What Are The Effects Of Grooming On A Child?

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is an adverse childhood experience that has significant long-term effects on the survivor. Grooming, a common tool used by offenders to gain access to potential victims, can cause psychological and physical consequences. It can occur in person or online, and can cause a child to think they have an important and special relationship with the person who is harming them. Grooming can cause a child to experience confusion over the nature of their relationship with the person who is harming them.

The long-term impact of child grooming on children includes mental health issues, PTSD, and social and economic challenges. The UK Government introduced the Sexual Communication with a Child offense in April 2017, giving the police the power to charge adults who send a sexual message to children in England and Wales. Over 2020, there were 10,000 cases of online grooming offenses recorded by the police.

Grooming can lead to difficulties sleeping, anxiety, and difficulty concentrating or coping with school work. Victims are four times more likely to develop drug abuse and PTSD than non-victims. Grooming allows offenders to slowly overcome natural boundaries long before sexual abuse occurs. On the surface, groomed children may experience intense emotions such as fear, guilt, shame, and confusion.

To prevent and intervene early, it is crucial to recognize the stages of grooming and the manipulative tactics used by offenders. By doing so, we can create a safer environment and intervene early to prevent abuse.

Grooming behaviors. Groomers use certain behaviors to make children think what’s happening is normal or to make them feel trapped. The grooming relationship can go from good to bad very fast.

Gaining trust. A groomer hides their true intentions and gains the child’s trust to abuse them (Sexual Offences Act 2003: explanatory notes). The child or young person learns to respect, trust, and love their groomer. They may not know they’re being groomed because they think their groomer is a friend or boyfriend/girlfriend (Coffey and Lloyd, 2014). The groomer may also try to gain the trust of the whole family so they can be alone with a child. Groomers who work with children may use similar tactics with their colleagues.

What does grooming do to a child?

Sexual grooming is when someone tries to get close to a child to abuse them. This can happen in many ways, including online, in person, and through other forms of communication. Children who are groomed may have mental health issues. How did it start? Before it was used to describe sexual abuse, the term “grooming” meant mentoring, coaching, or preparing someone for leadership. From 1975 to 1985, law enforcement in the United States became aware of child sexual abuse by people outside the family. Previously, they focused on stranger danger and threats of violence. In these new cases of child sexual abuse, the abusers used gifts, alcohol, drugs, money, and other things to manipulate the children. While there were some cases before this time where the pattern was recognized, it was during this decade that the FBI became aware of the pattern and started to take criminal investigations seriously in the United States. There was also growing awareness that offenders joined youth-serving organizations to gain access to potential victims.

  • When I was 10 years old or 11 years old this happen to me. I didn’t even understand it. I watch another person explain. They find kids who are isolated. I remember that I talk to a grown man in his 30s while I was 10. Tbh I am 25 year now but I can’t imagine myself doing that to a child. The guy was sick. For the longest time I thought he was the love of my life. Eventually he stop calling me and then I started looking for other guys love. No guy liked me or gave me the attention which cause me to develop depression and then I started to hear his voice In my head for a few years. I am proud of myself today to be alive and found that love inside that I wanted from other people. I don’t know how but I guess I stop caring and my thearpist let me vent. Although I close myself from developing relationships I never feel alone with myself. I am not saying I am perfect but I surrive a lot. Take a look at yourself you made it! Your alive and you should be proud that your free. I thought it was my fault but it isn’t! If you happen remember we surrived we are strong and you are loved by yourself!

  • When I was between the ages of 13-16 we went to a church that had a female youth pastor who I realize now saw that I was an awkward kid who was living with frustrated and angry grandparents. Most of the frustration was taken out on me physically and by this time I believed completely that adults in positions of authority we’re to be obeyed unquestionably and anything by saying “yes ma’am” and complying was out of the question. The attention I was soon getting was unwelcome to me since as an awkward and somewhat unpopular kid any attention from an adult made my situation worse. I hated being hugged and this woman went out of her way to hug me, sit with me or worse yet arrange sleeping arrangements. My grandma even gave her concert tickets since I wasn’t going to be allowed to go alone or with a friend- having worked with kids I realize that this was horribly inappropriate. She also called me at home just to talk. This was another boundary that was impressed on me, only call if important. The matter came to a head when she arranged for us to sleep in the bed with her during an overnight. I slept on the floor. When we got home I had to apologise for being rude. I managed to stay away until she had to leave to take care of a relative. We also found out that there were other girls being groomed. My grandma made this worse by making herself the hero by saying how she had rebuffed the advances when she in fact had encouraged it. She even said how I had “squandered a lovely opportunity for a mentor” when I had been upset that I couldn’t get into a mentoring program.

  • I don’t know my situation was different all of the eight abusers grown to be male and female from the ages of 9 to 13 most of them were mean manipulative but there was only one that was really nice to me but I really had no memory of this until I was 25 so basically it was like I was reliving everything over for the first time. pretty much blocked it out and as I started to remember wow it was pretty freaky like you go from having no sex drive or any sexual desire to all the sudden just kind of like a raging River it’s been about 12 years in God’s word through a lot of different things but I think the hardest part is I’m not really comfortable in my body. did you genetics there’s some issues that really make it difficult people often ask me about it or you say comments like I’m really pretty except from my eyes and forehead. I had this problem since I was 12 and then with the fibromyalgia you just get fat around the middle really hard day again when you’re sleeping all the time and you can’t really exercise because your whole body hurts anyways. but you know the truth even if I can fix fix every imperfection the learning disabilities the cerebral palsy the fibromyalgia and all the physical issues that I hate even even if I could just be physically perfect still wouldn’t feel comfortable in my body like if I could have a body transplant I would. I try to ignore how I feel but being the fact that I’m not married and one day I’m going to be buried don’t really know how to overcome this I’m planning on going back to counseling.

  • i am diabed i went through this from 16 to 50 i didn’t know this for along time iam just learning this and its painful i am I Q disabled i am slow so thisis hard i heard people with disabilities are at hi risk and have a hier Chance of being victimized many times by difred men who use this grils and women like i said from 16 to 50 in my case it makes me mad and i am slowly getting it
