I hated the way Josh invalidated her experience after this song, telling her everyone is having a great time and she’s the problem. Like dude, you’ve been here twenty minutes. She’s lived this her whole life. At the very least give her the benefit of the doubt… but like… some validation and support would be nice too?
I like how this show touches on how women are so often encouraged to find physically enhancing solutions to life problems. So often girls and women are given the message, “if only you get prettier and more attractive then your problems will be solved.” It sees women more as physical then mental and emotional beings. Rebecca’s stresses, traumas and problems aren’t fixed with makeovers, men, parties, even friends. They’re addressed during the quiet moments in between when she allows herself to be quiet, honest and vulnerable with herself and others.
One huge injustice to this show was that in the ads for it (at least in South Africa), they played the part of this song where she squeaks the words. And they played that as A LOT. And when you hear that for the 20th time, you’re gonna start resenting the ad, and avoiding the show. Can’t believe I missed out on such a great show at the time because of one marketing decision.
