What Does A Verger Do At A Wedding?

A verger is a layperson within the church who assists the clergy in the conduct of public worship, especially in the marshaling of processions. They may be full-time or part-time and can be involved in special groups like pre-baptismal training, weddings, or ordination rehearsals. Vergers work under the direction of their rector, vicar, or priest-in-charge and are essential for the preparation of the church in the week leading up to the wedding rehearsal and wedding day.

A wedding usher is an individual who guides and escorts wedding guests around the venue and to their seats before the ceremony. They also serve as counselors and confidants during planning a wedding, helping to balance guests on either side of the aisle. Additional extras at added costs include the support of a verger, which ensures the church is warm, clean, and tidy, help with reserving seats, handing out Order of Service and hymn books, additional heating may apply, having an organist, choir, or bell ringers, and church flowers.

Vergers offer particular support for weddings and funerals, helping to make large groups of people feel comfortable and at ease. They usually get the church ready before the wedding, put the heating on in good time, make sure everything is tidy, open the church for flower arrangers if necessary, and then welcome guests as they arrive. The verger not only leads processions at large services, weddings, and funerals but also acts as sacristans, extraordinary minister of communion, liturgical minister, and a vital part of the church’s pre-wedding logistics.

In conclusion, a verger plays a crucial role in the organization, service, and welcome of religious services in churches. Their duties include welcoming the congregation, assisting in the ordering of religious services, and ensuring that parish and Episcopal traditions are articulated.

  • This is hilarious! It’s hard to imagine the kind of stress this wedding has been putting on people who lead otherwise very normal and non-public lives. These church workers and such have never had to deal with anything like this before I expect. I would do a cartwheel too if I had finally gotten through all the madness. God bless him!

  • Kate Middleton will one day become Queen Consort of England. She becomes Queen Consort because she isn’t inheriting the throne – William is. That is why Phillip is simply known as Prince Phillip. He is not the monach of the country, but the Consort. But because the male takes the lead – regardless of whether or not they are the one inheriting the throne – the Queen (and Parliment) didn’t allow him to be King Phillip – because if they’d had – we’d all be singing ‘God save the King.’

  • @b2spirita I disagree that the royal family should not be considered significant. They are useful only to bring in tourists. They do great work for the people including that fact that nearly all of them are in high Military (or have been) positions and not just because of who they are, but what they have done, they work hard and deserve recognition for it, also they do a lot of Charity work and help people have some sort of life, so they don’t just bring tourists in, they do bloody good Jobs!

  • @b2spirita For anybody in the UK it SHOULD be a big deal, besides the Royals do a heck of alot for UK foreign relations and also strengthens the bonds between anglo and commonwealth nations. Many british citizens say we should abolish them, but they dont know how lucky we are as the royals are the envy of the entire world

  • @Unimatrix0ne Then yes – Kate Middleton will one day become Queen Consort of England. • @ionlychoplog . Theres no point in comparing us with France since that country has its own “brand” while the UK has its brand / culture which the royals are a major part of. \r \r FYI the royals cost us last year 62p per individual person (or roughly between 30-40 million per year) thats not a vast amount of money for what we get out of them. Infact ild say its a bargin

  • @MhmmmWaffles thats because queen elizabeth is on the thone, In the British monarchy, the husband of a female monarch does not have any recognized special status, rank, or privileges. hence Prince Phillip doesnt become a king by marring queen elizabeth, however when Prince William becomes king .Miss Catherine Middleton will become queen.

  • the royals raise and donate millions of pounds every year to charity’s that would other wise be under funded and without needed publicity. Beside this point perhaps something can be justified on its beauty . Royal tradition is a beautiful thing. As well as this British tourism has just had a global advert that would be priceless, also the jobs created in the UK both directly and indirectly . So you cant say they do nothing for the people

  • @b2spirita the crown estates make £200million a year profits which goes directly into the treasury THE PUBLIC PURSE. THE MONARCHY IS EXTREMELY PROFITABLE, GET IT INTO YOUR HEAD.\r the royal family mainly does charity work with people like the queen attending some 400 events a year, pretty good for an 85 year old woman, why should the government do this and when would they have the time? please explain.

  • @rotwart not only are your insults stupid but they are incredibly pathetic, and you seem to be a sophisicated intelligent person given by your responses but its a shame its degraded by the foul words you’re replying back with. I never swore at you or insulted you, YOU were the one was started to verbally attack me at an innocent joke and “fuck off idiot”, is that all you can say? This article is just about a happy occasion so there’s bound to be ‘happy’ comments, so dont be such a miserable twat.

  • @rotwart have you heard yourself! it was A JOKE!! and since when did i mention bin laden?! you really need to lighten up, becuase if the world was full of people like you, it would be full of massive egos and be really boring and dull! and how dare you judge me on a single comment that i wrote, if you were so smart, you’d know not to judge people by looking at a few words they’ve written. Its not a crime to laugh and have a sense of humour & did i ever insult you directly with insulting words?

  • @bugalooshrimp92 Its simply not a funny thing to say. Its like saying Osama Bin Laden should be knighted for doing a cartwheel or whatever. It really is just an idiotic comment bereft of wit and the only conclusion I can draw is that you are an immature moron who would serve the world better by dying. Now fuck off, idiot.
