What Do Amish Woman Do On Their Wedding Night?

The Amish wedding night is a sacred ritual that signifies commitment to the partner, family, and community. It is a time of transition, growth, and bonding, where traditional values and traditions are upheld. Amish couples create a serene and intimate space within the bride’s parent’s home, keeping it simple with minimal decor. The wedding night holds a special place in their hearts as a time to embrace tradition, celebrate love, and strengthen family ties.

The Amish believe large families are a blessing from God, and marrying only between members of the Amish Church is allowed. The elderly do not go to a retirement facility; they remain at home. Amish couples must wear a “Bonnet” to cover up, and there is no stipulated gift for the first night of marriage. They must listen to their body, take time to kiss and touch each other’s bodies, and try oral sex.

Amish weddings are traditionally held on Tuesdays or Thursdays in later fall after the harvest. In the Amish community, the new couple spends the night at the bride’s parent’s home, talking with the family in the hope of a successful marriage. They are allowed to talk to each other during the night but are not allowed to touch each other.

Sometimes, the bride will match unmarried boys and girls over 16 years old to sit together at the evening meal. The newly married couple usually spends the first night and the next few months at the bride’s home without a honeymoon. Amish wedding celebrations are long, lasting most of the day, with the women serving the meal while the men set up dinner.

Some agencies are reluctant to let Amish families adopt, but these adoptions do happen. Abuse is also hard to solve, even when ministers get involved, there is no guarantee that things will work out. Some Amish and English women are abused, but they cope by relying on God. Dr. Johnson-Weiner says, “The more we understand each other, the better our world will be.”

  • I had a friend that met a Amish girl while she was on rumspringa and she was wanting to fool around and she explained to him that it was hugely against the Amish rules even during rumspringa but she really wanted to experience sex but he was a decent person and refused saying that she would be sorry she did it and it might have serious consequences should she go back to the Amish way of life. But they continued hanging out together while she was in our town,we live in va.beach and her and some other Amish kids were staying in a hotel at the ocean front, anyway they continued to hang out and do the things that 18 19 year old kids do and she would continue to pressure him about sex and finally he gave in and he confided in me that her hygiene in and around that area was really bad and he was very nice in saying something to her about it and she said that she was afraid to clean herself good because that meant touching herself and that was a mortal sin . But they continued and she got what she was looking for and when the other kids went back she stayed and she moved in with my friend and she started to live like what she called the english. Her father came and tried to get her to come back and she wouldn’t. Her and my friend ended up getting married having two kids together eventually she became a realtor and he graduated college and runs his own business doing some kind of contracting for the navy and they have been together for almost 30 years now. Her family did come around and accept her decision and they go visit them on occasion.

  • My dad grew up Amish and all my extended family is Amish (except for some cousins that have since grown up and left) There are many truths to the article but some that are dependent upon the family/community/church. My dad was not shunned when he left and we were always invited to gatherings, weddings, funerals… etc. they do use generators for pumps to flush toilets and have running water. The men that have businesses are allowed electricity and use of phones for the business. Also, brides can wear whatever color they want not just shades of blue. I’ve never heard of any of my family carrying around a rule book lol

  • 1 time I saw an amish family come into wawa in a car that the father was driving and the kids were bull shitting on their own phones. At 1st I assumed they were mennonite because mennonite aren’t as strict but they said they were full amish. It blew my mind. This was September 2019. Its like even the amish are starting to modernize these days

  • They will use power tools to build their barns and houses…they can’t own the tools but they can use them . they will rent tools and big farm equipment to harvest but they just can’t own the equipment. One rule that’s counter intuitive is they must date in public to avoid temptation but they will crawl into a bed together. Im assuming the bed that they are in is in a bedroom and not in the middle of town square.

  • We have many Amish and Mennonite families in our local area. In New Brunswick, Canada. they are great people and are bringing back to life, farms that have been neglected or abandoned. Some also have or work at normal jobs. lovely people. One Mennonite wife had slugs in her garden. She asked if my husband could give her a beer. To use to trap the slugs. It was so cute the way she asked. The article was misleading.

  • I just have one question. If the Amish don’t get cancer, why are there six to ten cases at a time at St Jude’s Children Research Hospital in Memphis TN? My 4 year old son who has a inoperable brain tumor and has been given a zero chance of surviving goes to St Jude’s quit often for we live in NW Louisiana. We have to stay at either the Tri Delta House or Ronald McDonald house there in Memphis. We have met several of these families. I know they are Amish because they have told me. One even tried to convert me from Pentecostal which is our religion to theirs. Hiram said to me that I would have to give up technology and my reply was hey that’s cool. I was a child of the 80’s and did not have technology anyway. Hiram then says I would have to give up driving cars and go to a horse and buggy. Which my reply was hey your form of transportation is a lot more reliable than most Honda’s or Toyota’s! In which I thought he was about to fall over backward laughing! I just had that question, sorry if I upset the Apple cart!

