What Do You Say At A Greek Wedding?

Greek weddings are festive events with many customs and traditions. Greeks often express love, joy, and sympathy through various words and phrases. The traditional wedding service in the Greek Orthodox faith is an ancient and beautiful ceremony that has remained unchanged for centuries. The bride and groom hold a lit candle throughout the service, symbolizing the light of Christ. The Koumbaros, or best man, is an important role in Greek weddings, and couples may choose to pick one “friend” each for this important role.

The best man or koubaro is a woman, and some couples may choose to pick one “friend” each for this important role. I ora i kali is a greeting used to wish a happy marriage to the couple and translates to “The time is good.”

The first ouzo distillery opened in Greece in 1856, but its place in Greek history goes back to the 14th century when its predecessor, tsipouro, was first made by Greek Orthodox monks on Mount Athos in Macedonia. A standard Greek Orthodox wedding consists of the Betrothal Service and Crowning Service.

In Greek culture, weddings should not be held 40 days before Easter, in the first two weeks of August, on August 29, the death anniversary of Saint John the Baptist, on September 14, or 40 days before Christmas.

Lambathes (taper candles) are lit during the wedding ceremony to represent the couple’s willingness to welcome Christ. The couple is greeted with various greetings, such as “kales yiortes” (happy feasts) and “kala hreestouyenna” (merry Christmas). The “making the bed” tradition involves family and friends gathering at the couple’s new home to help with bed preparation. In Greek weddings, the best months to marry are January and July, which are dedicated to Hera, the wife of Zeus in Greek mythology. The main phrase to congratulate the married couple is “na zisete” (may you live), which translates to “may you live long” or “may they live long for you.” The couple is also asked to live together, respect, and love their groom as God intends. The couple does not speak during the ceremony, as it is the equivalent of saying “I do.” Greek wedding receptions do not have speeches, but instead focus on eating and dancing. The couple promises unconditional love to God, a practice that is unique to Greek weddings.

  • I am Italian, my family is like this family in many ways.. The older generation passing down traditions and recipes. Also, having the innocence when trying to learn new technology. My grandparents called me for everthing. This answering machine, cordless phone, cable, a word proscessor a remote that had more then power and website/volume up and down. I miss them

  • LOL this SO reminds me of everytime I’m offered something with wheat, barley, or rye in it. I have Celiac disease and was diagnosed when I was 17, so I can’t have gluten, which is in ALL wheat, barley, and rye products. I basically become a teacher each time. Most common example being like if people are having sandwiches. I explain I can’t have anything with bread/breading, because I can’t have gluten, then explaining that means anything with wheat, barely, or rye, and usually then explaining just how bad it gets if I do have gluten. The person looks surprised but sad and concerned, then lights up like they just solved the answer to life…”OH, YOU DON’T HAVE TO WORRY!!! We also have white bread!!” And THEN I have to begin EXPLAINING that “whole wheat is the same as whole grain, and literally means the grain (wheat IS a grain) has not been altered or processed, and white bread is STILL made WITH wheat that’s literally been bleached and/or otherwise processed.” And then they usually start looking at EVERY SINGLE FOOD ITEM in their pantry with newfound novelty, asking me if it has gluten and each “education session” usually ends with “Wow….I don’t think I could even survive if I was you!! I love (random food) too much!” And when I can tell they still think I’m just being too serious and “deserve” cheat days, I just respond with “Yeah I thought that when I was first diagnosed. Till I tried FULLY eliminating gluten and stopped waking up in the middle of each night running to the bathroom with so much pain I was screaming, crying, even uncontrollably SHAKING in pain.

  • Eating meat is an instinct. Being vegetarian is a choice. Okay, so it’s a legitimate choice, but…the whole “humans were designed to be vegetarian is specious. We were “hunter/gatherers” way before we were “agrarians”. True enough, some primates were and are vegetable eaters. Some are not. “Balance” means just what it says. BALANCE. If you can “balance” your diet, good for you. (no fair if you “take supplements”…On what Mother provides alone, please). If you can’t balance it WITHOUT “supplements”, either you’re doing it wrong or…go get a burger.
