You know what? I actually like their love story. Yes, it’s cheesy and out of a fairy tale, but it’s made on purpose. Fairy tales don’t work well in Westeros. It was a dumb decision on Robb’s part, but it balances the dumb decision his mother made by sending Jaime away with Brienne…irrationality is in the Starks’ blood. Also I like the fact that we got to see at least ONE wedding which isn’t about political alliances and the vows aren’t ironic.
It was Freys fault. You dont place conditions on a King and you dont make demands to your liege lord in Edmure when you constantly turn up to battles once the fighting is done. Frey always wanted respect but never did shit to earn it from anyone. Robb really should have just done what Theon said…storm the twins if need be and take the damn crossing. even though this scene is intimate as intended, thing is, robb is a stark and starks (like most of the northerners) are worshippers of the old gods. talisa on the other hand is a volantene and i believe r’hllor is the predominant religion in volantis alongside valyrian gods worshiped by the old blood.
Like you say, Ned would’ve raised Robb to keep to the Old Gods, which IIRC practically have no rites anyway, so HOW they married likely wouldn’t have mattered to Robb, one way or another. But Talisa, being a Volantene, would have likely followed the faith of R’hllor, and aside from Melisandre and Thoros of Myr, I see no Red Priests anywhere in Westeros, so I guess for her at least, it’s this or nothing…either that or there’s a sept or two in Volantis and she actually does follow the Seven…
The really REALLY sad, tragic and all round fucked up irony to this and how this marriage ended is that it was one of the happiest to take place in the show. The majority of people would be married for the clemency, lenience, you name it. They’d have to have huge amounts of forbearance to hold the marriage but these two were in such tragic bliss.
But at least Cat follows the faith of the Seven. And since Ned and Cat married at Riverrun, it makes sense that Ned made the concession to marry under his wife’s faith, esp in her house. I don’t think it’s necessarily a plot hole, the writers might have made it this way for a reason…. I just think marrying under the northern rites would have suited better.
I mean yeah this scene is beautiful and all but they made Robb look like a stupid idiot who was thinking with what’s between his legs rather than his brain. If they went with what actually happened in the books, it wouldn’t have presented him that way. In the books, he’s set to marry Jeyne Westerling, who unbeknownst to Robb, is part of a family who is working with the Lannisters to betray him. As time went on though, Jeyne actually falls in love with Robb and regrets being part of the Lannister’s scheme. Which in my opinion, makes the red wedding even more heartbreaking. 😞
This is another thing that’s better in the books. I like Robb and Talisa, but the way things lead up to the red wedding in the books is just tragic. book Robb’s deadset on marrying one of Lord Frey’s daughters, but he’s injured in a battle and ends up having sex with his book wife Jeyne Westerling in his weakened state, and he only marries her because he accidentally gets her pregnant. It was an honest mistake that leads up to the Red Wedding, instead of here in the show where Robb completely forgets his fathers teachings of honour and oath keeping; which is hilarious when he kills Rickard Karstark for being an oathbreaker when he’s also an oathbreaker, hypocrite much.
Ok, I understand why they couldn’t keep the whole Jeyne Westerling story and had to replace her with Talisa so they can crop the majority of backstory and just go straight with romance but why the reason of marriage couldn’t stay the same? He could have still slept with her, made her a baby and then marry her instead of other way around. It would made more sense and be more in character. On unrelated note, I absolutely adore the actress that played Talisa❤️

Talisa is foreign and even if Cat is a southerner, wouldn’t Ned have raised Robb to follow the old gods, especially since he was raised to be Lord of Winterfell? I realize that they had a septa at Winterfell so the kids got educated in the faith of the Seven, but Robb is King of the North! King of the North should marry under rites of the northern gods.
Robb marrying Talisa did not lose the war. Cat releasing Jaime and Robb sending Theon to Pyke lost the war. If he kept an eye on Theon, his castle would still have been in his possession, meaning Roose Bolton wouldn’t have thought of betraying him. If Cat didn’t release Jaime, Karstark wouldn’t have killed two innocent boys and been executed. Robb only went back to the Freys because they lost the Karstarks, so the marriage pact doesn’t matter. Walder Frey didn’t even give a shit about his daughters, that was an excuse because he was bought by Tywin.
