Was Brida Born A Saxon?

Brida, born in East Anglia to an Anglo-Saxon family, was taken captive during the Great Heathen Army’s invasion of England in 866. She was adopted and raised alongside Uhtred by the Dane warlord Ragnar after he sacked their village and killed their parents. Brida grew close to Uhtred and became his playmate, close friend, and first lover.

Brida was also born Saxon but grew up as a Dane. Like Uhtred, she never considered becoming a Saxon again. She grew up alongside Ragnar’s biological children, Thyra and Ragnar the Younger, who valued the Danish religion and way of life. Both Saxon children saw Ragnar as their own father.

The Last Kingdom is a historical series set in ninth and tenth century England, focusing on Uhtred of Bebbanburg, a Saxon warrior who swore to serve King Alfred. The show is an adaptation of Bernard Cornwell’s best-selling series of historical novels known as The Saxon Stories.

As Uhtred seeks to claim his ancestral birthright, Brida vehemently hates Saxons and never considers becoming a Saxon again. She is a free-spirited Saxon who embraces her Danish identity, but it would have been interesting to see her reconcile her hatred for Saxons and take back some of her identity as one.

In summary, Brida, a Saxon girl born in East Anglia, is a character in the historical series The Last Kingdom, where she is raised by the Danes and Uhtred, a Saxon warrior. Despite her Saxon heritage, Brida’s character is fascinating to watch and her allegiances are tested when Uhtred swore to serve King Alfred.

Is Father Beocca based on a real person?

This fictional story is interesting, but it’s not as interesting as the real people in this story. There’s Father Beocca in “The Last Kingdom.” He may be fictional, but there was a real Father Beocca who was Alfred the Great’s spiritual mentor and died a martyr. He was made a saint of the Church. I always set my clicker to “stun” when I watch religious people in popular entertainment. Especially if they’re priests. I brace myself for priests who are evil, buffoons, or rebels who deny Church teachings. The Last Kingdom makes me think of Father Beocca. He’s not innocent. He isn’t corrupt. He must help Alfred become the king God wants, not just the man he is at the start of the series. Alfred is also shown in different ways. He tries to be good but often does bad things. Father Beocca helps him build up again.

Did Ragnar Ragnarson exist?

Ragnar Ragnarsson is the son of Earl Ragnar the Fearless, but he is not based on a real person. Ragnar Lothbrok is a character in the History Channel series Vikings. He is inspired by the real Ragnar Lothbrok, who is mentioned in Old Norse poetry and Icelandic sagas. Ragnar Lothbrok had sons who led the Great Heathen Army, including Ivar the Boneless and Bjorn Ironside. The Ragnar in The Last Kingdom is a fictional character created by Cornwell.

Was Brida originally a Saxon?

Like Uhtred, she is Saxon and is adopted by the Danes after they see her village destroyed by Vikings. She also loves the Danes for being free-spirited. Young Cnut and his brother Esgar run through the woods, taking cover behind trees. Brida captures Cnut and holds a knife to his throat. She asks if he wants her to show him mercy. He nods. She says mercy is for Christians and that the only thing to do when captured by the enemy is to kill yourself. Cnut joins them. He says the boys like Brida. The women of East Anglia go to the settlements for the winter. They must be hidden while the men go to war. Cnut says if they’re caught with a Saxon, they’ll be killed when they get back. (Episode 4.1) Hæsten tells Cnut and Brida that he met with Eardwulf and told him they were leaving for Ireland. They’ll attack Mercia while they’re gone. They’ll sail to the estuary before dawn and keep the boats apart to avoid scouts. When they reach Mercia, they’ll attack Aegelesburg and kill King Edward. Brida says they’ll kill Æthelred too. Wessex will help Mercia. They’ll lure Edward out and fight on their terms, taking the country. Hæsten asks how Cnut tamed Brida. He says he treated her well and loved her. (Episode 4.1) Brida, Hæsten, and Cnut lead their army into Tetsworth, the Kingdom of Mercia. They’ll rest there and attack at first light. Get the Mercians to sleep. Hæsten asks how far Aegelesburg is. Close enough to catch them off guard. Brida answers. Hæsten plans to leave. He doesn’t like war; he likes women and silver. Brida tells Hæsten he’ll miss a big army gathering. Edward must defend his sister and mother. Aethelred’s death will lead to a quick response. They’ll ride into Mercia and force a battle. Cnut calls Cnut and Esgar. He wants them to go with Hæsten until the campaign is over. Hæsten wonders how Cnut got Brida to follow him. She says they made a blood bond. Hæsten says he knows Brida is pregnant with Cnut’s child. He can tell by her breasts. Brida threatens to cut off Hæsten’s balls and feed them to him if he tells Cnut. Cnut calls Brida over as he rallies the men. He tells them to rest because they’ll attack at dawn and burn Mercia. (Episode 4.2)

How does The Last Kingdom series 5 show the borderlands and burhs? We go back to Mercia and Uhtred is at Rumcofa (Runcorn). This Mersey-side settlement is on the edge of Christendom and on the border of the Mercian kingdom. It is a trading community where pagans and Christians live side by side. The Rumcofa Cross. In The Last Kingdom, Christians worship both inside and outside. This is good. Monks bring a painted cross onto a jetty and later erect it for Father Benedict to say prayers. The crosses are used for festivals and worship in the absence of churches. The crosses are symbols of conversion.

Why was Osbert hidden?

Osbert didn’t do much for the movie. Seven Kings Must Die focused on Edwards sons, Aethelstan and Aelfweard, and their desire for the throne. Aelfweard chose to yield, but his brother killed him. Aethelstan tried to keep power and control his destiny. He killed friends, captured Osbert and Edmund, and banished Uhtred to the Shetlands. Osbert was found safe and hidden to ensure their survival. Producer Nigel Marchant explained why Osbert didn’t appear in Last Kingdom until the finale. We introduced Uhtred’s two children, Aelfwynn and Aethelstan, who were caught up in the action. It would have been too many characters. He didn’t get much screen time in the movie. When Uhtred died, he made Aethelstan his heir and that ended Osbert’s story.

What is the age difference between Uhtred and Aethelflaed?

Aethelflaed is four years older than her brother Edward and 14 years younger than Uhtred. By the time they start dating in season 4, she is about 30 and he is about 44. She dies in season 5 at about 48, but looks younger in the show. Aethelstan is a child in The Last Kingdom season 4, but he’s about 15 years old in the books for this season. Edward was 20 when Aethelstan was born, and Uhtred was 38. Aethelstan was about 30 when he became king after his father died. In season 5, Aethelstan is shown as a young man around 20. By the time of Seven Kings Must Die, Aethelstan should be about 30. Finan’s age is unclear, but he is probably around the same age as Uhtred. Like Uhtred, Finan ages a lot, but the show keeps him in his 30s or 40s. Assuming he is around Uhtred’s age, he would be around 60 by the time they retake Bebbanburg in The Last Kingdom season 5 and around 70 in Seven Kings Must Die.

Little is known about Edmund because the Vikings destroyed any evidence of his reign. Coins show that Edmund was king after Æthelweard of East Anglia. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle says that Edmund was killed in 869 after the Vikings invaded East Anglia. Medieval accounts of Edmund’s life and death differ. Some say he died in battle, while others say he was captured and killed after refusing to renounce Christianity.

  • i hate what they did to Brida. she is such a great and strong character! but in the tv series she just looks like weepy clingy spoiled child with a dirty mouth, serving just as a companion and nothing more than a moment of relief to Uhtred, someone who just follows him, when, originally, she is in fact Uhtred’s equal since the beginning
