The Ancient Magus Bride OVAs are an optional and non-canon addition to the manga, occurring sometime into the story. They are recommended for viewers to watch in the middle of the first 24-episode season, as they are too related to the main characters, Chise Hatori. The first OVA series, Those Awaiting a Star, was released first and explores Chise’s childhood, so it can be watched before the anime seasons.
The recommended watch order for The Ancient Magus Bride is the first half of season 1, then Those Awaiting a Star, then the rest of season 1, then Boy from the West, and Knight of the Blue Storm. The release order offers a comprehensive viewing experience, allowing viewers to witness the complexities and charms of the series.
To round out the exploration of The Ancient Magus Bride universe, it is recommended to watch Steins;Gate 0, a related series that offers a complementary storyline to the events of the main series. By immersing oneself in this interconnected narrative, one can gain a more comprehensive understanding of the overarching themes and experiences.
Based on personal experience and the chronological timeline of the story, it is best to watch the first 24 episodes of the main series before diving into the OVAs. The OVAs are worth a watch for anyone impatient waiting for the shows, as they provide a better gauge of the series’ core themes.
As long as Season 1 is watched before Season 2 starts airing, the OVAs and other media can be watched at your own pace. The first OVA series, Those Awaiting a Star, was released first and explores Chise’s childhood, so it can be watched before the anime.

📹 The Ancient Magus’ Bride Those Awaiting a Star OVA Review
After the stunning first episode of The Ancient Magus’ Bride this previous weekend. I had to watch The Ancient Magus’ Bride …
Also, as someone who has not only bought all of the officially translated volumes of the manga in English, but also all of the manga volumes in Japanese, thus as a huge fan of the series, and as a huge Celtic folklore nerd, I’m really looking forward to your seeing your experience perusal the series through your weekly reviews. ^^XD
I’m really impressed with the story they were able to tell in just 3 OVA’s. I was so sad about the librarian, since he was probably my favorite character (still love Chise, I just prefer the librarian a little more). I am so excited to watch the rest of this series. Definitely anime of the season, and possible anime of the year.
I know I’m late to this party but I just watched the OVAs and the first twelve episodes because Semblance of Sanity has started reacting to it. I have to say that the only problem with perusal the OVAs first or early into the series is that there is a character who the OVAs treat as if we are already familiar with him when he doesn’t show up until episode 8. So for the 1st 7 episodes I spent the whole time waiting for him to be introduced.