  • Titus\r Chapter 2\r 1But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:\r \r 2That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.\r \r 3The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;\r \r 4That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,\r \r 5To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.\r \r 6Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded.\r \r 7In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,\r \r 8Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.\r \r 9Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again;\r \r 10Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.\r \r 11For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,\r \r 12Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;\r \r 13Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;\r \r 14Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

  • Most of the article is completely off topic of women’s rules. Basically was Amish rules. I lived in Missouri and we would often see the Amish with their horse’s and buggies. I remember once just after dark a car hit one. The people and the horse were all killed. Very sad, it was a terrible accident I’ll never forget.

  • I’m having to admit I am impressed by their way of living because I would appreciate a lot of it. I’m from Germany and I keep noticing how the western way of life as comfortable as may seem keeps destroying a lot of things. And to be totally honest the only thing that keeps me from joining a group like that is my stance over the bible. It’s not that I wouldn’t believe in god’s or something. It’s more like I know there’s thing we can not explain, things that are beyond our understanding. But what people consider god’s, no matter what religion they might belong to are just another form of existence. Bowing down to a certain god to me is nothing more than bowing down to men just because they are or feel in some way superior to me no matter if it’s mentally, physically, supernaturally on in any way else. If what people consider to be god created mankind after his own image that would also mean he created equals to himself. So why do people treat him like something superior instead of a brother? I have a lot more thoughts and theories about that but I think that’s enough to think about if someone decides to take this thoughts seriously instead of judging me for it. I like the connection to nature and the rejected of certain technologies seem actually good to me but due to the need of luxuries as taught by western culture too many people don’t even have the base to understand that. Don’t know what people might think about that. I just felt the need to make a point when I saw that. Have a great day whoever gets to read all of that.

  • I work in an Amish community – I’ve been there for almost 16 years. The Amish guy who’s office is next to mine love to read these kinds of things we laugh our a@# off. I would say the Amish are healthier due to all the exercise. I work with a 60 yr old guy who rides his bike 50 miles in a day for recreation.

  • First mistake in this article. I grew up in Amish country, and my grandfather is ex-Amish. Amish communities only shun people who are baptized into the faith and then leave. If you choose to leave when you’re 18 (which is when they give you the choice to leave or stay), you’re not shunned from the community. You’re still allowed to visit them and do business with them, you’re just not Amish anymore. Also all the Amish where I live speak English and Dutch. I grew up in central PA.

  • One interesting fact that can be checked out is that they studied the rate of mental illness among the Amish because they have such a small gene pool and they found extraordinary High rates of depression and schizophrenia in the Amish as a group. Not just because you would think they’re depressed because they have no electricity and all their other rules but because mental health is genetic. And unfortunately they will not go to a psychiatrist or mental health professional. This is true and not clickbait and you can look it up yourself.

  • 1:22…..I never knew that actually happened. It’s a heck of an idea. It’s the old….If you love someone let them go…..If they return they’re truly with you….saying The problem is that the consequences for staying gone are being shunned by there family, community and church. So I’m not sure what teenager would make such a decision to completely cut ties with family like that. Besides the age at which they are allowing the kids to go out into the world makes it a little difficult for them to be able to survive on there own. It’s really a catch 22. That lady in the thumbnail looks happy as phuck that a horse is in the bedroom!!! Hhhmmmmmm…

  • I wanted to be Amish when i was young. Then I wanted to be a Nun. Because when I was younger I thought those two things were the closest to things to being close to God but then I found out there’s a little demon and everything so I’ll stay where I am….. Christian! Is there polygamy in the Amish community? If NOT… The Amish are WAY BETTER than the POLYGAMIST… Because the polygamist women and children can’t do anything unless the men tell them they can. If it turns out that a child wants to leave polygamy their traded to a whole different side of the country to another polygamous community and that’s where they stay and they are mistreated.

  • Titus\r Chapter 3\r 1Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,\r \r 2To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.\r \r 3For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.\r \r 4But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,\r \r 5Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;\r \r 6Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;\r \r 7That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.\r \r 8This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.\r \r 9But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.\r \r 10A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject;\r \r 11Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself.\r \r 12When I shall send Artemas unto thee, or Tychicus, be diligent to come unto me to Nicopolis: for I have determined there to winter.\r \r 13Bring Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their journey diligently, that nothing be wanting unto them.

  • It’s really more like a cult. Have lived near an Amish community for many years. It depends on the “clan.” Here Amish are only go to 8th grade. They know nothing about history, or science. No they don’t shun the ones who leave the “clan.” Many break the rules, “how can I run a business without a phone” is very common the Deacon may not know. But what the Deacon don’t knows not going to hurt him.

