What Does The Bible Say About Arranged Marriages?

The Bible does not support or condone arranged marriages, but rather offers guidance and direction about marriage. It emphasizes the importance of taking the covenant of marriage seriously and provides advice when choosing a spouse or having them chosen for you. Arranged marriages are not necessarily wrong from the standpoint of the Bible, as they are customary in some cultures and peoples, such as those living in India.

The Bible does not directly support or reject arranged marriages, but it does provide guidance on the human need for companionship. In Genesis 1 & 2, God designed marriage to meet the human need for companionship, and in 1 Corinthians 7:10-11, Paul cites a commandment of Jesus that if you’re not compatible, you may have married the wrong person.

Marriage is considered sacred and appointed by God, as He weaves people’s lives together to facilitate the meeting, courtship, and ultimate wedding between a man and woman. It is not something to be thrown away when feelings have subsided, but to be fought for daily and mature one another as both grow in love.

Islam does not support arranged marriages, but there are a few exceptions. An unmarried woman is under the authority of her father, while a married woman is under the authority of her husband. A wife is bound to her husband as long as she lives, but if her husband dies, she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord.

Godly qualities are crucial in a Godly marriage, as true love between a husband and a wife is not forced or arranged but rather through mutual love. The Bible does not advocate arranged marriages, but it provides an example of a marriage that God ordained.

Should a man put his wife or mother first?

Men should show affection and care for their mothers, but their wives should come first. Many mother-in-law/daughter-in-law relationships are difficult.

Sadly, in most Kenyan households, when a man’s wife and mother argue, the man sides with his mother. I see it all the time. Don’t side with your mother over your wife. To have a happy marriage, put your spouse first.

It’s not just in arguments. Sometimes men need advice from women in their lives. He often listens to his mother more than his wife. When will men learn to put their wives first? Your wife is number one. First. Your wife should come first. Before you get married, it’s okay to take your mother’s side. Once you get married, your wife is your top priority. Your wife’s opinions should matter more. A man should not ask his mother for advice about his life or household when he has a wife. Once you’re married, you can’t keep acting like you’re still close to your mom.

Is it wrong to force someone to marry you?

The UN says forced marriage is a human rights abuse because it violates people’s freedom. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights says that a person’s right to choose a spouse and enter into marriage is important for their life and dignity. The Roman Catholic Church says that forced marriage is grounds for an annulment. For a marriage to be valid, both parties must consent freely. The Supplementary Convention on the Abolition of Slavery also says that both people must agree to get married. It also says that people must be at least a certain age to get married. The International Labour Organization also says that forced marriage is a form of modern slavery. In 2009, the Special Court for Sierra Leone (SCSL) Appeals Chamber found that abducting and confining women for forced marriage in war is a crime against humanity. The SCSL Trial Chamber in the Charles Taylor decision found that the term “forced marriage” should be avoided and described the practice in war as “conjugal slavery.”In 2013, the UN Human Rights Council passed a resolution against child, early, and forced marriages. The resolution says that child, early, and forced marriage violates human rights and prevents people from living free from violence. It also says that child, early, and forced marriage affects the right to education and the right to the highest attainable standard of health, including sexual and reproductive health. The resolution also says that eliminating child, early, and forced marriage should be considered in the discussion of the post-2015 development agenda. The UN wants to end this bad practice.

How does Jesus define marriage?

God made marriage for us. As described in Genesis and later by Jesus, marriage is a covenant between a man and a woman. This lifelong, sexually exclusive relationship brings children into the world and helps to take care of the earth. Biblical marriage is about faithfulness, sacrificial love, and joy. It shows the relationship between God and his people. While people may change their ideas about marriage, followers of Jesus should follow what Jesus said in Matthew 19:4-6. Jesus replied, “Have you not read that at the beginning, God made them male and female? A man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” They are now one flesh. God joins together what God joins together.

  • So true about all this! I used to be against arranged marriages, and in some ways I’m still not 100% for it, nor am I against it. But you see the implications, such as in India, when arranged marriages decrease. This is all by design-this is being done to curtail the population of that country. Recently, I’ve noticed how western values such as feminism has been increasing in India, and as such, arranged marriages have been declining. When a country throws away traditional values, religion, & God and introduces non-traditional, liberal, western values, then relationships and marriages don’t last. I have never been married but my mother, who was Turkish, wanted to arrange a marriage to her friend’s daughter many years ago. It didn’t happen because she decided to run away from that. I now live in Turkey, and I have seen divorces increasing over the years here. A generation ago, when my mother was a girl growing up here, divorces were almost unheard of. Sorry ladies for saying this because I know this will ruffle some feathers, but I blame women anywhere in the world for rising divorce rates. Most divorces in all the countries I’ve been to are initiated by women. Women never know what they want-they are fickle and ambivalent, and also have higher cases of self-esteem and insecurity disorder as well as other mental disorders. That’s why in Turkey, even in this day and age, most families here who have a young daughter pressure her to get married as soon as she turns 18, and parents don’t give her any say-so or decision making power.

  • I’ve seen plenty of arranged marriages where the bride and groom did not find each other attractive, leading to countless fights and arguments, and their children grow up with mental scars. They did not grow to love each other, it actually got worse, and in some cases, even led to cheating in the marriage. Compared to couples that sought the wisdom of the Lord, got to know their spouse through courtship, staying pure, and married someone they found both physically and spiritually attractive. Arranged marriages can work, but they are by no means the end all be all.

  • Arranged marriages are good for bringing about a stable society. Its good for families to facilitate the process. However the man and the woman should also agree. Its in a man’s nature to have free will and not to be forced to be with a partner they don’t want. In the Bible Jacob loved Rachel and worked for 7 years and another 7 years in order to afford her dowry . Leah Rachel’s sister was In an arranged marriage to Jacob and she bore him many children but it was Rachel not Leah who was loved. When Rachel after many years of being barren gave birth to Joseph this child became the favorite and the anointed by Jacob because of who his mother was. The ways man feels about a woman affects the way he treats her and their children . In Africa there are many instances where a man who was in an arranged marriage abandoned his wife and kids in the village to marry a beauty city girl . A man values what he has worked hard for because MEN ARE HUNTERS !

  • Unless the Holy Spirit instructs you to post a article like this, don’t do it! Your intentions may be great, but this could lead many astray. Unless God arranges the marriage, there ought to be NO SUCH THING. Listen to the Holy Spirit and let Him guide you. No man has the capacity to pair you with someone who is equally yoked to you in God’s Eyes. Such wisdom lies with God, not man!

  • If this is what it’s coming to no thank you I believe in self choice you know what the best for your self not some one (self worth is important)and being in an arranged marriage doesn’t mean your treated better or you won’t be disrespected life is all about self choices u wouldn’t put your life in soMEONE ELSE hands to To control
