What are South Indian dresses called?
South Indian clothing is diverse but connected by a common cultural ancestry. South Indian women wear saris, while men wear sarongs. These are either white dhotis or colorful lungis with batik patterns. But these are just a few examples of a long tradition of fashion. The saree is an unstitched drape that enhances the shape of the wearer while only partially covering the midriff. In Indian philosophy, the navel of the Supreme Being is considered the source of life and creativity. Hence, the stomach and navel are to be left unconcealed, though the philosophy behind the costume has largely been forgotten. This makes the realization of sharira-mandala, where the body is your world, as expressed in the Natyashastra, possible. These principles of the sari also apply to other types of drapes, like the lungi or mundu or panchey (a white lungi with colorful silk borders in Kannada), worn by men. The lungi is draped in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction and tied at the back or fixed along the waistline. Sometimes it is lifted to the knee and tied at the waist. It can also be held in the hand to speed up walking. South Indian men don’t cover their upper body. Sometimes, in a formal situation, a piece of cloth may cover the upper body. Some South Indian temples don’t allow men to wear upper-body clothes inside. In Andhra and north Karnataka, men wear kachche panchey, which is tied at the back. Women also wear similar clothes. Men and women in the coastal region wear saris and lungis tied at the back. Calico is a plain-woven cotton fabric. It was first made in South India, now Kerala, during the 11th century. The fabric was dyed and printed in bright colors. Calico prints later became popular in Europe.

Bride wear not only white saree with gold border but also coloured pattu saree….groom also wears different color dress…..Reception is done after wedding.. Now a days non veg also preferred in weddings…. Bharat also done in South Indian wedding but after marriage when bride is going to groom’s house whereas in North it is done before marriage ….. We too celebrate mehandi functions not only haldi….. I’m from Hyderabad…😪😒 please give correct information
South Indian Weddings usually begins at 2-3 PM on day 1 and end at 2-3 PM on day 2. Day 1 : Welcome, Sangeet, Varapooja, Reception (basically Fun stuff except Varapooja and people dress up as their wish) Day 2 : Naandi, Kashiyatra (Groom), Gowri Pooja (bride), Muhurtham, Talamvaralu, Sapthapadi and Arundati Nakshatra (Just full on Religious Stuff and people wear ethnic dress) Food is not humble just because it’s served on Banana leaf and non veg not allowed at all. Food for 1 person go from 150 per plate to 2000 per plate. It depends on varieties.
North indian wedding doesn’t mean punjabi and delhi weddings North indian hindu weddings are as traditional and auspicious as south weddings are.. But the thing is, their movies represents the true culture and tradition but bollywood doesn’t.. So north indian culture and traditions are misunderstood by many….. Though admiring others part of indian culture is good .. here many north indians are getting impressed by the Southern Culture, . But I hv just small msg to all my north indian frnds. Plz learn from South and preserve your own tradition and culture rather than just appreciating that of our south Indian brothers.. Untill u respect your own traditions, the concept of diversified indian tradition will not live on in glory..
Alcohol is also not allowed in North Indian weeding…. Were r u come From???? And muhurat also there in North Indian South and North both followed Hindu Coustmes first u should know that…. alcohol is taken a only in some weeding party which held after weeding the real weeding on that no one take alcohol in North even nonveg also not allowed in North weeding because how ppl will attended Sri satyaNarayan puja or so called saath phera by eating nonveg or alcohol…….
I am from North (UP) and i was married in South(AP) it was a love marriage. I was shocked with the difference in culture and styles.. But most terrifying thing was, in South they ask for dowry, then al least 50grams of golf for groom and like 3lakhs for clothes and about 7lakhs for furniture and good amount of cash In up from boy side, clothes and jewelry comes for girl. But they didn’t gave any jewelry apart from mangalsutra. My family was ashamed and i was too. This was my biggest mistake that i got married in South india. They got rich life style and great culture, but they treat north indians with a cheap stereotype. In marriages groom side ask alot but don’t give anything. Overall south is good for travelling and visiting but not for permanent settlement for North people.
ring finding game is also there in andhra along with tharamralu …..Also there r more activities depending on the region …..”Edurkola” is a kind of ritual where both boys and girls side sing songs as a reply to the other side song …..they also dance in between as in barat…..bride is considered as sita and boy as ram and they argue (in a funny way)both side that sita/ram should come forward and put varamala…..Also there is a ritual called “engili” arathi where the bride during lunch will sing songs for the relatives of boys side who too while having lunch would listen to song and give gifts to the bride for the song
Though i like the subtlety and tradition of Southern rituals but would like to highlight some misrepresented facts in the article: 1.North Indians do use nakshatra muhurat timings for wedding 2.Only party area has alcohol, no mandaps even in north allows alcohol 3.Only punjabis do bhangra, no other states actually know bhangra 4.Majority of Vegetarians in the country are in North, only non vegetarians include nonveg cuisine and alcohol in their wedding.
