Who started emo?
Emo is a music genre with emotional lyrics. It started in the mid-1980s Washington, D.C. hardcore scene, where it was called emotional hardcore. Rites of Spring and Embrace were among the first bands to pioneer the genre. In the early to mid-1990s, emo was adopted by alternative, indie, punk, and pop-punk bands, including Sunny Day Real Estate, Jawbreaker, Capn Jazz, and Jimmy Eat World. By the mid-1990s, bands like Braid, the Promise Ring, and the Get Up Kids emerged from Midwest emo. Several independent record labels started specializing in the genre. Meanwhile, screamo, a more aggressive style of emo using screamed vocals, also emerged. It was pioneered by the San Diego bands Heroin and Antioch Arrow. Screamo bands like Hawthorne Heights, Silverstein, Story of the Year, Thursday, the Used, and Underoath achieved mainstream success in the 2000s. Emo is also a way of life for many fans. Emo fashion includes skinny jeans, black eyeliner, band T-shirts, studded belts, and straight, jet-black hair with long bangs. Since the early 2000s, fans of emo music who dress like this are called emo kids. Emo was seen as a subculture of outsiders. Some people think that emo is linked to depression, self-harm, and suicide. This, along with its rise in popularity in the early 2000s, led to a backlash against emo. Some bands, including My Chemical Romance and Panic! at the Disco, rejected the emo label because of the social stigma and controversy surrounding it. Emo and emo pop entered mainstream culture in the early 2000s with the success of Jimmy Eat World and Dashboard Confessional. Many artists signed contracts with major record labels. Bands like My Chemical Romance, AFI, Fall Out Boy, and The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus kept the genre popular throughout the rest of the decade. By 2010, emo bands were less popular. Some changed their sound, and others broke up. Meanwhile, a new emo style emerged. Bands like the World Is a Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid to Die and Modern Baseball used the sound and style of 1990s emo. In the late 2010s, emo rap became popular. Its most famous artists included Lil Peep, XXXTentacion, and Juice Wrld.

Is Black Veil Brides emo?
Wikipedia says Black Veil Brides is an emo rock band. No more stereotypes. I hate the term “emo” for anything. People often call my rock bands “emo.” This pisses me off. I call my rock music “scene.” My last post explains why I dislike stereotypes. Stereotypes make people narrow-minded. Sorry for the rant. Anyway, back to my point. Alternative rock has a wide range of sounds. I had no idea what to expect from Black Veil Brides. I watched some of their music videos on YouTube. I don’t usually look up music videos. This shows how much I wanted to know about Black Veil Brides. “Heart of Fire” and “In the End” were my first Black Veil Brides songs. I wasn’t expecting such a hard rock sound. Black Veil Brides’ rock sound is very different from Andy Black’s The Shadow Side album. Black Veil Brides is one of the hardest rock bands I listen to. Only my symphonic metal and nu-metal bands come close to this heavy hard rock sound. I like variety in rock subgenres. It took me a few days to get used to Black Veil Brides’ music. The drums, bass, and two electric guitars made a beautiful, complex sound with Andy’s deep voice. This is the perfect combination. My ears loved it. I was hooked.

What religion is the black veil?
“The Ministers Black Veil” is set in a small Puritan community. To understand the story, it’s important to know about Puritanism. The Puritans were a Christian Protestant group that started in England in the 1600s. They were banned from the country for their beliefs, so Puritans left for America and settled in New England. The Puritans believed that all people are born sinful and that good behavior and religious education could lead them to heaven. Puritans lived simple lives and avoided dancing, singing, wearing bright colors, and going to plays. They focused on their piety and saw their behavior as an outward manifestation of their inner goodness. In “The Minister’s Black Veil,” Hawthorne shows the conflict between Hooper’s strict Puritanism and Milford’s more relaxed Puritanism. At the start of the story, the townspeople are thinking about secular things as they walk to church. Children are laughing, and young men are looking at young women. Hooper seems like a paragon of Puritan virtues once he puts on the veil. He doesn’t want to get married or make friends, even though Hawthorne says he does. When asked why, he says he’s more interested in heaven than on earth. This is the classic Puritan choice. As the story goes on, Hawthorne shows that Puritanism has flaws. Hooper’s veil encourages the townspeople to pay more attention to his sermons and fear for their souls. Hawthorne never shows the reward for this.” The Puritans have taken the townspeople’s joy and energy for nothing. The Puritans believe sin is everywhere, so they think the veil represents Hooper’s sins. They don’t realize he’s trying to tell them to look at their own sins. Even Hooper, a Puritan, may be breaking his own rules. The black veil makes him more visible to the townspeople, which could make him guilty of the sin of pride. Hooper is no better than the townspeople having fun on Sunday. The only difference is that Hooper is unhappy. Hawthorne thinks Puritanism is good because it makes people moral and pious. But it also makes them unhappy and makes them show off their morality.

