What Causes Cheating In Marriage?

A study of 495 people revealed eight key reasons for infidelity: anger, low self-esteem, lack of love, low commitment, need for variety, neglect, sexual desire, and circumstance. These reasons arise within the cheater and are not the responsibility of the betrayed partner. Infidelity is associated with previous cheating, relationship boredom, dissatisfaction, and duration; expectations of imminent break-ups; and low-frequency. An accepted model of infidelity posits five motivational domains which drive extramarital relationships: sexuality, lack of satisfaction, emotional satisfaction, being, and being. Many people cheat because of anger, lack of love, low commitment, esteem, and neglect. Some cheaters want to be discovered, and feeling neglected is at least moderately tied to their cheating behavior.

Infidelity is a form of betrayal that can occur as sexual infidelity, emotional infidelity, or a combination of both. It does not signal an end of love in marriage but certainly causes heartbreak to the partners’ sexual health. Risk factors for cheating include excessive use of the internet, lack of communication, porn addiction, alcohol or drug abuse, boredom, lack of strong bond between partners, feeling alone and unwanted, etc.

Infidelity in marriage falls into one of four categories: the straying spouse has unmet emotional needs, such as loneliness, neglect, unappreciated, emotionally irrelevant, fear of growing older, sadness, anger, resentment, boredom, and wanting emotional validation from someone else. Emotional infidelity is a reflection of character and may be a result of a lack of honest communication.

I have received many letters like them, and many more from those who have had affairs with co-workers. One of my previous columns, “Escaping the Jaws of Infidelity,” contains similar ideas.
