What Culture Wears Black Wedding Dresses?

In certain Asian cultures, black is considered a lucky color and is symbolically worn by brides on their wedding day. Black wedding dresses, often adorned with red or gold accents, represent prosperity and happiness in the marriage. Wearing a black wedding dress presents the bride as a bold, resilient, and sophisticated woman worthy of respect, especially from her groom. The history of the black wedding gown can be traced back to Spain, where it was custom in Roman Catholic traditions for a Spanish bride to wear a black gown.

The black wedding dress symbolizes good luck, as red is believed to bring good fortune for the bride and groom and blessings for their marriage. In Chinese culture, the bride wears a red wedding dress such as a Qun Kwa or a cheongsam on her wedding day to celebrate the joy and happiness of the marriage. The black wedding dress also symbolizes a ward against bad spirits and bad luck.

In Western culture, black is more commonly worn to funerals as a symbol of mourning, but it is shaking off its reputation as an “unlucky” color and is a symbol of strength and power. While black is still a relatively unusual color for a Western bride to wear, the color is more common in China, Japan, and South Korea, where brides combine black fabric with gold or red embroidery.

Brands like Davids Bridal, Galia Lahav, Maggie Sottero Zander, and Markarian have included black wedding gowns in their selection, while others have included them as a symbol of lifelong commitment to their grooms. Black wedding dresses represent the unapologetic embrace of individuality and personal style.

  • I can’t believe I’m saying this, but that first black dress was perfect, not stunning, perfect. The Bride looked stunning in it. It worked perfectly with her slightly deeper toned skin, and my goodness, the tattoos (and I do Not prefer tats) worked With the dress – or was it the other way around. I hope she got this one.

  • I don’t understand what is so wrong with Cami Lee wanting that black dress. She looked GORGEOUS in it and everyone just stomped on it. Yes, black is not traditional for a wedding but she clearly was a unique and non-traditional bride!! Let the girl wear what she wants! It bugged me so much that her mom and sisters were so unsupportive of her. She got so many compliments on it and she absolutely loved it, and I know at the end of the day it might be “just a dress”, but comprising just to make others happy always bugs me.

  • When the mother says “No, I’m the mother and I have to like the dress.” I can’t even. Why do these mothers act like they own their daughter or that their daughters are younger versions of them? They are not you, they are their own people. If you’re paying for the dress you have a say, but let them be themselves!

  • My daughter Danielle has always wanted a black dress, especially after that girl Camilla. My mother in law had a fit, but her mom told her that when it comes to Danielle’s wedding dress, what Danielle wants Danielle will have. And that was that. I was ok with it. Danielle is now 28 getting married in May and she will be wearing black. Both my mother in law and her mom are gone now but as her great granny said, what Danielle wants to wear she will wear. Even though her future mother in law don’t like it at all

  • People forget that it’s NOT THERE WEDDING! The bride should wear what she feels beautiful in not what others expect. Also white meant purity and poor because color dyes were for the rich. So if you really want to be a princess get a colored dress. But white, sexy, innocent, vintage, whatever you feel amazing in is YOUR DRESS ❤

  • camila is absolutely radiant in the black gown she truly looks that she feels this belongs to her and i know the upset feeling in latino families we get so much judgement to look “pure” and “innocent” and it has to make mamma happy but why? it’s not your wedding its very frustrating and my mamma and i already talked about this when the day comes i get married (to my someday future wife) she can either be there or not i will not be the one regretting anything and i will not compromise my wife’s wedding and mine to make one person who isn’t even one of the people being married to be happy

  • The first and third brides look like street Walker’s. They are not classy at all. I love black wedding dress, but that one did look like a dress you would dress up in .I don’t understand brides that want to show everything. Save it for your wedding night. These are brides that get divorced in 2-5 years.

  • Wedding apparel across societies and in fact different ‘ species Is about tradition NOT about being ‘ different .If one carefully contemplates the meaning behind the joining of Into one it is definitely a out .the comfort,if an adventure as a Couple wheels within the values of ones own heritage perusal these immature self centered rather superficial I individuals is not something g that any of my friends discussed or saw within our own families who had come through aWkrkd. War and we’re commuted to rebuild their homelands as they supported each other and grew in understanding .Yes one wore a handed dow. Necklace arrived k es favourite flower BUT as I watch even Gok a..revolted by necklines to the navel and mismatched seams. . L😮

  • All of these dresses show WAY WAY TOO TOO MUCH. All of these dresses need to be gotten rid of especially the naked dress(that should only be for in the bedroom between husband and wife by themselves). These dresses are all horrible in fact after 5:42 i stopped perusal(more like fast forwarding through this article) to switch to something that actually has standards and class; which i thought say yes to the dress had, but guess not.