So basically, this song is saying that Andy Sixx is dead. That’s why Andy Sixx is in the coffin and the notebook from Knives and Pens was set aflame. The song’s basically showing that a new Andy was born, Andy Biersack, and that the previous Andy, Andy Sixx, is now gone. Awesome song/video I love BVB
Mom- you need therapy or something? Dad- You need Jesus son girlfriend- Sits on top of me and listen to it with me aunt – who are you this isn’t you cousin- Plays along with his guitar 🙂 (Side note in 2021 edited) Not that I’m into men in straight and into women but it’s his eyes for me gotta love the dudes eyes wish I had eyes like his ALWAYS ROCK ON “I DONT OWE YOU ANYTHING”
Did anyone else notice that in knives and pens the boy that represents Andy had the green note book where he wrote his feelings like Andy did and here Andy has the book and slams it on the coffin when he is in it and at the end it has it burning but see the Andy in the coffin looks different than the Andy out of it, more make up dressed in different clothes dressed as Andy sixx then Andy comes and closes the coffin as if saying “Andy sixx is dead” and when the book burns at the end it’s as if saying that the boy from knives and pens has grown up and matured and has turned into a confident man (it reads hero) that doesn’t need the notebook anymore because now he’s found his path in life and helped millions to do the same
the first song that I listened to was In The End I was like “Oh I think i might actually like this” so I started listening to more of their music and then I listened to Knives And Pens and when it came to the part were he screamed i’m not gonna lie it kinda scared me lol but that was because i have never listened to that type of music so yea morale of the story is, is that- well there is no morale 🙂
Take your crosses I’ll live without them Standing wet in holy rain. When you were baptized Ignored the problem That’s when I watched you seal your grave. I tried to save you But let you drink the pain A final song now we both know. So I’m not givin’ up Won’t let you suffocate me You find your hell is home. I don’t owe you anything You’ll only die a dream forgotten. I’ve got my pride so hear me sing I’ll never let you steal my coffin. Words as weapons Pierce into you So self-righteous, have it your way I’m alive and now I’m burning Say a prayer to end today I tried to save you But let you drink the pain A final song now we both know. So I’m not givin’ up Won’t let you suffocate me You find your hell is home. I don’t owe you anything You’ll only die a dream forgotten. I’ve got my pride so hear me sing I’ll never let you steal my coffin. Never let you steal my after life Never let you steal my after life So I’m not givin’ up Won’t let you suffocate me You find your hell is home. I don’t owe you anything You’ll only die a dream forgotten. I’ve got my pride so hear me sing I’ll never let you steal my coffin. I don’t owe you anything You’ll only die a dream forgotten. I’ve got my pride so hear me sing I’ll never let you steal my coffin.
This song represents a point in his life, when he converted from Andy Six or Sixx, and back into Andy Biersack. When he was still going through that moment in his life when people considered bvb ‘Emo’, back when they wore a bunch of makeup and leather. That was when Andrew Dennis Biersack went by Andy Six/Sixx. Andy Sixx, is the one in the coffin, indicating that he is done with that point in his life and is now moving on. That boy from Knives And Pens? That boy represented Andy in his teen years. Andy has grown up from a teenager, and he is now a man. He’s changed with the times, just like everyone else does eventually.
Take your crosses, I’ll live without them, Standing wet in holy rain. When you were baptized, Ignored the problem, That’s when I watched you seal your grave. I tried to save you, But let you drink the pain, A final song now we both know. So I’m not giving up, Won’t let you suffocate me, You find your hell-less home. I don’t owe you anything, You’ll only die a dream, forgotten. I’ve got my pride so hear me sing, I’ll never let you steal my coffin. Words is weapons, listen to you, So self-righteous, heading your way. I’m alive and now I’m burning, Say a prayer to end today. I tried to save you, But let you drink the pain. A final song now we both know So I’m not giving up, Won’t let you suffocate me, You find your hell-less home. I don’t owe you anything, You’ll only die a dream, forgotten. I’ve got my pride so hear me sing, I’ll never let you steal my coffin. NEVER LET YOU STEAL MY AFTERLIFE! NEVER LET YOU STEAL MY AFTERLIFE! So I’m not giving up, Won’t let you suffocate me, You find your hell is home. I don’t owe you anything, You’ll only die a dream, forgotten. I’ve got my pride so hear me sing, I’ll never let you steal my coffin. I don’t owe you anything, You’ll only die a dream, forgotten. I’ve got my pride so hear me sing, I’ll never let you steal my coffin.
this article is basically just saying that andy has grown, hes more mature than he was when he started the band, and him in the casket is his younger self. when andy puts the notebook from knives and pens on the coffin then goes to the front of it to close the door, he his putting his younger self to rest and continuing on as he is now. visually he has less make up on and now goes by andy biersack instead of being under his persona as andy sixx. and you can hear him as a vocalist, and the band as a whole, graduating from their older material and becoming more mature in their music. its a simplistic article that explains a complex idea, which is why this article/song is so beautiful
In the article, Andy died and people have came there to remember him. The band is playing in a dark, smoke-filled room. Later in the article, a woman tries to steal a necklace with the Black Veil Brides symbol on it. After she takes it, two woman overlooking the coffin vaporize all in the room, killing everyone and leaving only the necklace. Then Andy walks into the room, lays a notebook down and closes the coffin (which has his body inside) and disappears. At the end, a notebook burns. This article symbolizes a change in the band and how Andy Biersack is a new person who does not wish to be treated as he was when he was younger. Closing himself into the coffin is symbolic of him burying his old self, and the notebook which is burnt represents the one that the bullied teenager writes in in Black Veil Brides’ first music article, Knives and Pens. Growing up, the band members faced a lot of troubles due to the way they dressed and the music they listened to, and in the article to Knives and Pens this is shown through the bullied teenager. However, they have now grown and developed as a band into something almost like idols. I guess what they’re trying to say in this article is that they do not wish to be those people they used to be.