  • I refuse to watch anymore of this article!! This is so false where I am from and makes the Amish sound so harsh! Learn facts and stop generalizing the Amish! There is so many different churches that allow different things. Putting all Amish into one category is rude and disrespectful! I hope anyone who watches this doesn’t believe everything they are seeing/ hearing. All communities are different Amish or not!

  • I’m a physician… and a female. So, I can speak to all of this nonsense. 1). Yes, the Amish are most certainly susceptible to cancer- much like anyone else. Perhaps less due to a life without smoking… but, since pipes and secondary smoke from those are prevalent in their communities, they aren’t exactly exempt. 2). Their beliefs and archaic lifestyles are indeed restrictive to say the least. That said, if they choose to live in that fashion, it is, perhaps their own decision. Personally, I would never subscribe to a life of servitude, prayers, and subservience. If you notice, every “tradition” encourages allegiance to the family, and the church. It, (just as any religion) is based on fear, ridicule and humiliation. They indoctrinate their young and continue the strict pattern to ensure its people are fearful of the outside world-on virtually every level. To say they permit their teens to choose their lifestyle once they hit maturity is considerably misleading. In ALL cases, (yes, I said ALL)… if a person elects to leave the Amish community (aka cult), they are indeed shunned by all. Not merely neighbors & community members, but their own direct relatives as well. So, while they claim it’s an elective lifestyle… it’s rare that a teenage child had the means, resources, or wherewithal to break free of those ties that bind. When given the choice of never seeing your family again- just for the chance to live an unbridled life is often more than these children can bear. Ultimately, they elect to remain in the cult and surrender to their fate as a mindless drone amongst the others.

  • OK, I thought this was 23 rules Amish women must follow. Then why is there an image of St. Benedict holding his ‘Monastic Rules’ in the shot of the horse and buggy? The Amish don’t practice Catholicism as far as I know. And why are all of the church scenes inside an Eastern Orthodox church? Where are these 23 ridiculous rules for Amish women? I definitely know they’re not hidden in St. Benedict’s Monastic Rules.

  • Titus\r Chapter 1\r 1Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;\r \r 2In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;\r \r 3But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;\r \r 4To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.\r \r 5For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:\r \r 6If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.\r \r 7For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;\r \r 8But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;\r \r 9Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.\r \r 10For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision:\r \r 11Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake.\r \r 12One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.

  • I am Amish and live in the 3rd largest Amish community and i am here to say that most of this is absolutely ridiculous and untrue!!! Just to mention a few… I did not stay at my parents house the day after my wedding and i did not wear blue to get married. I have never seen or heard of having to carry around a book of ordnung! Rumshpringa is the word used to describe the phase of life between the age of 16 and when they get married. That does not mean that they WILL dress so called ‘English’ and drive a car or live immoral lives. I know of many many youth (including myself) who have not spent their rumspringa years in this way. Although there’s also many youth that do drive a vehicle, dress ‘English’, etc, most of them do so entirely against their parent’s wishes, and it is not something that is ‘allowed’ so they get a chance see how it is to live like ‘normal’ people! My husband and i are Amish by choice and not mandate. Please check for accuracy of your opinions before passing them on as facts!!!

  • You have catholics there crossing themselves lol. Also, they dont have faces on their dolls bcz they misunderstood the scripture “thou shalt not make unto an engraven image”. They think it means you cant make an engraven image or copy the human face which is weird bcz they carve things all the time. Anyway, the real meaning to that scripture is that you shouldnt kiss, bow or in any way serve an idol.

  • It said ridiculous rules amish women had to follow. Actually it’s not ridiculous. It makes sense to me. Bundaling before marriage or just dating until it’s time for marriage without sex. Toys without faces, teens able to experience the outside world until they feel they want to come back. Hell wish I had these rules. Lol 😊. Would have had better up bringing

  • Im Amish not of you said is true i wouldn’t talk about amish if i didn’t know anything about it we kiss and hug we cuddle that is not that he we don’t care if we don’t get a ring and we don’t live with parents we rent and after the wedding the frist night we may sleep by each other being honest you don’t like the Amish and try to make it as bad as you can i wouldn’t make a nother article if I would be you 🥺😠😠🤔🤔just saying

  • Facts Verse, I found ur articles because Corona brought me here. The title of this present article say Rules Amish WOMEN must obey. However in 0.57 seconds in the clip u r talking about men and beard. You talked about the reference to the term, English and the expectations for their children, then their aversion to the use of technology. My problem is this: the tone or attitude of this article is one which is coming across as condescending and it appears to be making a mockery of the Amish society in general. Also the content does not really fit the title. While I’m interested in issues that affect women and would have appreciated such a article, it’s not nice to poke fun, r mock others because of their religion r Creed. This leads to all kinds of problems that the society does not need if we r to grow and evolve. Can u please edit the article using a clearer perspective? Maybe do a facts verse on the difference between Amish and English. However present the information in a manner that is just factual and u condescending. Then ur work would be informative and factual.
