What Does Engaged Listening Mean?

Active listening is a crucial skill that connects people in conversation, changing the dynamics from speaker to listener. It involves being fully present and focusing on the speaker’s message. Active listening involves five steps: paying attention, reading body language and tone of voice, maintaining attention, and being aware of and listening for total meaning.

In the age of distractions, active listening is both an art form and a vital skill to learn. By focusing fully on the speaker, one can deepen existing relationships and navigate moments of conflict or tension. Active listening requires mastering many skills, including reading body language and tone of voice, maintaining attention, and being aware of and listening for total meaning.

Engaged listening is not just about hearing what the other party has to say; it involves taking a vigorous, human approach to understanding and grasping the meaning of what the other person is saying. It is about creating a connection between speakers and listeners, ensuring that conversations are inspiring, creative, nourishing, and productive.

Active listening includes listening to the words being said, being aware of body language, tone of voice, and other non-verbal cues. It is like meditation with eyes open and completely focusing on what the client has to say. Active listening helps others feel comfortable sharing information with you, making it a valuable skill to develop.

When we listen, we try to understand what someone is saying. It means being fully engaged in the interaction. Like any other skill, it requires patience and practice. Active listening helps us avoid frustration and confusion in our relationships. It also has other benefits.

What is listening engagement?

We define engagement as using resources when listening. A person will only listen if they are motivated and have enough resources.

Social connectedness and communication are key for healthy aging (WHO, 2002). Many people over 45 have some hearing problems (Cruickshanks et al., 1998; Feder et al., 2015; Helfer et al., 2017). People often don’t realize they have hearing loss until decades later. These issues with hearing make communication more difficult, increasing the risk of social isolation, which contributes to other poor health outcomes, including an increased risk of cognitive decline. People with hearing impairment cope with it in different ways. Some people with hearing loss use hearing aids or other devices to help them hear better. Others avoid listening in challenging situations. This person is most at risk of social isolation. To help people with hearing loss, we need to understand how they listen to communicate. We propose a model of listening engagement that integrates different lines of research to provide a conceptual foundation. Hearing impairment is caused by damage to the ear, such as hair cell damage, changes to the stria vascularis, degeneration of spiral ganglion cells, and degradation of synaptic connections between inner hair cells and auditory nerve fibers. Changes to the auditory circuits, such as a loss of inhibition and increased hyperresponsiveness to sound, are also evident. Hearing loss makes it harder to hear. Acoustically similar sounds are harder to tell apart. This means that hearing loss makes it harder to understand what you hear. Applied researchers now know that cognitive factors are important in understanding the impact of hearing impairment (Davis and Johnsrude, 2007; Johnsrude and Rodd, 2016; Pichora-Fuller et al., 2016; Peelle, 2018).
