What Did Allah Say About Marriage?

The Quran teaches that marriage is a great covenant, a heavy commitment, and a union woven together through love, companionship, kindness, compassion, and support. It is not restricted to a legal or religious relationship but is a layered human emotion. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ referred to marriage as meethaq ghaleetha, which is the Quranic term for the prophethood of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The Quran emphasizes the importance of marriage as a foundation or establishment upon which humans can find comfort.

Homosexual acts are strictly forbidden in Islam, with the focus mainly on men. The Quran also discusses the people of Prophet Lut, who heavily dowelled in homosexuality. Homosexuality is considered a grave sin and is punishable by Allah. Women vary greatly in their development and physical readiness for marriage.

Islam allows nudity between a husband and a wife, as mentioned in Surah al-Muminun 23:5-6. Those who guard their modesty, except from their wives or their right hands, are free from blame.

The Prophet ﷺ emphasized the importance of marriage in Islam, stating that it completes half of one’s faith and is an act of worship. He also highlighted the need for a solution between respecting parents and the necessity of getting married. The Quran has limitations on limitless marriages during the period of Jahiliyyah (Ignorance), and polygamy, which involves having multiple spouses, is only allowed for men. The Prophet’s marriage to Ayesha was unusual for the time, and the Quran describes marriage as a sacred bond between a man and a woman.

Marriage is mentioned in several surahs, with the most referenced surah being An Nisaa. Quran 24:32 asserts that marriage is a legitimate way to satisfy sexual desire. Islam recognizes the value of sex and companionship and advocates for a guardian in marriage. Aisha and Ibn Abbas also stated that there is no marriage except with a guardian, and their partners are not just companions but blessings from God meant to bring peace and affection into our lives.