In southern part of India rituals vary according to their family practice. So there are lot of different you can see in the south indian wedding. So before posting any message please do your homework properly and post your message. In tamil nadu white saree in wedding is considered as bad omen. But in Kerala ther are wearing sandal colour white shaded saree during their wedding. In Southern part of tamilnadu wedding food without non veg is not allowed. Only particular community people will not eat non veg during marriage. But it is not applicable for all the marriage of south india
I think you are mistaken bcz south indians, especially men spend more money to buy western clothes than traditional. For them traditional means dothi & shirt, who said that shirt indian culture even dothi also they won’t wear it perfectly. And they prefer non veg mostly & in some areas even on festivals & weddings also they will go with non veg.
I think the notion of “North India” is quite loosely held. What is north according to you? It doesn’t include north-east Indian tradition nor the eastern Indian tradition which is very different from “North” India(physical geography of India). And for a fact, Kashmir being in north has entirely different traditional marriage ceremony. And regarding alchohol, I believe people from north(physical geography) are much more open about it. However, everyone knows the maximum revenue generated from liquor is Kerala followed by Tamil Nadu. The “loud” marriage tradition of North is limited to few regions and doesn’t justify and fit into your definition of North otherwise specify what is North for you?
Rituals are same. Haldi, mehendi, mangalsutra, garlands, ring game, kanyadaan, Havan. Non veg, alcohol are not served usually. Only few families have that. South Indian Wedding happens in day time in Wedding halls. North Indian Weddings wherever space available halls or big open grounds usually at night muhurt with horse riding entry of groom. In South India horse ride rituals were stopped one century ago!😂
Wait wait wait alcohol is not allowed in north indian weddings and non veg too it is there after the marrige in reception party what are u saying no wonder south india has a way more better culture and lifestyle than north indian but actually if u talk about wedding north indians wedding is my choice singing dancing playing games enjoying wearing a beautiful indian lehenga is beautiful and i love it
If i tell You We are Indians First And Northern part are Forgetting basics Root Culture..in South Which we Call Mahurta is written in Indian Shastra.. but we North Indian following Western culture more. White is symbol of Purity. Marriage is symbol of Purity. I am North Indian but i feel south indian are far better than us.
Without even dowry gold chicken alcohol many of the South Indian marriages are not complete I’m not saying that only South Indians are taking dowry but in top 10 dowry taking state 4 state from there so pls don’t misguide all Indian marriages are good after all we all are Indians who lives diffrent part of India plus nort Indian do very pure wedding madam pls don’t misguide by just perusal some Internet vedios.
I wish you made this article without judgment. Instead of simply stating the major differences (which I came here for) you were sounding a lot judgmental by using words like subtle and calmer louder etc. Should have left that and food habits aside. As if you were giving out one a certificate of being purer, subtler, calmer, vegetarian etc, and the other louder, meat 🍖 🥩 eater, alcohol drinker..not so pure. I am also a north Indian but haven’t heard of alcohol being served during wedding 🤯🤯😱 That’s a first. Wearing low-cut blouse is a latest thing and did not happen 50-100 years back. And in recent size of neckline was same in south and north Indian wedding. I hope your North India was not restricted to exclusive Punjabi wedding.!
Earlier their was no difference between north & south Indian weddings except the sequence of some rituals. But now north Indians are rapidly forgetting their roots due to ignorance and lack of knowledge about the oaths and rituals performed during the ceremony. Still I am proud to say that in my locality marriages are like occasion for which all relatives & neighbors dedicate atleast a month performing uncountable rituals in grand way. Actually the major reason behind it is that we are brahmin, who are a bit more conservative for the rituals! In short, we should not forget our roots & should influence others.
I am from UP but most of the things you told are wrong about North Indian in North Indian wedding there are many sub types if you see there will be difference in Punjabi, Haryanvi / Rajasthan Gujarat/ Up Bihar/ Delhi an dother wedding. In South India I had seen people eating non veg too so we can say that generalization of wedding is wrong here in this article.
