted because they were future focused and didnt know how to deal with my depression/anxiety while dealing with their Pride/Selfishness. So?
my husband yells at me when there is a little to no mistake from my side…sometimes he might be right because i do make mistakes…. but i asked him if he can change the tone of how he yells or scolds then he replied it is possible only if i give him a baby..should i bare with him until he changes or what should i do?
He tries in big things, puts effort. Literally coming to meet me in two months, he’s working SO HARD to gather the money but at the same time, he makes me feel like such a stranger and we lost our connection, he’s not emotionally available. But he sometimes tries but most of the time im so blank like i dont have anyone it’s.. confusing idk what to do
But…what if I feel like I am the “bad guy”, this person gives me everything I want but I’m not trying hard enough to do the same for him and I don’t even know why am I like that but I Just can’t find the motivation and energy to do it. I think he deserves more. And he always gives me another chance but if I were him I would not do this for his own good. I’ve never been in a situation like this, can somenone help?
We have been dating for six months; however, I caught her staring at men (more than once) in a way that I felt cheated. She is Christian, which bothers me the most because she’s not honoring the bible, which she reads every night. When I caught her staring, she admitted to it and said it was because she thought he/them were cute. She apologized and would like to fix things, but I don’t see her the same.
I think you talk about divorce way too much on your website. Divorce needs to be the last resort. Often couples can change and work things out it does take time to heal wounds. It does depend upon the situation, whatever it may be. There is still hope and I believe in change and repentance. I get it my parents are divorced and that was a good thing for me and my family because there was so much abuse that went on for 19 years. Knowing that you are strong enough to do hard things and through Christ all things are possible. Know that you are loved.
I certainly agree with you. We are talking about God’s wisdom. Letting God do what he does oh so well we can’t go wrong. God also gives us common sense to know when you need to walk away and don’t look back. I agree the cheating is a blessing 1 King 2: 19 tells us They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us;; but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
I do agree with this. I don’t think people are bad. I feel people can be unaware of their own actions and behavior. How someone reacts to physical harm is understandable and unfortunate. When I really looked at the relationship, this person was controlling. The harm wasn’t just physical but emotional. You could see that this person’s life has been hurt so much. That now this person will hurt other’s when they are upset and does not understand common sense. It was like everything was being blamed on me and that this person couldn’t look in the mirror. The relationship was toxic but this one hasn’t understood you cannot control another. This person blocked me and cannot look at themselves in the mirror. This person even controlled me upon what hairstyle she wants a male to have, this person also was controlling to not accept all of me for who I am, physical appearance wise. This person wanted me to be the guy of their dreams, not they guy who I am. I always make improvements upon myself, if I am in or out of a relationship. I still had this person’s number in my phone when I looked at the whole relationship they did not deserve a second chance. They really did try to control me towards everything they wanted. Not what a guy should be. So thanks for this article, getting validation for what this person showed me. For sure it was a blessing that I got out of it.
